I love this series too. LW the Superintendent was brilliant when he dealt with shouty man from robbery (who called DC Strange Tubby!). I love all the characters but the Super is my favourite closely followed by Thursday. I can never decide which I prefer Foyles War or Endeavour.

Dustysparrow · 23/02/2018 20:26

Love this series! All the actors are so good! Yes, agree about the superintendent (Anton Lesser) - he is also excellent. I've seen him in sooo many things, he is always really good. I think he is one of those quality actors who ought to be more well known than he is.

icelolly99 · 24/02/2018 12:20

I watched Shaun Evans but on LW last night. Never watched LW before; my goodness what a car crash of TV that is - awful! Why oh why did Shaun choose to go on that show?! He hardly ever pops up in TV as himself and then he ends up on LW. Shaun deserves better! Confused

I enjoy watching it but I just can't find Shaun Evans believable as young Morse. He doesn't seem like he'll turn into him in later years.

Cherrypi · 25/02/2018 17:23

I think the ratings for Endeavour are a bit lower this series so they may have made him.

LIZS · 25/02/2018 20:27

Was that a Thunderbirds reference - Creighton-ward?

84CharingCrossRoad · 25/02/2018 20:37

This might make you think again about Shaun Evans.....
Did anyone else see the Hi de Hi reference at the beginning. The Stuart Hargreaves School of Dance...... Grin

Any Endeavour fans?
CoolCarrie · 25/02/2018 20:41

Yes I noticed that, Barry and Yvonne from Hi De Hi !

Terpsichore · 25/02/2018 21:03

Also just noticed that one of the portraits in the officers' room is of Colin Dexter as an army type.....they do like their little in-jokes Grin

LIZS · 25/02/2018 21:29

Parker the valet/chauffeur!

Mrsmadevans · 25/02/2018 22:01

I didn't like tonights episode as much, unusual for me am an avid fan .

CoolCarrie · 25/02/2018 22:05

The scriptwriters do like in jokes, “ It’s in the trees, it’s coming” from The Night Of Demon film and The Hounds Of Love by Kate Bush was mentioned in the episode with the tiger, and the hog head incident in the episode about the men’s club.

CoolCarrie · 25/02/2018 22:08

Anton Lesser is one of those actors who is always working, like Mark Rylance, and Roger Allum, bloody good actors not on ego trips.

blueskypink · 25/02/2018 22:58

I thought tonight's episode was particularly good. But I'd forgotten Thursday even had a son!

Ruffian · 25/02/2018 23:23

I really like Endeavour even tho the reveals are often not that great but the acting and the attention to detail, the lifelike feel of the period, the quality of production is excellent. Sean Evans is perfect - just the right amount of tetchy and touching.

The only thing bugging me this series is the new young officer - seems he's been brought in to emphasise that Morse is getting older but I find his character really shallow compared to the others

Samcro · 25/02/2018 23:32

i liked tonights, but where were the military police

GnotherGnu · 26/02/2018 00:04

Wasn't it a tradition for Colin Dexter to turn up at some point in every episode of Morse and Lewis? Sadly they have to make do with his picture now.

Talking of in-jokes, did we clock the reference to Mboto Gorge? Famous as being the place where Blackadder faced "ten thousand Watutsi warriors armed to the teeth with kiwi fruit and dry guava halves".

Also, when Thursday was talking about prominent fascists being arrested, he mentioned Spode. Which has to be a reference to P G Wodehouse's Roderick Spode, leader of the Black Shorts.

GnotherGnu · 26/02/2018 00:05

Oh, and for once I recognised the location of the military headquarters. Kneller Hall in Twickenham.

eddiemairswife · 26/02/2018 10:29

One of the army officers was the same actor as the army officer who raped Sandrine in Collateral.

corythatwas · 26/02/2018 10:59

Like this series better than the last; it's back to traditional detective narrative now; last year's Great Gatsby pastiche just annoyed me.

Miss Jakes though. And really hope the new puppy-like constable is going to get the better of Morse soon. The one thing I can't stand about the series, how Morse is always feeling sorry for himself, and the script writer is feeling sorry for him, and we are expected to feel sorry for him. There is so much early 20th century "misunderstood young man" about him that it just sets my teeth on edge. Good on Thursday for reminding him that he is not the first person to have had to make allowances for a young constable...

I watch for Roger Hallam and Anton Lesser. Great actors both of them.

topcat2014 · 26/02/2018 20:01

I saw thee hi de hi ref too, and was coming on here to post. Also liked the crossroads one last week

noitsnotteatimeyet · 26/02/2018 22:48

Useless bit of trivia - the actor playing the racist hairdresser is married to Thursday IRL

MaunderHunt · 27/02/2018 15:00

Spent too much time spotting the references! So I had:

Stuart-Hargreaves/dancers
Pte Oswald (ref to Mosley)
Marcus X (ref/homage???)
Charity Mudford - Unity Mitford whose sister Diana was married to Oswald Mosley. Diana was in Holloway during WWII. Butler wasn’t at their wedding but I think Goerbels was.
CM character said non-U term invented by Unity and Diana’s sister Nancy Mitford
Spode - from Jeeves and Wooster

But my favourite was Farridge the photographer, presumably spelt Farage!!

MaunderHunt · 27/02/2018 15:00

*Hitler not Butler!!!

SleeptightDaisy · 28/02/2018 22:41

Love this programme and love Shaun Evans and Roger Allam. The series seems to be a more in depth view of the main actors feelings than others Thursday's obviously impending resignation and the impact on him and then how endeavour is coping with the realisation of losing Joan.
