Hmmm now I have outed myself professionally, I will advise.

HFM is an enterovirus, so basically temperature, rash/blisters/ flu symptoms. One of the main extra difficulties with it for younger ones is mouth ulcers which can be v painful, and then it can be difficult to get them to eat and drink. Basically it's self limiting, which means you have to just wait it out. Use paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain relief for ulcers, and basically keep hydrated, plenty of water.

So he is saved from the barbecue for now

Frankly, if I can't tempt them into action with bending over a real life chicken coop, then I don't think the guinea pigs will work either.
