A "walking around " jacket?

Doteycat · 27/12/2025 14:35

Im trying to find a good quality nice jacket for "walking around" not sure if anyone will get me when i say that, but say for example , we are going on a city break end of Jan, so want a nice jacket that i can walk around see the sights, stop in a cafe and still be respectably dressed, comfy but decent. Not a long coat and not a going out jacket.
I cant seem to find one that is not a big puffer one, which are dreadful on me.
I do like the furry ones though.
Any suggestions?

A "walking around " jacket?

Seriously, this thread is pretty bonkers!! I have the Whistles jersey blazer suggested above & it's a glorified cardigan. You would FREEZE in Paris in Jan in that + 90% of the other suggestions! WTF is going on?

I can only assume that the people recommending these crazy suggestions have never actually been to Paris. Especially not in January!

I've been there late Jan / v early Feb & we had everything from rain to sleet to snow & biting winds. Plus the odd blue sky but freezing day

I travel a lot & love winter city breaks. I would not be going without my long, warm wool / cashmere coat OR my COS puffa jacket which is hip length & fantastic. I bought it for a January trip to Berlin a couple of years ago & it is super useful & i've since worn it in Sweden in December twice, back to Berlin one December, Donegal one November etc

The coat i bring depends on what i plan to do there.

In Paris i would prob go for wool long coat, cashmere beanie & gloves & a couple of scarves.

There is absolutely no WAY i'd go in an Aran cardigan!!!

LucyLoo1972 · 29/12/2025 03:31

I got one from Boden that was kind of like a puffa coat without the puff! not sure how else to describe it I am short and chubby and I look terribel in Puffa coats too

GarlicRound · 29/12/2025 05:23

I'd quite like an excuse to get this. It's lined, but you'd need a jumper underneath.

Or this! I don't think you could waterproof the collar - though it does look fab.

I asked for clothes advice for Paris at the end of November. I went with a warm wool coat just below my hip and a very big scarf. It was forecast to rain and be about 4c but luckily it was dry but about 2c. It was freezing. I had a shirt, a merino jumper, a thick wool jumper, wool coat and wool scarf and I was still cold. I had winter Vans with a layer of Primaloft as well! I get the feeling January is likely to be very cold in Paris.

Everyone in there was wearing longer wool coats, big scarves and wide trousers. I debated on getting one of those wool snood/balaclava things I've seen around and think that would be useful addition for going in Jan.

I also saw a small but not insignificant number of women wearing actual fur coats which just added to the feeling that Paris gets cold!

Genuinely not into tweed at all and barbour is out too.
I look rediculous in the long puffy things. Im way too small.
Its actually quite hard to find one that I think bingo that will do!!!

But if you go for 99% of the suggestions on this thread you will be freezing cold and miserable - which isn’t a good look either.

RampantIvy · 29/12/2025 08:17

Do you really want the hassle of carting an umbrella around?

I am afraid that I never look that stylish in winter because I prefer a warm, windproof and waterproof coat with zipped inside pockets (pretty important for city breaks, especially Paris, which has a significant pickpocket problem) and a hood.

I love that Monki coat but it would not keep you warm.

mondaywin · 29/12/2025 08:18

I have recently bought this for similar purposes, it’s a good length for jeans and warm

In Paris? In January? Where it’s unlikely to get above freezing and snow and biting winds are possible? 🫣

GarlicRound · 29/12/2025 08:37

Or you could always get a vintage fur coat! There are always lots in the region of £100 on ebay. (Arguments are valid but the animals were killed for a different user, long ago. And nothing else is as warm.)

I’m honestly astounded that anybody would suggest this in 2025.

NigelForage · 29/12/2025 09:31

Bomber. No. It's cooolddd

RampantIvy · 29/12/2025 09:33

Do ultra fashionable people never feel the cold?

Southwest12 · 29/12/2025 09:34

I was in Venice last month, was about 7c and sunny, but cold. I had a wool blend long coat from M&S, gloves and a hat that I'd crocheted. I needed all of that, especially the hat. The coat was the best buy ever, has lovely big pockets too.

Would definitely go for longer and warmer.

owlpassport · 29/12/2025 10:11

The only decent suggestions so far (IMO) are Rab and Acai (which I have now bought, thank you @lemonraspberry !). You want to be able to walk around on a city break, not be constantly uncomfortable and finding ways to go indoors and get warm.

I have this from Rab Rab Women's Microlight Alpine Down Jacket | Countryside Ski & Climb. I've worn it in NYC in December and Canada in May, and all weathers in Scotland in between. It's very versatile, not too hot but definitely warm enough when layered with a jumper. Light to carry. The only downside is it isn't totally waterproof when it's pouring and you're outside for 30 mins +, but that's unlikely for you. Wear a nice jumper underneath, take the jacket off for photos. Bingo - warm, comfortable and stylish.

Women's Microlight Alpine Down Jacket

For the town. For the trail. For the rockface. With its active fit, recycled down and fabrics, and body-mapped baffles, the Women’s Microlight Alpine Jacket is the ultimate multipurpose women’s down jacket.

But the RAB one looks awful with nice clothes

NigelForage · 29/12/2025 10:30

Wear a normal long line wool coat and put under it this
https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E469862-000/00?colorDisplayCode=03&sizeDisplayCode=003
it's collarless so won't show.

NigelForage · 29/12/2025 10:30

Oops. Double posted

Rude. It doesn't look 'awful', it actually looks very nice with the clothes I wear on a city break. It's not going to look nice with a formal outfit, but that's not what OP is looking for. Practicality and comfort are key.

HettyMeg · 29/12/2025 11:23

What about a trench coat with a fleece/thin thermal jacket underneath? It would look smart but still casual and be comfy for walking around. Depends how much you feel the cold - this has been OK for me for colder days this winter teamed up with hat, gloves & scarf

Doteycat · 29/12/2025 11:25

Some super coats and jackets there many thanks!
While I do need something to take me around Paris, I just need one for my life in general too. I need a good wool coat and a jacket for walking the dog or popping to shops. So im super happy with this thread, not at all bonkers to me!
Im thinking a wool coat with the uniqlo under thingy and a shorter puffy one. I can travel in the long one and pack a short one.
I have a good few cashmere scarfs so ill take one of them and my leather lined gloves. I cant stand a hat but ill see how about that when I know the weather.
I want to be respectable but warm without that horrible clammy feeling you get from synthetic fabrics.

See I have one of these, a few tbh, its not a coat im after.
A jacket to wear over my jeans during the day, not a big heavy coat.
Not a fan of Peacoats at all Im afraid, Its my schoolday throwback.

Have you seen the Nicole jacket from Roake Studios? I have two, they’re brilliant- versatile, comfortable, flattering, and warmer than you think. They’re doing 15% off at the moment as well.

NigelForage · 29/12/2025 13:04

Cos wool coats are very recommended. I got one cheaper but thst style from marks - the green "car coat" here.
Out of stock now but is /was on sale. With the Uniqlo thing
