I loved the first season, so really looking forward to this, especially seeing Uhtred again -v swashbuckling. I never watched GoT so I have nothing to compare it to. (GoT fans seem not to like this so much.) I do like it's historical basis.

Sakura I was thinking Uhtred and Ragnar Grin I mean, they'll need to rest at some point, won't they...

Uhtred is perhaps close to being too pretty, but as long as he's a bit grimy, his hair knotted and he's leaping into battle, I'm quite happy to keep quietly drooling. Come on, did you see him washing in the last episode?!

The Guardian blogs are great, loved all the comments too.

Had a discussion with friends online who seem to prefer Vikings but, looking at some pics, the men don't seem quite as hot!

BagelGoesWalking · 20/04/2017 01:12

Fiderer it's not the kind of thing I thought I would like either! Don't even really know why I decided to watch it on Netflix.

Might even be because I'd heard talk about Vikings but hadn't been able to watch as I don't have Prime.

So glad I did though. Just think of what I might have missed Wink

sleepyowl12 · 20/04/2017 01:23

I'm Uthred all the way, I think he's gorgeous!! Love this series

Fiderer · 20/04/2017 09:30

I don't mind that he's the prettiest Dane in the kingdom. I love his voice & the way he says "Lord" to Alfred & you can tell there's a fraction of resentful hesitation.

I also think he should wash more often Wink

Can't imagine how repressive living as a Christian was in that era. Not being able to say "lucky charm" without a reprimand that it's ungodly. Liked how Uhtred said, after Beocca spoke to him about Thyra, "Praise him!" Grin

BagelGoesWalking · 20/04/2017 12:16

The abbots and priests certainly come out looking far more scheming and devious than the Danes or the "English" soldiers. I liked Finan's comment that Arthur "must have a priest for every day of the year" Still harbouring some resentment that Beocca didn't tell Uhtred about Mildrith's debt before they were married.

I love Uhtred's voice as well, it's lovely. I think he's a very good actor and he has beautiful eyes! (Well, beautiful everything really)

NoLotteryWinYet · 20/04/2017 12:21

i'm not partial to the matty hair on Uhtred but he must spend ages working out at the gym! Which in real life would make him a total bore, but as a Viking...

BagelGoesWalking · 20/04/2017 12:30

A nice reminder of Leofric

cadnowyllt · 20/04/2017 13:39

Bagel It's not Arthur but Alfred. I thought it a typo first time you posted it - but maybe not

If Arthur had truly existed, he would have been a Celt. Alfred was a saxon/english. Arthur's enemies were the english.

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/04/2017 14:18

Bagel Grin

and

NoLotteryWinYet · 20/04/2017 14:32

don't feel too bad - i'm not sure how much history i'm taking in, too distracted by all the vikings :)

BagelGoesWalking · 20/04/2017 15:33

Yes, typo, sorry 😩

cadnowyllt · 20/04/2017 17:21

Oops - kinda feel a bit like a chief sneak for mentioning it now. Alfred and Arthur ? - different colour team jerseys but what the hell.

NoLotteryWinYet · 20/04/2017 18:49

I confused tim farron with a character from harlots on a political thread yesterday - I wish mumsnet had edit!

BagelGoesWalking · 20/04/2017 19:02

Correction doesn't bother me Cadnow Grin** You were right!

It's bad enough trying to get all the Aethelreds, Aethelstans and Aethelflaeds correct, without mixing up Arthur and Alfred

Spudlet · 20/04/2017 19:07

Does anyone else like Sihtric? I like Sihtric. I'd like to mother him.

Uhtred, I would not mother. But I could find a use for him Grin

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/04/2017 19:23

Sihtric is also v v nice, although not chunky enough for me. But v v nice indeed.

Fiderer · 20/04/2017 21:22

I understand the mothering thing about Sihtric too. Which is a bit odd considering he's a murdering Dane. "Have you sharpened your axe today? How many times must I tell you? Yes I'm sure your gf loves you, but maybe wait a little bit before marrying her."

Another series I've been watching which has dirty filthy sword wielding men is Black Sails. Pirates in Nassau in 1700-something. Interesting re colonialism, the slave trade, the pirates vs England, independence. Goes a bit in circles over the series but still great characters & dialogue.

Also a mix of historical & fictional pirates. More swashbuckly than axey beheadingly.

And Rupert Penry-Jones and the wonderful Toby Stephens.

NoLotteryWinYet · 20/04/2017 22:01

tonight's episode was terrifying - can't believe I've got to wait another week to watch the next one!

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 20/04/2017 23:41

Great episode. Poor Athelflaed. This series is just as just as the first was.

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/04/2017 00:38

Oh, edge of seat stuff!

And what if the Danes get Thyra? Poor, poor Father Beocca.

Also, Steapa. Forgot him. V v nice. And chunky Grin

BagelGoesWalking · 21/04/2017 00:41

Oh hell! No more episodes for binge watch, 😒

I find myself increasingly angry at Alfred's bloody religious piety and his wife's nastiness. He's intelligent, strategic - why, oh why, can't he be more tolerant towards darling UIhtred? He knows Uhtred is the one to command, why is he being so blinkered, aaargh, so frustrating.

The man's been serving him faithfully for years. It was nice to see Odda try to stand up for Uhtred I half thought Odda was going to name Uhtred as his heir!

Aethelred is a nasty piece of work, did any of you think there was a hint that he and his "man" (can't remember his name) were rather close and perhaps he would have preferred to be gay? Or is he just nasty and cruel?

BagelGoesWalking · 21/04/2017 00:59

Giardian blog - some of the comments are really funny (although a couple of know-it-alls try to impress with historical spoilers).

Loved the Finan banter today.

I feel a strong urge to write to the BBC and berate them for not publicising this enough! Just want huge audiences so that they keep making more

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/04/2017 01:06

Link to Guardian blog

Yes, I hooted at the comment describing Erik and Siegfried as "A madder and more dangerous version of Jedwar" Grin

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/04/2017 01:07

Jedward

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 21/04/2017 06:55

I am two episodes behind now! Shock

The holidays proper interfere with my telly watching...
