I loved the first season, so really looking forward to this, especially seeing Uhtred again -v swashbuckling. I never watched GoT so I have nothing to compare it to. (GoT fans seem not to like this so much.) I do like it's historical basis.

Beautiful scene between Hild and Uthred when she handed him his sword. Such lovely relationship interplay. And Ragnar asking if he thought he had been abandoned.

Alfred truly used Uthreds passion against him to get him to be subservient again. Alfred is masterful like that.

Uthred with his cut hair, all cleaned up after being a galley slave, rescuing his lady. Like the slightly goth boyfriend I wished in my head at 16. So lovely.

Dillite2 · 31/03/2017 21:19

That boat scene where Uhtred's friend was being murdered was brutal. That wasn't easy to watch.

I am so glad that that bishop was finally killed. Man of God my fat arse. More like man of scheming arseholes.

IsabelleSE19 · 01/04/2017 22:56

I know - I was surprised Hild was so upset about that - surely she could see that he was a total arsehole, 'man of God' or not?

Gran22 · 01/04/2017 23:01

I'm so glad it's back! I can recommend the books, read the lot after the first series was on TV.

Fiderer · 02/04/2017 08:05

I fast forwarded a lot of the slave ship scenes.

Would have liked the bishop to have suffered more before dying, evil bastard. The power the church had, frightening. And marriage by proxy, wtf?

The casting is v good. I couldn't stand near Alfred's wife without taking a pair of scissors to her stupid plaits.

I love Uhtred's accent He & Ragnar could rescue me any day.

Fiderer · 02/04/2017 10:01

Recap from the Guardian Here

I don't get all the names though. "It was nice to see more of Aelswith and Aethelflaed." Who & who?

NoLotteryWinYet · 02/04/2017 14:17

Are those Alfred's daughter and the man she's betrothed to?

zukiecat · 02/04/2017 19:21

Absolutely love this show and the books

I like Uhtred with his hair as long as possible, I nearly cried when Ragnar rescued him and Uhtred said "Ragnar" with a very hoarse tearful voice

Missing Skorpa though, I had a bit of a thing for him too even if he was a real wrong 'un

He deserved to die though for what he did to Iseult

Badders123 · 02/04/2017 20:14

I'm not loving uthreds new graduated bob haircut 🤔

zukiecat · 02/04/2017 21:31

Me neither Badders

Love his longer hair, hope it's back to normal next week

Same with Rollo in Vikings

Dillite2 · 02/04/2017 22:55

Oh gosh, Uhtreds hair. You would think that their budget would have stretched to a decent wig instead of being forced to steal some scarecrow's hair.

kuiakaituhi · 03/04/2017 01:24

Has begun here in NZ! We have had 3 episodes on Netflix so far, anew one each Saturday. Uhtred is lovely in his leathers. The storyline is fascinating. I am reading the Bernard Cornwell books alongside the programme and that is helping me understand the intricacies.

If you have watched "Vikings" the stories dovetail in some parts. This is set sometime slightly after "Vikings. There is mention made of a battle with the Lothbrok brothers which I think is yet to come on Vikings, during Series 5.

Badders123 · 03/04/2017 07:28

Ah...rollo
Just not the same with his pomaded hair and posh clothes 😞
likes em dirty and sweaty

NoLotteryWinYet · 03/04/2017 08:28

i'm impressed you're all concentrating on the man's hair! Seriously though, not much to drool over in that episode.

TeaAddict235 · 03/04/2017 15:31

Uhtred is as fit as!

Some of the Danes are too in fact Blush

Alfred would have gone without any sprogs from me! I'd never have passed by his room to wish him a 'goodnight'.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 03/04/2017 19:35

I love this programme although still haven't got over the death of Leofric at the end of the last series.

Paffle · 03/04/2017 19:42

That episode was both brutal and brilliant. To understand the reaction to the mad bishop's death, you have to really put yourself in the shoes of early Christians: absolute faith in God; all knowledge of religion is what priests tell them so absolute authority of the Church; fear of what omnipotent God will do to those who offend him. I think very hard to really understand what that must have felt like.

Really looking forward to more of this (absent slow and sadistic deaths).

zukiecat · 04/04/2017 14:55

Seeing Hallig being tortured and murdered was hard to watch and the scene where Uhtred cried and held onto Ragnar finished me off Sad

Moanranger · 06/04/2017 00:15

So glad this is back & watched two episodes tonight on I player to get my swashbuckling fix. Alexander Dreymon is sort of like Errol Flynn in his heyday. I think his slightly strange accent comes from his actually being German or raised there. New male hairdos this season -those strange French braid topknots on the Danes? I also like how hardly anyone looks clean ever - probably authentic, but surely they must have occasionally wandered down to a stream & scrubbed up a bit, even in the Dark Ages?

Badders

Me too, Rollo is far more attractive as a Viking!

While we're talking about hair, Gisela in Vikings has rather short hair for a woman of the period too

sakura06 · 07/04/2017 20:46

I love it too. Episodes 3 and 4 have been phenomenal: full of drama, action and emotion. I like the moments of levity too. Aetholwold has been very funny and I liked Ragnar's 'Make him a widow!' line last week. I hope they make Series 3!

NoLotteryWinYet · 07/04/2017 20:59

this one was suitably nail-biting! The scene where the gate finally came down was particularly good.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 08/04/2017 07:50

I think Uthred's accent comes from the fact that Alexander Dreymon was born in Germany, raised in France, Switzerland and the US, studied in Paris and trained in London!

I am loving the second series much more than the first, I have to say. I thought the slave ship episode was heartbreaking, and I loved the moment between him and Hild where she gave him back his self-respect (ie his sword!) The battle scene in the last episode was brilliantly done too.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 08/04/2017 07:52

Although DH and I are impressed with this series's use of guyliner!

uthredswife · 08/04/2017 08:04

I am a huge fan of the books but haven't watched the shows. I am going to though. Buy why has bo one on this thread mentioned Finan? Please tell me he's in it....
