Olivia Colman’s newly grown long grey hair

Madamefroufrou · 30/09/2026 10:27

This time last year she sported her usual brunette wavy pixie cut showing
all of her face.
This week she has long crinkly shades of grey hair we are led to believe
she has grown in twelve months, embracing the grey/natural ageing.
Does anyone have an opinion on this phenomenon or believe this heavy
hanging hank of hair looks attractive, or is it perhaps a Statement.

Quite. The hyperbole on this thread is astounding. It's like some posters want us to think Olivia Colman has been going round saying "this is my natural hair and I grew it all myself in a year to rail against internalised misogyny."

She hasn't mentioned her hair. Why is OP so angry about it?

Well she clearly didn't grow it out in a year. It took me two years and looked pretty dreadful at first. I got a quote from a hairdresser who transitions you over to grey for £3000 it's still not natural but blends your growing grey in and you have to grow out the transition if that makes sense. I'd admire OC more if she said yep cost me a fortune and it's not natural yet but I'm on my way.

I agree that it is likely extensions and could be for a role.

Just wanted to.point out that people's hair does grow at different rates so how our hair grows might not be the accurate measure that we think it is relative to someone else's hair growth.

Personally, I think she's quite pretty with very good skin and this look is striking fir her. I see nothing wrong and no reason to put her down with such mean comments even if it didn't look great.

Got to ask though, £3000 to blend in some greys? Really? Which salon stylist quoted you that? Just so I can avoid them!

Calliopespa · 30/09/2026 11:48

Neither do I.

If she had come up through Hollywood, she has the natural good looks (good bone structure, nice eyes) that I am sure she would now live on mineral water and egg whites and be considered a great beauty: "Olivia at 50 but looking 25." I wonder if that would make her "annoying."

Instead she gets on with being talented - and very versatile - but unaffected, and that is somehow being "annoying." I notice no-one has been able to articulate what is so annoying about her. I have no idea what her views are, despite rather admiring her as an actress, so she can't shout them that loud.

Her hair looks rather like it did in The Favourite (and you are right: she was brilliant).

Women tearing down women. And because she has not gone for a glamorous look, we can't even pretend it's pulling her down for setting unrealistic standards of beauty.

It's not "tearing her down" to disagree with her political statements. That's freedom of expression.

Yeah, I think some of these actors believe they have a unique insight into matters social and political.
Mate, learn your lines and don't bump into the furniture.

So women shouldn’t get older, have grey hair or political beliefs.

Well what ARE they? I don't even know - despite taking a general interest in her.

It's not "trendy", it's personal preference. It's meaningless to say that she looks older than her age, what should 52 look like?

We've become so used to women, especially one in the media trying to look young.

Worse than that, some people seem to think we owe them effort to look younger than we are. Grey hair can be 'ageing' because we're so used to attempts to hide it.

Why can't we look our age, why is that wrong/unattractive?

Saying that, i would struggle to leave my long hair grey. Society's messages soak in deep.

Isn't she just?. I saw part of her performance in the Crown, it was cringeworthy. I don't know why she's celebrated..

She's a great actress

Also, why are her statements not freedom of expression, but yours are?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/09/2026 11:55

I can’t stand her as an actress (exactly the same in everything she does) but I think it looks good on her, though I agree it could use a deep conditioning. It looks better than the short dyed cut imo.

You've got the wrong poster. I never said she shouldn't have freedom of expression. I just disagree with her.

Just not in The Crown.

So what are they? I'm genuinely interested.

Which of her political opinions do you dislike?

There seems to be a campaign to cancel anyone, particularly women, who supports Palestinians.

She campaigned for the release of Alaa fattah https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/dec/29/what-did-alaa-abd-el-fattah-say-past-social-media-posts-why-backlash
Fine she <like other celebs> obviously unaware of the offensive hate he'd spouted but if you're going to support someone publicly you should fact check before you make a tit of yourself.

Anyway, extensions and bad ones at that. I'd ask for a refund.

I agree. I had dark brown hair, I'm letting it go grey. I've had a lot of negative comments.

I recognise your username as you were recently posting on one of the 'so much hate on mumsnet' threads, about how you were brutalised by hateful posters on aibu. But apparently starting a thread like this is fine when you do it

Just not in The Crown.

To be fair, the Crown is hardly Hamlet.

How rude that people feel they can comment!

I did wonder how she has managed to grow her hair so quickly. A wig maybe ? She is still irritating as fuck whichever.

Doesn’t look like a wig. Extensions? 🤔

She looks great imo. Really suits her!

She's a great actress

She plays the same character ie herself in every role. I've never seen any divergence from the same persona.

Oh, another woman called me "brave", and the number of people who said dying it brown again would "take years off you"!
It's a shame that going grey - as a woman - is a radical act now!

heartsinvisiblefury · 30/09/2026 11:59

Justaquestionplease · 30/09/2026 10:46

It is trendy to say grey hair looks good particularly on these boards. Just as it's trendy to say pixie cuts look great. It's rare either of these things look good and irl vast majority of women don't want grey or very short hair because it isn't particularly flattering.

A lot of women don't suit long hair. Everyone suits different styles. Who knew?!

So the same in, say, The Lost Daughter and Willy Wonka?

I don't actually know what her political opinions are. I've never caught up with that.

But I do know that however much I agree or disagree with them, it doesn't make her a shit actress,

I bet you're one of those who think women over 40 need to cut their hair into a scrubbing brush.

greyss · 30/09/2026 12:02

"She's annoying, looks old, has dry hair and ridiculous beliefs"

Translation: I think she should shut up and not talk about people being killed. Because she won't, I hate her.
