A "walking around " jacket?

Doteycat · 27/12/2025 14:35

Im trying to find a good quality nice jacket for "walking around" not sure if anyone will get me when i say that, but say for example , we are going on a city break end of Jan, so want a nice jacket that i can walk around see the sights, stop in a cafe and still be respectably dressed, comfy but decent. Not a long coat and not a going out jacket.
I cant seem to find one that is not a big puffer one, which are dreadful on me.
I do like the furry ones though.
Any suggestions?

Do you want a jacket that is warm or waterproof, or a more smart casual jacket?
Will the city break be in a wet and wintry climate?

I usually wear a waterproof parka style with a fleece underneath in winter, but the ideal me would be wearing my navy single-breasted pea coat or overcoat.

Tis Paris so who knows really, could be a beautiful near spring day, or could be BALTIC.
I need one i can basically throw over Jeans and my nice waling shoes, without looking frumpy.

Not furry but to me this looks like the perfect jacket, and lots of colours so hopefully one that speaks to you. I don't have one but I've been tempted for a while but no reason to get one really because it's very much like other jackets I've already got! 😂

Inspired by pea coats mentioned above, how about something on these lines? Could be layered up if it’s chilly or worn with a shirt/ thin sweater if sunny

It's got great reviews too! Repeat purchasers. And it's 100% cotton. And under £100.
It's bloody perfect I think (I don't need one, I don't I don't...)

Paris is wetter than London, and January will be cold.
I'd wear my usual attire and do some shopping in Paris.

UpMyself · 27/12/2025 15:16

@TemporarilyCantDoMyself , it looks nice, but I think OP would need a pac-a-mac.

My pea coat is probably more like the Superdry one but single-breasted (from M&S years ago) so looks more slim-fitting.

In my mind I look like Ines de la Fressange.

No idea how wet London would be tbh.
Been to paris in January and it was cold but bright and dry.
Honestly Ive no interest in shopping in Paris whatsoever. Id like to go prepared.
Thanks for the suggestions!

See I have one of these, a few tbh, its not a coat im after.
A jacket to wear over my jeans during the day, not a big heavy coat.
Not a fan of Peacoats at all Im afraid, Its my schoolday throwback.

It doesn't matter how wet it is. It could be dry all weekend apart from one downpour, in which case your pac-a-mac would be invaluable.

I probably wouldn't want to be shopping for a coat or jacket but if I was in Paris I might see people looking more stylish than in my local town.

Not a fan of Peacoats at all Im afraid You might be if you saw me in mine. Smile

(pac-a-mac are not stylish but I hate umbrellas)

You’d freeze in January in that Whistles one!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 27/12/2025 17:50

That Whistles jacket is for indoor wear or mild weather. Not winter outdoors.

Id look for a 'car coat'. Google, a few places seem to have them.

asparagusffern · 27/12/2025 17:53

Paris is freezing in January. I'd pick a jacket you love, peacoat for you, and put the Uniqlo ultra light down collarless jacket underneath and add a generous cashmere scarf on top. Paris is a great place to get a new scarf, they love them there!

Most likely baltic at the end of January

My 'pea coat' is probably a car coat. It's this sort of style
Cotton Rich Velvet Jacket | White Stuff | M&S
White Stuff Carrie Corduroy Jacket, Dark Navy
but wool-mix not cotton-mix

Thank you for the suggestion of a car coat - I’ve googled and found what I’m looking for!

Sorry to hijack your thread @DoteycatI’m going in 2 weeks. Hope you have a lovely time 😊

How about a tweed jacket? In a blazer cut. The tweed will be warmer than the admittedly lovely shape Whistles jersey one upthread.

I’ll link to Joules but there are a few around at higher and lower price points, including from specialist outdoor/country outfitters.

I have a dark green one and a navy one and I wear them loads.

For Paris in January you are going to need something substantial. Almost certainly waterproof, too. Not cotton, not corduroy.

Well, seeing as you asked.. https://www.asos.com/monki/monki-longline-coat-with-wool-in-dark-grey/prd/209375051#ctaref-more%20colours%20swatches&featureref1-more%20colours%20swatches

I prefer umbrellas to hoods (aware that’s weird) and have got my thermal lined tights and leggings ready (plus a load of base layers)
