A "walking around " jacket?

Doteycat · 27/12/2025 14:35

Im trying to find a good quality nice jacket for "walking around" not sure if anyone will get me when i say that, but say for example , we are going on a city break end of Jan, so want a nice jacket that i can walk around see the sights, stop in a cafe and still be respectably dressed, comfy but decent. Not a long coat and not a going out jacket.
I cant seem to find one that is not a big puffer one, which are dreadful on me.
I do like the furry ones though.
Any suggestions?

No help with the coat I'm afraid, but we went to Paris in early February. It was wet, windy & absolutely artic temperatures.
All the Parisian women were wearing long puffy coats that looked like sleeping bags!

KateDelRick · 27/12/2025 18:27

I was going to say that the default in Paris is a long puffa jacket!

ineedhelp37 · 27/12/2025 18:29

Lululemon or Blakeley jackets

soupyspoon · 27/12/2025 18:33

A short trench coat surely. Big enough to wear jumpers under though as they're not particularly warm

Im fed up of putting big coats on to be honest, because the problem is you go int a cafe or restaurant, theres no where to put it without it dragging on the floor, go into a loo and theres no hook the floor is filthy and wet, how do you manage to sit on the loo without it all dragging over the floor (had this today in some chichi cafe, all fur coat and no knickers - the cafe not me)

When shopping no where to put the coat while you're trying things on. They're all just too big and heavy.

KateDelRick · 27/12/2025 18:40

A trench coat will not be warm enough, even with a jumper underneath.
If you go to a decent restaurant, especially in Paris, there is always somewhere to hang your coat.
Sit on it in a cafe. Put it across your knees in a toilet if there's no hook.
I'd rather be warm, enjoying the wonderful city, than cold and wet!

Sézane - Will. I wore it in Paris in October, a mix of wet and chilly

I know you said not a long coat, but I have an earlier iteration of this Boden knee length single breasted coat and it is by far the most versatile coat I have ever owned.

I recently bought this:

Might be too lightweight but I've been wearing it out and I've been finding it really warm. It sizes up big so you can put layers under if needs be and maybe team a big fluffy scarf with it.

Well, seeing as you asked.. https://www.asos.com/monki/monki-longline-coat-with-wool-in-dark-grey/prd/209375051#ctaref-more%20colours%20swatches&featureref1-more%20colours%20swatches

I prefer umbrellas to hoods (aware that’s weird) and have got my thermal lined tights and leggings ready (plus a load of base layers)

This is BEAUTIFUL

That looks cosy.

I know what you mean about layers. Menopausal means it all at layers that can be removed and added 😊

TheOGCCL · 27/12/2025 22:13

I've got this H&M one which is lightweight but surprisingly warm. Bargain in the brown.

https://www2.hm.com/engb/productpage.1282393001.html

It doesn't have a hood which is probably an issue for a city break. The problem is as soon as you add a hood to anything you lose a certain chicness. No

battery-heated gillet with extra battery. Choose a gillet with heating behind the neck. Size it so you wear it close to your skin with other layers on top.
It will keep you toasty warm. Then you can wear whatever coat you want over the top.

Keep gloves, beanie and non-buldy woollen scarf in your bag.
And of course, solid damp proof shoes and warm socks.

Take a stash of disposable hand warmers -- they're great in pockets as well as gloves. Give any spares to parents of footballers!

Can you shop in a vinted shop and try on dark furs?
Or fake fur but they won't be as warm or waterproof.?

Dark waterproof puffer coats look practical.

NigelForage · 28/12/2025 07:08

Get a wool coat with a Uniqlo thin puffer underneath - the collarless one.

user1492757084 · 28/12/2025 07:15

Wear a spencer under woollen layers and a dark Driza-bone.
