Estée Lauder Double Wear has changed formula 😭

Was just about to order replacement bottles last night when "get a free beauty blender when you purchase the new Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation" caught my eye.

Sure enough, new bottle, new formula. After some googling, it seems the second ingredient in the foundation has now been banned from sale in Europe. I've just been to the Estee Lauder counter to get some samples of the new formula (I mix 2 different colours) so we'll see how the new formula holds up on my oily skin.

Anyone found anything equal to or better that Double Wear for oily skin? I like a full coverage look, and need something that won't disappear on my oily nose like cheaper foundations do! I'm not hopeful about this new formula, the sales assistant told me if I use a brush and stipple it on I will get better coverage, but if I need more I can "set it" with their Double Wear Veil powder (for £41!) Apparently the ingredients that has been banned is what makes the foundation stay on so long which is one of the reasons I love it 😥

Oh, and to top it all off, the old DW pumps do not fit the new DW bottles 😡

Following as I’ve always liked this foundation. I have an oily t-zone and have found my new bottle doesn’t cover so well!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/02/2026 20:02

I really like their Futurist now I’m older, but it might not be long lasting/matte enough for you.

TeaRoseTallulah · 04/02/2026 21:30

Ffs I read about this the other day , can you try it and update please? The reviews I've seen have been positive so I'm trying to be hopeful as it's the only foundation I like.

Laiste · 04/02/2026 21:37

Nooooo! What ?!?

😫

Laiste · 04/02/2026 21:37

Why can nothing good just stay the same?

KimTheresPeopleThatAreDying · 04/02/2026 21:40

Oh FFS. They ruined DW Light by replacing it with “Sheer” (sheer shit more like) and now they’re changing DW?

scoobydeedoo · 04/02/2026 21:42

I'll test it tomorrow and report back! I've also heard that the shades are not exactly the same as the previous formula, we'll see how I get on with the samples.

I used Revlon Colourstay religiously for years until it all of a sudden started sinking into the pores on my nose and making my skin look awful. I might have to give it another go if I don't get on with the new DW.

Yep 😥 I know they had no choice because one of the main ingredients is now banned, but it's a low blow to change the bottle so the bloody pumps won't even fit them (and the new pumps are £7, I'm sure the old pumps were £5 each)

I have switched recently to Georgio Armani luminous silk. It is very nice and I’ve been a devoted double wear fan since I was 15! I’m 41 for reference

PamelaShipman80 · 04/02/2026 21:48

Noooo! This is terrible news!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 04/02/2026 21:51

This is terrible news. <sigh> will have to go on the hunt for a new foundation then.

Totally agree with this. Have worn Double wear for 30 years but now I have discovered Futurist Hydra Rescue I won’t go back. I like a lot of coverage and Futurist gives it but with a softer, glowier finish than DW.

Ugh yes they did the same with the double wear concealer. I loved that product but the new formula is dry, cakey and even the shades don't match the previous. I bought the same number in the new formula but it's paler than the original. Gutted.

It’s lovely stuff. I like it much better than the DW.

FredaMountfitchet · 04/02/2026 22:02

Wore Clinique for thirty years then all formulations changed .
The search for perfect foundation continues looks like DW can be stroked off the try list

KimTheresPeopleThatAreDying · 04/02/2026 22:03

But does it last? It could be the nicest foundation ever but if it’s disappeared after a couple of hours it’s pointless

KimTheresPeopleThatAreDying · 04/02/2026 22:04

Replying to the praise of Futurist

Interesting! I've always gone for a matte finish, being really oily has ruled out anything with a glowy finish, although I'm noticed now I'm a little older my skin is not so oily.

I bought the futurist hydra after a few years of DW. Loved it at first but it doesn't cover as well or last on me..

I've been looking for an alternative because DW is looking very dry on my aging skin but my chin is stubbornly oily and red and only DW will stay on.

I did stock up on DW quite recently to get a GWP, I've 2 bottles in reserve. I've been regretting buying them but looks like that was the right move.

I wear Armani Luminous Silk too - have done for years. It's great. I also (as I have a tendency to flush along my nose & cheeks if too warm) use a Clinique green-toned primer very lightly below it.

I always apply loose translucent powder very lightly over my foundation, & sweep any residue off. Foundation on its own, for anyone with oily skin, will not last anywhere near as well as with loose powder on top.

The few times I've forgotten to apply the primer first, I've noticed that my foundation wears off slightly. It doesn't have to be the green one - Clinique does several, or I'm sure any other under-make up primer would do.

latetothefisting · 04/02/2026 23:35

do you know what the specific ingredient was, OP? I stockpiled a bottle or two so want to check if it's old or new style to see if there's a difference.

I think the lid is a different colour now

tanqueray10 · 05/02/2026 06:42

The futurist does last for me and I don’t retouch throughout the day. It doesn’t give the same baked on sticking power as DW but for me and my mid 40s skin that’s better now . I have tried Armani Luminous Silk and even recently spent a fortune on Victoria Beckham foundation- neither stayed on my skin properly.
Unfortunately it may be an expensive case of trial and error to see what suits you but fear not there is life after Double Wear!! x

I know I read the specific ingredient somewhere but I can't for the life of me find it! I've found this on an mua Reddit page though, so unsure how accurate it is:

"The reformulation has come about due to EU restrictions on cyclic silicones - D5 and D6 - such as Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane", apparently those ingredients are used in a lot of makeup designed for oily skin.

I personally prefer the new formula! It’s less cakey!!!!
