Love Shardlake, also love the Bruno books by S.J. Parris. Janet Paisley writes really good historical, Scottish bodice ripping stuff.

gamerwidow · 20/09/2016 18:49

Yes Michael and Jean make a lovely couple. Not sure I like what she did with the Comte though.

TheHiphopopotamus · 20/09/2016 19:06

Hello everyone.

I've been lurking on and off over the summer but if I'm honest, I've kind of lost interest in Outlander a bit (thanks to series 2) Blush Casting a more critical eye over it, I think overall it was bit disappointing. Hoping that it will recover its form for S3.

Anyway, apparently they've cast Young Ian. An actor called John Bell who I've never heard of but this is he.

TheHiphopopotamus · 20/09/2016 19:08

Oh and they've also cast Joe Abernathy but who really cares about that? I was hoping they weren't going to bother with any of Claire in Boston but it seems they are.

gamerwidow · 20/09/2016 19:09

I think he is too pretty for Ian but it will be good to see what he makes of the role. If I'm being honest I thought the first half of S2 was weak but I do think that it got back on track when the action returned to Scotland. I am a big worried that Scotland may be the magic factor for the show and there's not much left of the books that is set there.

TheHiphopopotamus · 20/09/2016 19:15

I feel the same gamer When I read the books, I was actually gutted when they left Scotland for America. They also spent far too much of S2 in France.

Back Young Ian, he is quite pretty, and totally not how I imagined him, but I think he has a bit of a look of Sam Heughan so maybe that's why they cast him? I dunno, I'm probably imagining it Grin

JacquettaWoodville · 20/09/2016 19:43

Agree re Comte. Wonder what will happen with the Raymond mystery...

AKAmyself · 20/09/2016 20:15

Oh no that's not how I imagined young Ian at all!!!! . Young Ian in my head was always

TheHiphopopotamus · 20/09/2016 20:28

Did Ian have dark hair in the books or am I mixing him up with Roger? I can't remember, not that that's important. Don't know how I imagined him, but this isn't it. I thought it might have been William they'd cast at first.

JacquettaWoodville · 20/09/2016 20:53

Brown but not black, I think - Roger has black hair.

Young Ian is a bit of a bounce about "wee loon" - it's the kidnapping then the mohawking that make him more serious and lanky Scot.

Drywhitethanks · 20/09/2016 21:06

I'll wait and see. It's a acting pic after all. Young Ian is dark in the book, doesn't look like J but has his mannerisms. Needs to look 15 in the beginning.
Definitely agree that J and C better in Scotland but oak so like them in N Carolina which resembles Scotland a lot in the book. Just think they are better in the wilderness and not refined Paris.

Drywhitethanks · 20/09/2016 21:06

A 'casting pic' not 'acting pic'

Drywhitethanks · 20/09/2016 21:09

Just googled John Bell....reckon he'll be good

gamerwidow · 21/09/2016 08:51

Jacquetta I'd quite like to see a Raymond spin off ...

gamerwidow · 21/09/2016 09:00

If you look at this link on Twitter John Bell is actually a perfect blend of the actors who play Jenny and Ian Snr which I hadn't noticed. So I guess it's a casting win again (although I too envisioned had Andy Murray Grin)

Lessstressedhemum · 21/09/2016 10:04

He has good strong Scottish bones, way too short, though. He's supposed to be as gall as Jamie, John Bell is only a wee lad.

I read something the other day about a lot of series 3 being in boston. They are using Glasgow as that setting. The cat were being fitted for 50s/60s clothing etc. I was so gutted, I had hoped that they would just skip over that bit, who really cares about it. I hope they give enough weight to Jamie's life after Culloden, his is by far the more traumatic journey and he is very much changed by it. Claire, on the other hand, is still a pain the neck.

snozzlemaid · 21/09/2016 18:29

I think we're going to get a lot of both Jamie and Claire's lives before the reunion I'm afraid. So we're going to have a lot of Claire and Brianna in Boston as well as Jamie in the cave.
We're going to need a new thread soon, by the way. Nearly reached 1000 posts.

gamerwidow · 21/09/2016 18:40

I'm really interested in seeing Jamie in the cave and at Ardsmuir and Helwater.
I have zero interest in what Claire was up to though. As far as I am concerned she can just pop up in Edinburgh going I'm a doctor now and Franks dead btw. Back story done Smile

JacquettaWoodville · 21/09/2016 18:41

I don't get the hate for Claire's back story?

gamerwidow · 21/09/2016 18:49

Oh I don't hate it I think she's been strong and brave carving out a career few women had at that time while living as half a person and raising a child. It's just not as interesting as Jamie's journey.

JacquettaWoodville · 21/09/2016 18:53

Can we have both and cut the ridiculous double floating in the sea for days...?

gamerwidow · 21/09/2016 19:06

It's a deal Grin

TheHiphopopotamus · 21/09/2016 19:12

As someone who is not a fan of the books, and got into Outlander through the first series, I couldn't give a toss what Claire got up to in the wilderness years.

Series 2 didn't have enough of Jamie and Claire's personal relationship in. Nowhere near enough. Instead they took the focus off them and filled it with all that bollocks about trying change the future etc. We had far too much of Claire doing her thing on her own and not enough Jamie. It's almost like they forgot why people had started watching it in the first place, a mistake that is currently being made with S2 of Poldark.

As far as I am concerned she can just pop up in Edinburgh going I'm a doctor now and Franks dead

This would be perfect ^^ That's only my opinion though, and considering they only have a limited amount of time to tell the story, cutting all Claire's backstory would be the perfect choice.

JacquettaWoodville · 21/09/2016 19:26

I would like a "bulge" story about frank, Brianna and Claire though!
