A "walking around " jacket?

Doteycat · 27/12/2025 14:35

Im trying to find a good quality nice jacket for "walking around" not sure if anyone will get me when i say that, but say for example , we are going on a city break end of Jan, so want a nice jacket that i can walk around see the sights, stop in a cafe and still be respectably dressed, comfy but decent. Not a long coat and not a going out jacket.
I cant seem to find one that is not a big puffer one, which are dreadful on me.
I do like the furry ones though.
Any suggestions?

I have a Barbour international for this kind of purpose

It's irrelevant really until you know the weather forecast

What's a Spencer??

battery-heated gillet with extra battery. Choose a gillet with heating behind the neck. Size it so you wear it close to your skin with other layers on top.
It will keep you toasty warm. Then you can wear whatever coat you want over the top.

Keep gloves, beanie and non-buldy woollen scarf in your bag.
And of course, solid damp proof shoes and warm socks.

Take a stash of disposable hand warmers -- they're great in pockets as well as gloves. Give any spares to parents of footballers!

A thin, short, waterproof Barbour Jacket. They are expensive but unbeatable. Look classy but not too dresses up in any situation. Can layer to be very warm or with a t shirt can even be worn when it’s 20-25 degrees. Decent pockets too.

NigelForage · 28/12/2025 08:05

The thing about
barbour jackets though is they smell

I find them really heavy as well. When you're travelling, you want something light.

I’ve got one of the Whistles jackets mentioned upthread. You should think of it as a cardigan rather than as a coat - very little warmth to it and not up to winter. It’s really useful for April, but for January, OP will need something warmer.

Inspired by pea coats mentioned above, how about something on these lines? Could be layered up if it’s chilly or worn with a shirt/ thin sweater if sunny

That's nice.

This is gorgeous! And so reasonable. I’ve just bought it 💕

dudsville · 28/12/2025 09:17

Ooh, layer that pretty red collarless jacket under that pretty grey monki number. Get a fabulous wool scarf and mittens... Super cute!

Not furry but to me this looks like the perfect jacket, and lots of colours so hopefully one that speaks to you. I don't have one but I've been tempted for a while but no reason to get one really because it's very much like other jackets I've already got! 😂

I have this very jacket. It suited me for Rome at Easter - around 16 degrees C.

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 28/12/2025 09:33

I like these - cosy and warm but structured

No need. Really.

KateDelRick · 28/12/2025 09:47

Anyway, this thread seems to have taken an unpleasant turn, so I'll leave it there.
Have a fabulous time in Paris, @Doteycat !
I hope you find a suitable coat 😊

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/12/2025 10:28

This thread is bonkers. Jersey jackets, tweed jackets and cardigans being recommended for Paris in January.

locketrocket · 28/12/2025 10:36

I’m taking all the good ideas from this thread, thank you (plus checking the forecast as two weeks today I'll be there)

BUT the biggest thing is that I’ve suggested a coat which everyone some posters think is cute and beautiful 🥰🥰🤣

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/12/2025 10:40

And did somebody really suggest actual fur? I’m gobsmacked.
