Is anyone watching this? I think im going to end up hooked!

Well congrats to those who more or less worked it out! I enjoyed it but there were a lot of intriguing 'mini' occurrences that didn't really get followed up or make sense even at the end! 'Lonely' Moira has a lot to answer for - and Ade's (Peter) part seemed almost a waste of time.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 14/09/2016 08:09

Only just found this thread...well done to those who guessed that it was about Adam or Grace's parentage. I thought the fact that the Juliet Stevenson family all had English accents made me assume that they hadn't always lived in Scotland.

I love these threads, the way we all refer to characters as Billy Elliotts day, and Eric Cantona and still know who we mean!

Yoksha · 14/09/2016 10:27

Did the Detective carry out her threat to download the paedophilia material onto the dealer's laptop? Wouldn't the download date be obvious? I stayed with the whole 4 episodes, but it's 4 hrs of my life I'll never get back.

Also, I've never seen a long tunnel like that in Edinburgh! If it exists, where?

Janus · 14/09/2016 11:22

I've been thinking about this again!!
The father had Parkinson's so he had his children tested, Grace and the boy. He would not have had Adam's dna tested though, so how did he find out Adam was related to his daughter? Am I being thick??!!

ParanoidGynodroid · 14/09/2016 11:26

No, she didn't put the stuff onto the computer, that's why she ran instead so her daughter could get treated before she was caught/charged.
Yes, find it unbelievable that Moira wouldn't even consider for a moment that her child was her lover's and not her husband's.
Children born and raised in Scotland, even by English parents, would not have English accents!
Also, what was the earlier trouble with the younger brother that they kept mentioning?

plimsolls · 14/09/2016 11:32

janus he said in the episode he had stolen some of Adan's hair and sent it for testing.

Janus · 14/09/2016 11:40

I remember that now!! I think k switched off for the last 20 minutes as it was ridiculous. I didn't like/care about many of the characters so lost interest I think! How the hell Moira never thought they could be related is just stupid.

Merrylegs · 14/09/2016 11:47

I think that was the problem. If the characters had any redeeming features/been interesting/likeable then I think the whole 'emotional aftermath of a murder' scenario could have been interesting. But they were all just unpleasant and ridiculous, and there was no substance to the motive anyway- blame it on some spurious religious stuff. Even drug dealer detective had lost interest in the end and buggered off to her 3 swimming pool resort (with the ill-gotten gains and blood on her hands...)

Janus · 14/09/2016 11:48

And what drug addict would diligently go and do the job he was given £1,500 for rather than just take it and go straight away and find nearest dealer and get high?

Merrylegs · 14/09/2016 11:57

Ha, I know. Tbf he wasn't very bright - he'd done the hard work - robbing at knife point. For a moment there it looked like the tables were turned and then blow me if the 'mugee' didn't end up giving him £1500 anyway. That scene should have ended with drugee skipping off waving the cash 'and Cantona slapping forehead 'doh!' Simpson style...

plimsolls · 14/09/2016 12:02

It all got quite far fetched, didn't it? And why did he believe murdering two people was definitely less sinful than incest? Is there a hierarchy?

And why wait til just after the wedding to tell Adam to break it off?!

And yes....Moira was a bit unbelievable.

LemonBreeland · 14/09/2016 12:14

I haven't watched the final episode yet. DS1 was out last night and he wanted to watch it with me. It was filmed in the Scottish Borders and the farmhouse and barn belonged to friends of his.

dollylucy · 14/09/2016 12:35

2 questions

How did Moira not know who her daughters father was?

And how/why did Cantona have the knife?

eddiemairswife · 14/09/2016 12:40

Surely if the English family had lived in Scotland since before Grace's birth all their children would have gone to Scottish schools and acquired Scottish accents, unless they had been sent to English boarding schools. Come to think of it though, a certain Mr. T. Blair was born and educated in Scotland.

bumpetybumpbumpbump · 14/09/2016 13:33

I think when the thug went to attack him under the bridge cantona took the knife off him and put it in his pocket and left it there

bumpetybumpbumpbump · 14/09/2016 13:33

Also he never meant for Gracie to be killed, he just wanted Adam murdered but she came home earlier than planned

plimsolls · 14/09/2016 13:34

The two murders I referred to: Adam and then also the guy he paid to murder Adam.

hollyisalovelyname · 14/09/2016 15:36

Don't posh people in Scotland speak with English accents ?

LemonBreeland · 14/09/2016 15:48

I know plenty of children who have been born and raised in Scotland who speak with the accents of their English parents. Also it is true that some of well to people in Scotland do not have Scottish accents at all.

PaddingtonLoverOfMarmalade · 14/09/2016 15:56

Thoroughly enjoyed this and glad that the bits that confused me confused other people too.

The only bit I still need help with is who actually killed druggie Lee? If it was Cantona then he was deliberately setting up son-in- law to take the blame by putting the knife in the fireplace. How does that fit in with his strong religious beliefs? Or had he accepted that he was going to hell and was being selfish?

Janus · 14/09/2016 16:42

Yes Cantona, he explained that when they were burying the car he forgot to put in the knife so he came in and panicked and more or less put it anywhere he could think of at short notice, don't think he was trying to implicate Adam's brother.

chunkymum1 · 14/09/2016 18:09

As Janus mentioned, it was pretty central to the plot that when the father found out he had Parkinsons he had his children tested. As someone with a large number of relatives with Parkinsons I'd love to know what this test is that can determine whether relatively young people will get it without them showing any symptoms. I suspect this is bad plotline but would actually quite like to be proved wrong.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/09/2016 20:34

So Gracie's dad had ADAM killed as found out he was graces half brother

Why didn't the mum stop the romance years ago. She must have worked out there was a chance the baby was his?

AnnieNoMouse · 14/09/2016 22:13

I think it would have worked better if Cantona had leapt to the conclusion, when he found out that Grace wasn't his, that her dad must be Ade Edmonson because he thought he remembered him and Moira having a thing years before. However, it would turn out in the denouement that Mr Elliott was actually the dad and had been having an affair with Moira for years.
That would help explain why Moira wasn't bothered about Gracie and Adam getting together - because for her there was never any question that they were not brother and sister. It would also add to Cantona's guilt and sense of tragedy.
To improve the series I think it could have been cut down to 3 episodes; got rid of Claire's dying patient; the dying daughter and drug-dealing detective; and the rape story.
Claire could be going to prison for concealing the body, the car, and the knife.

eddiemairswife · 14/09/2016 22:17

Yes. What was the point of the dying patient?
