Who watched first episode of new series; i love watching Shaun Evans as young Morse.

We were watching and much to our amusement the so-called Holywell Lane which featured fairly heavily wasn't in Oxford. It was in our local small town, as was the chemists' shop they went into a couple of times. Now looking forward to the rest of the series to play spot the location.

I'm a huge fan, I love Shaun and the relationship between his and Roger's character. I've watched all the series, and I'm recording this one so I can binge watch which will be a treat.

PickleFish · 11/02/2018 09:03

I've watched it, but ages ago, and don't remember all of it. MIght need a refresh! I have trouble telling people apart at the best of times (I'm fine with all the police/regular characters, but it's the criminals, suspects, shady ones etc that confuse me, and especially when the scenes cut from one thing to another, often dark and shadowy).
Was there more about the dining club and similar in the earlier ones? They're the comments that set me wondering, especially with some of the stuff revealed tonight. Of course it could be that it was all very common at Oxford in the 60s/70s, and I shouldn't be making any further associations with any particular club/people.

CoolCarrie · 11/02/2018 12:52

Yes the references were quite interesting, I bet the actors had a laugh about that!

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 11/02/2018 13:31

I really like Endeavour. I prefer it to Morse as the young Morse is a lot less grumpy, though as someone else has said, he is becoming more like older Morse now. I think Shaun Evans is an excellent actor.
(and Roger Allam, which goes without saying)

specialsubject · 11/02/2018 13:38

The most glorious period piece and all the actors are so good. Great Monday night viewing ( record then skip ads).

icelolly99 · 11/02/2018 14:13

PickleFish I'm don't understand what you mean about the dining club comments.....maybe i dozed off for a minute?! Confused

I really like it! Although I binge watched all the first 5 series and all of grantchester whilst in a sleep deprived state on mat leave and seem to have got some of the supporting police characters mixed up in my head so I kept wondering where people were, then realising I had the wrong series! Grin

GinIsIn · 11/02/2018 14:18

Also the main plot device from last week’s was a total rip off of Laura Wade’s play and subsequent film ‘The Riot Club’.

PickleFish · 11/02/2018 14:53

Oh if it's a rip off of something else, then maybe it's a more general theme than I realised.
It was more the comments about the dining club, the riotous behaviour and chucking money at the hotel to cover up for all the damage, the comment about the 'you should have seen what they did with a pig's head' and so on, which all just sounded exactly like referring to various politicians. And then when you saw exactly what other appalling things the club also got up to, it's hard not to make other associations and wonder if they are insinuating that that kind of thing went on all the time at similar clubs. Sorry, didn't want to go into too much detail in case people hadn't watched it yet.

impostersyndrome · 11/02/2018 16:49

I loved the acting and the period setting. The interactions between Endeavour and his colleagues as well as the women, are brilliant. But I also found the sound quality poor and as for the gruesome scenes... My word! Is it really necessary to be so graphic?

GinIsIn · 11/02/2018 20:09

DappledThings · 11/02/2018 20:27

I used to live near Shaun Evans. I was just telling my mum this evening about the time we reached for the same banana in Sainsbury's and how he always used to smile so nicely at my toddler DS!

CoolCarrie · 11/02/2018 22:35

He looks lovely and he is a brilliant actor and he is from Liverpool!

ginghamstarfish · 11/02/2018 23:25

Yes, it was good, prefer this to the John Thaw ones. Shaun Evans I think was in 'Teachers' on C4 some years back.

MontalbanoFan · 12/02/2018 08:51

And he was in a couple of episodes of Ashes To Ashes. Along with Roger Allam playing a bent cop!

icelolly99 · 12/02/2018 09:43

Does anyone know where that lovely cinema in last nights episode actually is please?

OP posts:
BasiliskStare · 12/02/2018 11:29

I don't know where the cinema is , but the street , where Thursday bumps into Joan , with the red doors ( if I'm think of the right scene is Museum Rd )

BasiliskStare · 12/02/2018 11:30

( That was to ice lolly - not just random blurting Grin )

Cherrypi · 12/02/2018 21:48

I was wondering about the cinema too. Another political undertone this week.

icelolly99 · 12/02/2018 23:35

BasiliskStare thank you; yes that's the place. I walked along there a couple of weeks ago, that's why it looked so familiar.

OP posts:
Terpsichore · 12/02/2018 23:38

Someone on Twitter spotted the cinema. It’s on the Essex Road in Islington - latterly a Mecca bingo hall!

BasiliskStare · 13/02/2018 02:02

I think I remember reading that Morse's flat ( i.e. in Morse - not Endeavour) is actually in Acton.

Ice lolly - my son is living for this year in Museum road and saw them filming that scene with Roger Allam . He ( my son , not Roger Allam ) was rather excited. Smile In a previous year he ( in other accommodation ) , saw them go past his room with the Russian cars ( the episode with the chess match. )

blueskypink · 13/02/2018 07:49

I normally enjoy Endeavour, but I thought the cinema episode was absolutely dire. Not even any gems from Thursday!

MontalbanoFan · 13/02/2018 08:04

I missed some episodes from the last series so am a bit confused re the coldness between Thursday and his daughter, Joan. Is it just because she’s a modern woman who wants to live independently? Or is it something more serious - e.g. a hidden pregnancy that was hushed up?

I’ve looked at Wikipedia for info but there’s no mention of the awkwardness between them.
