I have just watched ep5 and a bit of ep6, but have called it a night as I kept nodding off. A fee thoughts:

  • i'm amazed all of them survived the immediate avalanche. I've read the snow sets like concrete around you and lots of people die because of lack of oxygen whilst they are waiting to be dug out/rescued - those avalanche backpack things inflate to give you an air pocket;
  • Andri is a fabulous shambolic bear of a man. When they were digging the old guy out of the snow and he was dimly lit from below by the son's mobile phone he looked just how i'd imagine a Viking warrior to look in battle;
  • the orange loo in the mayor's house was properly old skool Shock ;
  • what is the abyss? What a great line - a really annoying half clue;
  • Theis' Santa beergut in profile Shock
  • Henrika and the wheelchair guy - what a touching parting. She's fab & makes a great team with Andri;
  • I'm starting to wonder about Asgeir too.
officerhinrika · 28/02/2016 00:33

The scene with the little girl being terrified by spotting the Captain was scary. I'm not clear who the other man on the ferry is who is ordering the Captain around?
I wish Andri would do his coat up - everyone else has hats with ear flaps, scarves, gloves, while he just wears his jacket like a cloak!

ProfYaffle · 28/02/2016 08:05

Me too! I spend most of my time bellowing "zip your coat up!" and "put some gloves on!" at the screen.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 28/02/2016 08:28

Binged watched last weekend to catch up and watched last night.

Peretti I sarted thinking that last night about the other policeman

diddl · 28/02/2016 08:51

So the ferry captain knows where the girls are?

But him not telling the other guy doesn't mean that they are safe, does it?

So the son of the guy who set off the explosives did he steal the torso or was he just disposing of it for someone else?

Also, who was he watching having sex?

MissWimpyDimple · 28/02/2016 09:22

I think it was his wife and the younger bloke at the school hall that he saw having sex. Not quite sure though.

I'm not sure that Asgeir is actually crocked, but I reckon he knows a lot more that he isn't saying - he was there when dead-mayor was police chief and I suspect there was some sort of cover up at that point.

I love Andri. It's nice to have a crush on someone who doesn't quite fit the convention "gorgeous bloke" criteria

diddl · 28/02/2016 09:44

I wasn't sure if it was his wife or his sisterBlushGrin

It just made me wonder if he'd been spying on the couple 7yrs previously & accidentally started the fire.

Yes, some cover up, be it about the fire or something else.

RomComPhooey · 28/02/2016 10:41

Can anyone explain the mayor's relationship with Maggi's mother? When she was so grief stricken I thought maybe she was the mayor's OW & he was Maggi's father. Then someone else said he'd been like a father to her. Then the mayor's widow said she had nothing to thank him for, which made me wonder if he looked out for Maggi's mother because she was his illegitimate daughter or something. The town gossips mentioned Leifr being Maggi's mother's (hereafter MM) Dad. Is Leifr the hotel owner or the other guy that went to Sigudur's dead father's house?

I noticed how many of the men had to duck under the door lintels when they went to Sigurdur's father's house - lots of tall, bearlike men.

Seeing the steaming hotpots (jacuzzis) and the different temperature signs out in the snowy yard at the pool when Asgeir went to clear the party kids out made me all nostalgic for our Icelandic trip. I want to visit again now, dammit!

I also thought some of the sweeping shots of the fjord and the snowy mountains were majestic. However, I also now get why so many Icelandic men have bushy beards. It looks bloody freezing in the winter. The only mystery is why they don't all have beards.

Fiderer · 28/02/2016 12:38

I wondered about the mayor too (esp as they focus seemed to be on Maggi) but as she was already in the office when the policeman arrived maybe she worked for him?

Also noticed the door ducking.

And I tell them to do their coat up and put on a hat

diddl · 28/02/2016 12:53

We don't know who Maggi's father is, do we?

I'd assumed the Mayor.

It was his comment to his wife about her being wrinkled & ugly(?) that made me assume that he was seeing someone else.

I was wondering all the bulid up to the kids being out & then it just fizzled out.

Although there were the pics that Hjortur had taken, surely just the pics of the oldest daughter would have been sufficient to show that he was watching them?

And the guy with the telescope-why does he never call anyone when he sees things?

Like the Mayor dragging his wife about!

PerettiChelsea · 28/02/2016 15:58

Y'know hen the ferry captain came back and said to the ginger bearded guy that he couldn't find any snowmen - was he pretending? I know the chef destroyed the snowman (yessss someone good!) but the captain did seem to look in the window

PerettiChelsea · 28/02/2016 16:02

Also the dead guy - the torso - was he part of the group of men who are pushing for the port? He was seen in the bar with one of them & now on film with G...... whatever his name is
Maybe he knows something that would've scuppered their plans & that's why he was killed?

diddl · 28/02/2016 16:03

I wasn't sure if he was lying or if he hadn't actually seen them.

But there were obvious "remains" of a snowman, weren't there?

PerettiChelsea · 28/02/2016 16:04

Also (sorry keep thinking of things) loved the scene in the church when Andri gave the most reassuring speech Wink....the killer is amongst us....!

PerettiChelsea · 28/02/2016 16:25

Yes maybe Maggi's father - or Grandfather?

SuburbanRhonda · 28/02/2016 16:38

Interview with Ólafur Darri Ólafsson here

RomComPhooey · 28/02/2016 17:04

the killer is amongst us....!

Yes, I think he definitely needs some comms or media training.

RomComPhooey · 28/02/2016 17:07

Thanks for the link, Rhonda. This quote suggests to me there are further series already made:

Ólafur Darri Ólafsson: I really love playing Andri. He has a certain honesty and empathy that I like. I got to watch Andri’s progression through the scripts over the past three years, which was fun to do.

Yay!

RomComPhooey · 28/02/2016 17:11

This bit made me laugh

TKT: If you go onto Twitter on a Saturday night, a lot of people watching here in the UK seem worried for Andri when he goes out into the storm without a hat (!), but this seems to me to somehow connect him to the landscape and the elements. What do you think?
ODO: This has been a big debate here in Iceland as well. This is how I would dress. I’m not good at dressing for the weather here in Iceland. But then again, I do have a bit more insulation than most people.

SuburbanRhonda · 28/02/2016 17:18

I can't work out why I find him so attractive Blush

RomComPhooey · 28/02/2016 17:36

He seems like a good Dad, a deep thinker, empathetic and he doesn't talk too much. What's not to love?

SuburbanRhonda · 28/02/2016 20:19

True, romcom.

Let's form an orderly queue then Grin

flightywoman · 28/02/2016 20:30

Can I join the queue?!

We binge watched the first 4 this week and then the most recent two last night.

I haven't the faintest idea what's going on!

BUT I had a thought that maybe the captain isn't such a villain after all - the remains of the snowman were obvious, and I thought he saw them through the window, but he didn't tell the other bloke on the ship. AND he made a real point of saying that he would only be detained with a Danish court order. If he really was the big bad surely he'd have just laughed and sailed away again? But he made absolutely sure that Andri knew what court order to get to keep them in port. I am wondering what's going on there.

The person who set fire to the shed had hair so it's not "I have important meetings" bald guy.

And I thought weak son was watching his wife with one of her students, but it could be his sister.

I am also working on the assumption that Maggi's dad was the wife-beater mayor. Maria's dad is the man who owns the fish freezer where the body was at first before it got nicked.

SuburbanRhonda · 28/02/2016 20:48

That's pretty good for not having the faintest idea flighty Smile

Please do join the queue (behind me, of course).

RomComPhooey · 28/02/2016 22:19

I thought the person that locked the mayor in the shed had a limp/difficulty walking. I got all excitable thinking it was wheelchair guy and maybe he can walk a bit after all. Then I remembered that Hinrika was with him when it happened. But now I vaguely remember Andri and Hinrika both noticing it as they were standing by their 4x4. To be honest, I'm wondering what I've seen and what I have imagined/muddled. I'm going to have a quick look now. I do think being wheelchair man is good cover - he's disabled and housebound so no one will think it's him, but he sees and knows everything. His vantage point on the hillside - and his excellent view of the fjord - mean he could easily have been a smuggling kingpin on the sly.
