Olivia Colman’s newly grown long grey hair

Madamefroufrou · 30/09/2026 10:27

This time last year she sported her usual brunette wavy pixie cut showing
all of her face.
This week she has long crinkly shades of grey hair we are led to believe
she has grown in twelve months, embracing the grey/natural ageing.
Does anyone have an opinion on this phenomenon or believe this heavy
hanging hank of hair looks attractive, or is it perhaps a Statement.

It makes her look a lot older than her 52 years.

No judgement from me on whether that's good, bad or neutral.

She looks like a happy, fashionable lady in her early 70s.

Either way, it looks dry as fuck. A good conditioner wouldn't go amiss.

No way does she look 8n her seventies.
I have realised loads of people are terrible at judging ages.

It's not "hate". Report hate if you see it here.
It's fine to find a celebrity annoying.

It is. I find Tom Hiddleston mildly irritating, for instance. But I don’t spout fury on the internet about him being a ‘not a nice person’ with ‘ridiculous beliefs’ who ‘looks dreadful’.

And what you can/should report to MNHQ is ‘hate speech’. Not the same thing.

feellikeanalien · 30/09/2026 11:38

I actually think she suits her hair better longer. No way does she look in her 70s.

I wouldn't even call that grey although there might be some grey bits in it.

MrsMitford3 · 30/09/2026 11:38

I assumed it was for a role.

Def similar to the hair she had in Fleabag-where she was fabulously horrible.

I don't think there is any way she grew it out in a year but I don't think she ever said she did?

I think she is one of those women who has looked the same vague age for a long time- she didn't look that different 10 years ago.
She is a chameleon for her roles who uses extreme hair changes to alter her looks for the parts she plays and seems to have fun with it.

CountFoscoslittlewhitemice · 30/09/2026 11:38

My hair is practically identical to that. It took considerably longer than a year to grow it.
I heard it was for a film.

I like it. I don't get the hate.

Edited

She has dared to age and look happy.

Motnight · 30/09/2026 11:39

Woman dares to change her hairstyle.

Shock! Horror!

It's not "trendy", it's personal preference. It's meaningless to say that she looks older than her age, what should 52 look like?

I agree! As someone greying since my 20s I find the “grey hair ages a person” argument a bit odd. Lots of us grey young, we’re just hiding it. But surely everyone knows that? The age women go grey and the age they stop dying their hair to pretend they’ve not are two different things and I’d have thought 52 was fair game for having grey hair but apparently not!

I don’t know if Olivia Colman’s new hair is natural tbh but I think it suits her and if it contributes to the “trend” of allowing women to have grey hair instead of having to dye it then I am all for it.

runnerducky · 30/09/2026 11:40

It’s just hair. Why is she leading anyone to believe anything? I think she looks lovely but even if she didn’t, I wouldn’t make threads about it on MN 🤷‍♀️

NancyThompson · 30/09/2026 11:40

I like her with long hair. There were flashback scenes in Fleabag where she has it long and I thought she looked lovely.

PorticoFolio · 30/09/2026 11:18

Gawd. It looks horrible. Has she never heard of conditioner.

Agree with others - her personality and political opinions are beyond tedious.

My hair looks like that if I don’t use product on it. Conditioner makes no difference as it’s too soft, which to me is what hers looks like. I need hard hold products like gel

Onegiantpupil · 30/09/2026 11:44

I personally really like Olivia Coleman and her work

Speaking about her hair though I like it and am trying to do mine the same way as I can’t be arsed to dye it anymore! I keep myself fit and wear a splash of colourful lipstick so I don’t look washed out

I cut mine short into a pixie to grow it naturally and let the greys come in and after a year it is shoulder length so it isn’t as difficult as you would think to go from short bleached blonde to almost the length she has

It’s just textured. Not everyone has shiny hair, it just has a matte surface texture
its frustrating when people say to me oh you need a good deep conditioner. No, it just makes my hair limp, my hair won’t ever shine because of the texture

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 30/09/2026 11:44

She looks great either way. But yes agree the waves look a bit frizzy in that pic, so a nice conditioner wouldn’t go amiss. As someone growing out a very short pixie, I haven’t even managed to grow mine to a decent a bob in a year! I read it was ‘a year to the ear’ which is about right for the centre of my hair on top. About 6 inches in a year is normal.

To get from her previous crop to this length would take most women several years. (If yours grows faster you’re very lucky!) so my money is on extensions, and most likely for a role as most people wouldn’t get extensions to end up looking this ‘natural’!

Which of her political opinions do you dislike?

There seems to be a campaign to cancel anyone, particularly women, who supports Palestinians.

canyouletthedogoutplease · 30/09/2026 11:45

I think you should write to her PR team about it.

Tell them it's got you very out of sorts on what would otherwise have been a perfectly agreeable Wednesday, that you do not agree with women making a Statement, that you don't like her "heavy hanging hank", and you would much prefer her to chop it all off so you can always see all of her face. She's clearly Showing Off and it's all for attention, and the nice sensible hair was much preferable to you.

I'm sure that would cause a few laughs, get shared round the office and then go straight in the bin where it would belong. If we spent as much time getting behind other women instead of slagging them off for their hair, face, wrinkles, fat arse, cellulite, greying, ageing.. imagine that.

Gloriia · 30/09/2026 11:46

Obviously a wig or extensions, longer hair suits her it's just a bit frizzy isn't it.

I'm more intrigued by the absence of her very gummy smile . Mustve had a tweak in that top lip!

HoldMyWine · 30/09/2026 11:47

RancidRuby · 30/09/2026 11:16

It’s so depressing, she looks like a normal middle aged woman and there’s fuck all wrong with that. Also depressing to see comments about her daring to have an opinion too.

So I take it you have no opinions on anyone apart from good ones?

Calliopespa · 30/09/2026 11:48

Turophiles · 30/09/2026 11:28

See, I’m completely baffled at the ire she seems to excite among some Mners. She was brilliant in The Favourite, and as the ghastly stepmother in Fleabag, and she and Elizabeth Debicki were much the best things about the first iteration of The Night Manager. I don’t get the weirdly excessive hate.

Neither do I.

If she had come up through Hollywood, she has the natural good looks (good bone structure, nice eyes) that I am sure she would now live on mineral water and egg whites and be considered a great beauty: "Olivia at 50 but looking 25." I wonder if that would make her "annoying."

Instead she gets on with being talented - and very versatile - but unaffected, and that is somehow being "annoying." I notice no-one has been able to articulate what is so annoying about her. I have no idea what her views are, despite rather admiring her as an actress, so she can't shout them that loud.

Her hair looks rather like it did in The Favourite (and you are right: she was brilliant).

Women tearing down women. And because she has not gone for a glamorous look, we can't even pretend it's pulling her down for setting unrealistic standards of beauty.

Creepybookworm · 30/09/2026 11:48

Women who dye their grey often get very defensive when another woman chooses not to. That's what all this 'she looks older, she looks 70' crap is about. No one ever says that about men.

It's very hard to keep dying your hair dark brown to cover grey. It' often starts to look harsh and false. That's not all her real hair anyway ...unless she is an alien who grows hair at incredible speed.

Strachalan · 30/09/2026 11:48

Looks a bit like my hair if I don't use conditioner. I think she suits it though, even if it looks a bit fraggly straggly. Maybe for a new role?

I actually laughed out loud at that post. If the PP genuinely believes that she looks in her seventies may I kindly suggest she goes to Specsavers!

Toodarktooearly · 30/09/2026 11:23

Well she clearly didn't grow it out in a year. It took me two years and looked pretty dreadful at first. I got a quote from a hairdresser who transitions you over to grey for £3000 it's still not natural but blends your growing grey in and you have to grow out the transition if that makes sense. I'd admire OC more if she said yep cost me a fortune and it's not natural yet but I'm on my way.

But she didn’t say anything about her hair, why on earth should she.

Alondra · 30/09/2026 11:50

She looks fabulous. I don't particularly care if it's her own hair or have extensions, she really looks good.

And I love the grey hair.
