I liked the 'spy ring' episode too icelolly and how relevant it is even for today! I liked Thursday taking pity on the woman who had been battered, then her turning into a blinkered leader of the spy ring with Endeavour knowing but not telling Thursday.

Cleverly written.

ppeatfruit · 08/03/2018 14:47

Ooops I hope that hasn't 'spoilt' it for anyone Blush.

Is it it me or does Shaun look even more of a dream with longer hair?!!

flapjackfairy · 08/03/2018 15:04

My dh and i were giggling at the names in the soldier episode. On the soldier side we had Colonel Champion and Captain Coward i think it was.
And on the police side we had Truelove, Thursday, Strange and Fancy !
My husband said they are really taking the mick tonight !

ppeatfruit · 08/03/2018 15:10

Yes they definitely like taking the pee! In the spy one the 'special branch' with all the secrecy, posh accents, and dressing up in their bow ties were a scream.

Littlewhistle · 08/03/2018 20:56

The 2 posh men just reminded me of those 2 silly airmen who used to pop up in 'Allo allo. I'm enjoying this series more but can't get to like the actual Endeavour character. All this bed-hopping doesn't seem to fit with the morose old fart that Morse was in that series.

ppeatfruit · 09/03/2018 08:22

Oh IIRC The character of Morse would take a bit of the other if it was offered! Even though old and a bit morose!

I'm glad that End. is coming out of his shyness\growing up and getting bedded!! Remember also that it's the 60s and sex began then!!

GnotherGnu · 09/03/2018 20:33

Surely this episode was pastiche George Smiley rather than James Bond? With a bit of Till Death Do Us Part thrown in - ref. the use of "Silly Moo" and the fact that the wife was called Else.

GnotherGnu · 09/03/2018 20:37

Older Morse was always and very clearly susceptible to women, so the bed-hopping is definitely in character. Didn't they let him have a semi-happy ending, in that he was in a moderately settled relationship at the time of his death?

ppeatfruit · 10/03/2018 09:02

Yes exactly GnotherGnu I like your user name btw! That ages you and me!

I reckon that Morse as a character was probably too eccentric to actually marry or settle down with anyone but as you say he liked women. Sometimes to the detriment of his police work!

blackbunny · 10/03/2018 14:12

I remember an episode of Morse where Lewis remarked he was fairer to women than men, and Morse replied "they're the fairer sex"
Think women were his weakness, but his mum died when he was very young didn't she- possibly he avoided commitment to avoid a woman abandoning him?

Ruffian · 11/03/2018 20:15

Unman, Wittering and Zigo!

CoolCarrie · 11/03/2018 20:29

I have a sinking feeling about Thursday, but hope to be wrong.

Terpsichore · 11/03/2018 20:33

Haha, Ruffian, I just said exactly that to Dh! Grin

WipsGlitter · 11/03/2018 20:42

Is there a thing about them having funny surnames? Thursday - Fancy etc?

Ruffian · 11/03/2018 21:12

Terpsichore Grin I used to love that play!

Yorkshirebetty · 11/03/2018 21:23

Coolcarrie - I was thinking the same. Just as he's about to retire, Thursday will be killed /die of a heart attack /be murdered by that gangster.

Terpsichore · 11/03/2018 21:39

This is turning into something a bit like that Lindsay Anderson film 'If....' (great film btw)

Cherrypi · 11/03/2018 22:18

Loved that episode. Didn’t spot Colin Dexter.

CoolCarrie · 11/03/2018 22:19

Shame poor Fancy but glad it wasn’t Thursday.

CoolCarrie · 11/03/2018 22:21

I wonder who they will cast as McNutt the new boss? It needs to someone tall, with presence. Iain Cuthbertson played the character in one episode of Morse.

CoolCarrie · 11/03/2018 22:23

It made me think of The History Boys by Alan Bennett.

flapjackfairy · 11/03/2018 22:46

Shaun has said he would not continue without Roger so not easy to kill Thurs off
I guessed Fancy would cop it which was a shame as i was just warming to him !

DamsonGin · 11/03/2018 23:20

Cherry pie, I didn't know Colin Dexter made appearances but just looked it up and he might have been there as a portrait as he passed away last year.

icelolly99 · 11/03/2018 23:30

No more til next year! Sad Will Win come home? will Morse and Joan ever have 'coffee'? will Thursday ever retire AND who shot George?!

There was a reference to Dakers when Morse was taking the register, which I thought was a cross-reference to The History Boys. Also the references to Bamfylde School relate to To Serve Them All My Days.

I thought there was some absolutely superb acting in this episode where Morse, Bright and Thursday were reacting to Fancy's death, conveying a wealth of feeling all without saying a word.

The fact that Thursday didn't know where he was going right at the end seemed to be leaving the door open to him reappearing. It's a shame we seem to be losing Bright.
