A "walking around " jacket?

Doteycat · 27/12/2025 14:35

Im trying to find a good quality nice jacket for "walking around" not sure if anyone will get me when i say that, but say for example , we are going on a city break end of Jan, so want a nice jacket that i can walk around see the sights, stop in a cafe and still be respectably dressed, comfy but decent. Not a long coat and not a going out jacket.
I cant seem to find one that is not a big puffer one, which are dreadful on me.
I do like the furry ones though.
Any suggestions?

That Sezanne coat would be perfect wouldn't it ?
anyone find a dupe ?

Namechangedndnf · 28/12/2025 16:54

Pea coat with proper closures and high neck. Not blazer style for winter.

Layers underneath. Uniqlo heat tech and cashmere/wool over the top. With a scarf.

Would something in this style suit you - a shorter trench?

Almost £2000 for a cotton trench? And probably freeze to death for your £20000 too?!

Hephebe · 28/12/2025 17:03

Just had a squiz at the JL sale section using the keyword "wool" and there were some really nice longish belted coats of the type I mean in my post above. One even nicer than mine, with a high (but quite loose, so wouldn't feel restrictive) funnel neck.

And an ugly impractical colour.

Woollen pea coat.

You’d freeze in January in that Whistles one!

Indeed. I have one and it is literally just a work blazer. There is no warmth in it whatsoever and you can realistically only fit a thin jumper under it. I have been to Disneyland Paris in early Feb and it was the coldest I have ever felt. Surely every single person will either be bundled in a big wool coat or a massive puffer?

vanillalattes · 28/12/2025 17:18

Why is everyone recommending super lightweight jackets?

Paris in January is unlikely to get much above freezing 😬

Edited

I think a few people are just imagining based on instagram pictures of skinny young influencers in no coats, and forgetting that they probably do that for only absit 15 seconds for a photo.

I have no idea. Someone up thread recommended a cardigan.....for Paris in January! Poor @Doteycat would freeze her tits off in that!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/12/2025 18:15

I also suspect some of the recommendations come from people who are used to driving everywhere, so don’t actually spend much time outdoors.

Frannyisreading · 28/12/2025 18:28

I would look in Oliver Bonas. I got a lovely thick bomber jacket in there recently which is comfortable but not formal.

DailyMaui · 28/12/2025 18:38

I got a gorgeous brand new faux fur jacket on Vinted for the grand sum of £9.50. It still had the tags on for £89! I have worn it to every smart Christmas do I have been to, attracting more compliments than I was expecting. It is very smart and also very warm. I do feel very chic in it, way more than I do in my warm but rudimentary long coat puffa.

There seems to be a glut of fake fur coats on there at the moment. And you've got time to get one sent (although my last two Vinted purchases never made it our of the seller's home...)

TheSquareMile · 28/12/2025 19:01

Would something from Holland Cooper be suitable? I'm sure that I saw Francesca Cumani, the racing broadcaster, wearing a gorgeous Holland Cooper trench for a broadcast.

Utility jacket, thin warm base layers, gloves, scarf and umbrella x👌

This thread too annoying.

Hereagain2 · 28/12/2025 19:55

Harris Tweed or Barbour. You can get smart ones for about town and they are designed for ‘walking around’ House of Bruar have a good selection.

This thread is bonkers. Jersey jackets, tweed jackets and cardigans being recommended for Paris in January.

I know! I’m looking at all these short jackets and shivering. For Paris in January you need a full-length warm coat.

NigelForage · 28/12/2025 20:15

No to fkn tweed or Barbour

YOURE IN PARIS

Doteycat · 28/12/2025 21:27

Genuinely not into tweed at all and barbour is out too.
I look rediculous in the long puffy things. Im way too small.
Its actually quite hard to find one that I think bingo that will do!!!

Would this Hobbs' one work? You've said you didn't want full length.

Absolutely
About 20 years ago, I was in Paris in January and it was so cold, I went and bought a long length thick puffer jacket - they were not that common in the UK then and I felt quite continental.
It has been worn several times in Paris in winter since then
