Just finished reading book 6. I loved this one and, damn it, DG made me cry at the end yet again!
Straight on to book 7 then...

Drywhitethanks · 13/09/2016 07:42

Game you have a good point
AKA welcome back
Less my teens say the same every time I mention Scotland
Snozzle loved book 6 too. Liking book 7 (AnEcho in the Bone) some different perspectives, but finding it a bit slow so far.......sure it will get better.

Poldark is disappointing damn it....the court case was rubbish and he's brooding a bit too much Sad

snozzlemaid · 13/09/2016 18:37

It's not hitting the spot is it Dry?

Drywhitethanks · 13/09/2016 21:22

I feel bad admitting it Snozzle, I adored Poldark the first time --but I was about 10!!!) and loved the books. I love AT and Damelza actress, she's breathtaking. But I think the writing is poor which is so disappointing. Will still watch it, but just feel it lacks subtlety. It's a bit pantomime in a way.

IdStillRatherBeKnitting · 15/09/2016 11:14

I know this thread has gone quiet! But I am very late to the party. I only found Outlander on prime two weeks ago... How could I have missed it!!! I work from home at night (sounds shady - just painting!) and watch drivel on prime to keep me awake. Found Vikings too dark (all filmed at night??) and Outlander came up as a 'because you watched...'
Wow. Well I'm totally hooked.

No, I came on the thread to say thanks! I've been watching it, reading the books, and reading the thread all at the same time, and have been having a real laugh at you critiquing DG's work! How on earth she got away with publishing a book on how she writes sex scenes... they mostly seem to go 'some time later...'

Finished Voyager last night, how far fetched was that! But I loved it. Now I'm going back to finish DIA which I skipped as you were all chatting about Voyager at the time.

Hopefully when season 3 is on I shall be here to have a giggle too.

Yes, Poldark is now a crap, why isn't it Outlander? type show, I loved series 1. Very disappointed.

gingerboy1912 · 15/09/2016 12:45

Oh still you've got two fab series to watch, although personally series one is my favourite apart from the last episode welcome to the thread.

AKAmyself · 15/09/2016 20:09

Welcome still, and I'm so bloody jealous! I want to be at the beginning of my Outlander journey, not at the end :( I've watched season one approx 3 times, season two once, read all the books + the Scottish Prisoner. And my life is empty without Jamie.

If you think I'm exaggerating... think again! Really, really miss him.

Is there any other book/series/movie I can fall into?

snozzlemaid · 15/09/2016 21:06

Hello Idstill
I'd love to be able to go back and watch it all for the first time again.
I don't think I'll ever find anything that compares to this story.
I feel the same AKA. I either rewatch bits of episodes or youtube clips almost every day as I miss Jamie too. And I'm reading book 7.
This year for me has been all about Outlander.

Drywhitethanks · 15/09/2016 23:07

Hi there Still, it's addictive isn't it? We must keep going until S3 next year. I loved Vikings....Rollo is almost as sexy as Jamie. Viking, not dogGrin
Snozzle how are you getting on with AEofTB? (Book7)? Found it slow at first, but 50%through, and it's brilliant. DG is clever with her plots for all the waffle which I secretly love think what she's done with R and B I'd lovely.
Have a long train journey tomorrow, can't wait!!!

gamerwidow · 16/09/2016 09:49

I've just finished the space between I am now officially out of Outlander novels, novellas and short stories Sad I've downloaded DGs book on how she writes sex scenes in desperation but I'm not expecting that will fill the void.
Watching fan videos and following SH, CB and DG on Twitter to keep me tided over until the next book/ series.
I haven't been this obsessed with a show since Buffy Grin

IdStillRatherBeKnitting · 16/09/2016 13:20

I accidentally bought a fire stick, and so watched episodes 1-7 of series 1 last night !!! I had only watched it on my 7" tablet, so this was a real treat. I didn't get any work done though (but did lots of knitting instead - I am trying to decide if I could get away with a boar's hunt caplet, think I'll just identify myself as crazed fan though!).

Will start again with episode 7 tonight (can't think why), and see how many more I can through!

Really want to start book 4 as you've all said it's one of the better ones, might feed the kids before I download it tonight (so they actually get fed).

snozzlemaid · 16/09/2016 16:50

Absolutely no idea why on earth you would want to watch episode 7 again Grin
Do you know that you can get Outlander knitting pattern books?

Dry I've barely started reading book 7, so can't really comment yet. Good to hear that you're enjoying it though.

Lessstressedhemum · 17/09/2016 18:02

My tablet has broken Sad I have borrowed dd's chromebook to catch up with the thread. How pathetic am I. I have been reading the latest Giordano Bruno book, but its just not the same!

slalomsuki · 18/09/2016 11:19

Having read all the Outlander books and watched the series I have been looking around for something else on American civil war history.

I have found a series on Amazon Prime called Turn staring Jamie Bell of Billy Elliot fame. While it has no Outlander Jamie character it dies have some of the same US historical figures is Washington and Arnold and shows the war of independence fairly realistically and the rise of a spy ring. Took a while to get in to it though as is filmed in the dark shadows and I could remember for a couple of episodes who the characters were. There are 3 series of it to watch.

Drywhitethanks · 18/09/2016 20:10

Am being pathetic but am finding the letters to B and R and the connection with her parents in the past and the whole Lallybroch link really moving. I miss C and J almost aszmuch as her! I actually miss R and B in 18c a lot

AKAmyself · 18/09/2016 22:02

Has anyone read any of these? outlanderaddiction.com/2013/08/what-to-read-after-outlander/

In other news, I'm finding myself warming to POldark again. TOnight's episode was much better, less pantomime and quite satisfying. And AT is objectively glorious

Drywhitethanks · 18/09/2016 22:08

Agree but his hair is still bad. Prefer happy Francis

gamerwidow · 19/09/2016 06:17

Dry I loved the letter from J to B at Halloween asking her to pray for him. Brought a lump to my throat.

gamerwidow · 19/09/2016 06:20

I've read the Farseer series they are very good, 6 books in total 3 series 1 and 3 series 2 set a few years after series 1. My second favourite books after Outlander.

gamerwidow · 19/09/2016 07:17

Also read the wheel of time and sword of truth series both of which start very strongly but get a bit rubbish half way through. I never got to the end of the WOT because it became so unreadable. The female characters are quite poorly written definitely a male version of what a strong woman is. SOT I finished but the last book was a slog and the lead character was a bit of a moralising lecturing bore by the end of the book.
Also remembered that I read 'the other Boleyn girl' which is part of Philippa Gregory's Tudor series. Really enjoyable book, well written with strong interesting female characters.

Lessstressedhemum · 19/09/2016 18:15

I love wheel of time, Lan is my other fictional love! Had a hard time adjusting to Brandyn Sanderson writing them after RJ passed. Loe Brandyn Sanderson books, too. Sword of Truth was so brilliant, Richard Cipher was one of the best fantasy heroes ever, until he became a pompous prat who was just a mouthpiece for Terry Goodkind's moralising. I still got to the end, though. Loved Farseer as well, I like all Robin Hobb except the Live Ships. Have always had a bit of a thing for Fitz, tortured, misunderstood and undervalued, andhe has an awesome wolf companion.

Pillars of the Earth is brilliant, Clan of thr Cave bear good, Love Song of Ice and Fire (GoT). Boudicca Trilogy is absolutely brilliant, I really like Manda Scott. Rebus books are good but totally different from any of the above.

Drywhitethanks · 19/09/2016 19:01

Making list of books to read after Outlander:
Lord John books ?
Farseer series
Wheel of time

I love Philippa G books!
Have you read CJ Sansom Shardlake books? Kind of crime in Tudor England. Love them.

AKAmyself · 19/09/2016 19:33

I read the Pillars of the Earth ages ago and remember a long train trip that I wish had been even longer!

Of the Lord John series, I have read the Scottish Prisoner because it has Jamie in it, but wasn't blown away. Wont bother with the rest I don't think.

Will check out Farseer and Wheel of Time. I'm intrigued by the Children of the Earth series but scared that I'm going to end up fancying a fictional Neanderthal!!!

gamerwidow · 20/09/2016 06:36

I haven't read the CJ Sansom Shardlake books but I'll put them on my list Smile I really liked the Lord John books and the other short stories especially the later ones. DG has really developed as a writer as time has gone by.

JacquettaWoodville · 20/09/2016 13:36

I started with the Scottish Prisoner but then went back and read the first two and the short stories in order. I think that worked better. Plus there are lots of references in Echo in the Bone.

I really liked The Space Between. I'd be happy with a Michael and Jean series!
