Who watched first episode of new series; i love watching Shaun Evans as young Morse.

I assumed Charity Mudford was meant to be based on Deborah Mitford rather than Unity, given that her husband seems to have been based on Mosley.

I watched an old episode last night, the one relating to the children's home. At the beginning there was a scene in prison: the prisoner's name was Barker - after Ronnie Barker, I suspect - and the nasty warder was Wainwright, after the one who came into one or two episodes of Porridge.

YvonneGoolagongsDugongDoug · 01/03/2018 08:44

I would like them to do a series with Truelove as the main character.

Terpsichore · 01/03/2018 09:37

Dh and I hooted at 'Charity Mudford' and the use of 'non-U', but if you look at photos of Diana Mitford in later life, the Charity Mudford character was a dead ringer for her, rather than Unity or Deborah. Same hairstyle, same style of clothes, necklace, same queenly, straight-backed posture, etc, etc. Not to mention the, er, Hitler thing.....

eddiemairswife · 01/03/2018 11:33

Certainly not Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire. I thought definitely Diana.

GnotherGnu · 01/03/2018 11:45

Agh, yes, I meant Diana.

KurriKurri · 01/03/2018 15:26

I love this programme pefect sunday night viewing. Love Shaun Evans, and all the in jokes.
I'm glad someone else spotted the crossover actor from Collateral - I thought it was but am hopeless at faces so usually get it wrong !

I missed a bit on Sunday though as the phone rang - what happened to Fancy in the minefield - did they show him getting out?

I really like Joan, she's one of my favourite characters - if this wasn't a prequel she'd be allowed to get together with Morse as she should Grin

GnotherGnu · 01/03/2018 18:33

That's the problem with this, they can't work up any real love interest because we know Morse doesn't get married or settle down with anyone. Likewise, there can't be any jeopardy; we know he can't get killed, leave the police force, get seriously injured etc because he has to turn into John Thaw.

ImListening · 02/03/2018 14:26

And that Gnu is the crux for me. Unlike other programs I feel I can’t engage with this as much or root for the characters. I like Bright & Thursday but as characters they can’t really go anywhere. We know that Strange rises ranks also. I just have to enjoy it for the individual stories & acting.

Cherrypi · 04/03/2018 21:57

Ooh why didn’t he go in for coffee?

ludothedog · 04/03/2018 22:03

I dont know cherry. What's holding him back? I thought initially it was because she was the bosses daughter and then because she had been through a trauma. Maybe he's just scared because he knows that if he starts something it will be serious?

blueskypink · 04/03/2018 22:38

I love the concept of Endeavour. I think the characters and actors are excellent. But I find some of he plots so turgid. Have just given up on tonight's Jeux sans frontier meets the Iron Curtain. Really I couldn't care less who the murderer is. I think I only struggle on for Thursday.

cloudyweewee · 05/03/2018 06:30

I found last night's episode very unengaging and went to bed before the end.

TaurielTest · 05/03/2018 08:41

Last night's was all-out Bond pastiche wasn't it?
I hope they're just toying with us, but I fear for Fred. Contemplating retirement, promising to buy another round 'next time', and the ominous slo-mo as he pressed Morse's shoulder in farewell...

TaurielTest · 05/03/2018 08:44

I agree with PPs about the clunky dialogue and plots, and the obvious 'prequel problem' that you know where the characters end up, but I still really enjoy this show for the characters and the acting. I have a special fondness for young Max.

TaurielTest · 05/03/2018 08:48

I also liked the cheeky "it's Chinatown/Summertown" reference in yesterday's. Second only to the "no-one died" The Day Today reference in the one set in the swimming baths:

icelolly99 · 05/03/2018 10:12

I really enjoyed last nights episode; loved the twist at the end with the shop owners! Shock

I can't get over how Gordon Grinley has grown up to be a pathologist 😁

sluj · 05/03/2018 19:45

Gordon Grimley

liquidrevolution · 06/03/2018 14:38

Anyone else notice the secret service lady was also the same actress as in Foyles war?

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 06/03/2018 21:49

I think Fred's brother is going to fail to repay all that money and so Fred won't be able to afford to retire.

liquidrevolution · 07/03/2018 10:18

That's what I am hoping!

Agree, Thursday needs to stay! His misfortune might be our gain.

CoolCarrie · 07/03/2018 22:37

Roger Allam was the original Jervert on stage in Les Mis, he has a great voice, you can find him on YouTube. We often listen to Cabin Pressure in the car on long journeys as it is so funny, with Stephanie Cole as his boss. High,y recommend it.

blueskypink · 08/03/2018 06:10

I think they could have been a bit more subtle with the brother. It's so glaringly obvious that he's feckless and won't be able to repay. I know Thursday has his 'family' code but it's a bit much for a seasoned old cynic like him to be foolish enough to lend his spiv of a brother all that money Confused
