What are you wearing for your Christmas parties this year?

What are you wearing for your Christmas parties this year? I’m in need of some inspiration. I’ve got a couple of things coming up – both are more “going out” than formal, so nothing too dressy. I’m 50 and trying to find the right balance!

Any ideas welcome! :-)

I'm treating myself to something from Joe Browns, probably in cerise. Not decided exactly what yet though, my basket is overflowing...

CharlotteByrde · 23/11/2025 18:43

@RampantIvy I love that dress!

@RampantIvy I love that dress!

It comes up large. I am a 12/14 so I bought a 12. It was like a tent on me so I bought a 10, and it is still too big, but I wear it anyway.

They do come up long though. I'm 5'7" and it is maxi length on me.

henlake7 · 23/11/2025 19:10

Loving hearing about all the party outfits but it's made me realise I have literally nothing I could wear to a party.
TBF though the only kind of party I'd go to would probably involve onesies and a takeaway!😂

WolfieMuma · 23/11/2025 19:14

Mine was last night. I wore a burgundy coloured velvet dress that I had bought and never worn for Christmas a couple of years ago.

I felt way out of my comfort zone and didn’t like it at all. It went straight into the bag for the charity shop this morning

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 23/11/2025 21:28

I have this to wear this year, to be honest I have so many options but this is new and there is no greater feeling than a new dress!

Kayemm · 24/11/2025 00:33

@rampantivy Does it need ironing after washing?

It's gorgeous and I do keep looking at their dresses but I'm not ironing!

No, not at all.

I am only on this thread to see what everyone else is wearing and to see the feather sandals. I am going nowhere glamorous but love to look at the clothes.

Me too!

I haven't been to a Christmas party since I worked in the City 18 years ago!

But love to look at a good frock.

SmoothCollie · 24/11/2025 07:32

Workplace- casual pub lunch and drinks I will wear silver sequined body suit and wide leg leather trousers with boots

I have two more to go go and no outfits for those yet. I'm hoping to get shopping this week. I have v little clothes at the moment due to weight gain.

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 24/11/2025 08:13

No parties for me - folks don’t seem to throw them anymore! I have a few Christmassy things to go to but not where you can really dress up. For example a Cathedral concert tonight which is likely to be very cold, especially as we’re sitting high up in The Gallery! 🥶

Floisme · 24/11/2025 08:28

Oh I’m not going to any actual parties! It’s mostly lunches and teas with retired gentlefolk, only one of them is evening and more demographically mixed. I’m just in a mood for dressing up,

MorrisZapp · 24/11/2025 08:31

What's all this cami business? An actual spaghetti strap camisole?

MorrisZapp · 24/11/2025 08:32

My second hand dress is arriving from vinted today. Could go either way! I'll report back if it's a winner.

PeonyRose8 · 24/11/2025 10:09

This is sad, ours has been cancelled so I had to return all my possible outfits.
I think a skirt & one shoulder top always looks good, fashionable & can wear both items again!! Win win!

Kitted · 24/11/2025 10:52

Good thread. I need to think about my Boxing Day dress. I think I'll order the order the Montpellier Platform Sandals on the Joanie website - they look like good party shoes!

Me three!

I am living my Xmas partying days vicariously through Mumsnetters 😁 Keep posting those pics please!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/11/2025 17:39

No real parties here either. I’m off for afternoon tea with some friends, plus a couple of pub jaunts with friends and a ‘nice’ meal with DP.

MethodHandbag · 24/11/2025 17:52

I have a gold long dress from Vinted but have no idea what to wear with it. I like to wear tights to cover up scars on my legs but do I wear sheer black or nude?

It is black tie but I can’t wear heels as I’m due an operation, so I don’t know what to do with my feet. 😆😆

It is in a castle but I’m not staying in the main building so wouldn’t even be able to totter in heels without rendering myself unable to walk for days.

FastTurtle · 24/11/2025 17:58

NYE restaurant with a disco
and to a Christmas party, knee length swingy dress with sequin arms.

Pre Christmas pub diner with friends, slightly sparkly jumper with a short skirt, either leather or checked.

Londonmummy66 · 24/11/2025 18:08

@MethodHandbag - these flats with nude tights would be good with your dress. I only wear evening flats now as standing around in heels isn't my idea of fun. https://www.next.co.uk/style/su473034/aj1469?srsltid=AfmBOooRIciDX8ma-kaDQ2KnLEOgYnMFgjBd8Onqre2jUxDZX4jm4PDz03s

I have the lucky position of a few parties this year. One last week I wore a black velvet strappy midi dress with sheer tights and black suede flats with ballet style ribbons.

I have a black tie coming up but it will be cocktail rather than floor length so I will wear this dress with a navy shrug pinned firmly into place with my beloved black safety pins. Same shoes as before with sheer tights. https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-sleeveless-lace-slip-midi-dress-navy/p113720846

Canapes at a neighbours house - black wide leg trousers with a petrol blue silk jacket with black embroidered bead work.

Christmas day drinks - a new cord dress with a stand collar and tassel boots as it will be outside.

Worldgonecrazy · 24/11/2025 19:11

I e reached that stage in life (late 50s) where I no longer feel I need to look acceptable, so for my handful of Christmas parties I will be wearing sequinned evening gowns, even if others are in jeans and a nice top. Life is too short to not wear the over the top dress I bought on impulse in a sale.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 24/11/2025 19:39

Our Christmas party this year is a meal out in a restaurant rather than the usual dinner dance type affair. I'll be wearing this from Monsoon with kitten heel ankle boots.

This Maison Wanda knitted jumpsuit for late afternoon drinks. It’s flattering, not over dressy, but has enough sparkle to feel special. And I like the slightly retro vibe.

For NYE I’m going to wear this dress that I had a thread on recently. It’s a bit marmite but you lovely lot gave me the confidence to go for it. I cannot wait.

STARBURST JUMPSUIT

Knitted jumpsuit with Crystal Starburst, Batwing Sleeves & Retro panel Detailing. A jumpsuit that feels like loungewear but looks like you’re about to be papped après-ski in 1987? This one’s got it all: soft, muted berry tones. A pop of mustard. A...
