A "walking around " jacket?

Doteycat · 27/12/2025 14:35

Im trying to find a good quality nice jacket for "walking around" not sure if anyone will get me when i say that, but say for example , we are going on a city break end of Jan, so want a nice jacket that i can walk around see the sights, stop in a cafe and still be respectably dressed, comfy but decent. Not a long coat and not a going out jacket.
I cant seem to find one that is not a big puffer one, which are dreadful on me.
I do like the furry ones though.
Any suggestions?

lol. Hello. It's called the internet.

Yes and its a scary, dangerous place clicking a link you are not familiar with.

I don't do Tiktok, nor do I wish to, so I won't be clicking your link.

Merry Christmas

But thanks to others for carcoat tip

I have a lovely lightweight Lands end down quilted jacket, very warm but not waterproof. However its a bit tired and there's a bit too much Sadworld to zip it up so I'm in the lookout for another option.

Google car coat.
Have a great Paris trip, its a place I love.

I recently bought an older version of this from ebay, just for dog walks.
But I'm finding I wear it all the time, so easy over anything, comfy and warm without being overbearing, I've never really been a coat wearer unless it's p'ing down.

I visited Paris once in February and never been so cold and I’m from Scotland! Wear many layers and a coat!

NigelForage · 28/12/2025 11:34

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupieikr

plis Barbour

My 'pea coat' is probably a car coat. It's this sort of style
Cotton Rich Velvet Jacket | White Stuff | M&S
White Stuff Carrie Corduroy Jacket, Dark Navy
but wool-mix not cotton-mix

I’ve just bought this! Thanks for the recommendation! No spend January doesn’t start for a few days right?

Grin I bet you love a Barbour, Nige. Grin I have never known anybody irl who wears Barbour jackets, but they're always getting suggested on here.

SurferRona · 28/12/2025 11:52

I would be looking at a tailored belted wax jacket, warm waterproof and smart. Vinted have loads but you may need to rewax (easy enough!)

Whoops, just spotted Remus’ post above 😂

UpMyself · 28/12/2025 11:58

@patooties , you're welcome.
@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie , I have 2 Barbour jackets. One's a big coat and the other is a light one.

I love my rab that you can stuff into its little pack. Fab for travelling/aeroplanes etc.

Hephebe · 28/12/2025 12:20

Ooh I love a Versatile Coat thread! And OP, I know just what you mean by "walking around jacket" 😁

Having said that, I'd be brass monkeys in Paris in January in some of these.

I have a long belted cashmere 80s double breasted coat (a bit When Harry Met Sally) that was a charity shop find a few years ago - if probably wear that because it's warm but light, and dries pretty quickly. If it's bucketing down I'm going to be in cafes, shops and restaurants anyway!

I'm not an umbrella fan so usually go for hooded coats but I've recently discovered detachable hoods that can be worn under the collar of any coat so it sorts of looks as though you have a hoody underneath. In fact it was a French brand I saw on Insta that inspired me to get looking for these (Fudoon I think) - I didn't actually buy one from there but found something similar on ASOS. The one I have is pretty waterproof and stuffs into my bag when not needed, life-changing.

On the subject of other Paris in Jan suitable coats - I have a very warm quilted sort of bomber jacket, hip-length, that's good for layering (the French love a quilted jacket). I also saw an interesting wool coat in the AND/OR sale the other day that might work, not really decided if I like it yet or not though:

I have a similar one which is really easy and versatile to wear on a day to day basis, but it can also look a bit smarter with a nice big scarf.

NigelForage · 28/12/2025 12:33

That quilted jacket. Tooooo cold

That quilted jacket. Tooooo cold

Nice cashmere or chunky jumper and a lovely hat and scarf. Coats are often too bulky. I've seen it IRL and have already sorted how to wear it and looking forward to it 😎

limetrees32 · 28/12/2025 13:24

I want the Brora swing one
But it's too expensive and I can't have it .
Loving the thread though!

TheSquareMile · 28/12/2025 13:35

Would a Barbour be suitable? There's quite a big range nowadays.

The classic Beaufort would allow room for warm layers underneath, like a soft polo neck.

IMTHECRAZYOLDLADY · 28/12/2025 13:54

I would just get a Uniqlo puffer and be done with it. They’re on offer at the moment and I have just bought one myself after selling a similar one on Vinted. I have the olive. I don’t love it, but it’s an option

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/12/2025 14:00

You need waterproof for Paris in the spring. Barbour?

Doteycat · 28/12/2025 14:11

I just don't like the Barbour for me tbh.
Dh has one which is lovely and sadly so does the dog.
I really dont fancy twinning in Paris 🤣
I found a lovely fur nobody's child which I like. The H and M one is gorgeous as is the other grey longish one .
I have gloves and scarves coming out my ears so im ok for them. Can't stand a hat so im an ear muffs and umbrella girl.
Loving all the suggestions though! I love when im show something/brand ive never heard of!

TheSquareMile · 28/12/2025 15:41

Would something in this style suit you - a shorter trench?
