What are you wearing for your Christmas parties this year?

What are you wearing for your Christmas parties this year? I’m in need of some inspiration. I’ve got a couple of things coming up – both are more “going out” than formal, so nothing too dressy. I’m 50 and trying to find the right balance!

Any ideas welcome! :-)

I’ve bought some black sequin wide leg trousers from a local boutique which I’ll get a lot of wear out of with various tops/shirts

I'm 46 so too old for Christmas parties really. I work alone so no work party (party of one is not much fun!!) I love a sparkly dress but nothing to wear one for.

I’m older than you and have many 😂

Perhaps grab a friend and go somewhere for a sparkly cocktail or two?

Mrsnothingthanks · 27/11/2025 21:35

@chipsticksmammy It's mostly a cost thing for me as I have a little one and two teenagers I prioritise re gifts. I'm not a big one for going out now - cheaper to drink at home and less effort needed! I'm 45 so past my glam days!

bouncydog · 27/11/2025 21:45

We only have one night out planned where I can be a bit smarter. Planning on wearing some wide leg black trousers from Next, with a silver sequin top and silver trainers. Topped by either a black velvet jacket or a cropped leather one I’ve had over 25 years! I’m 67 but don’t feel the urge to wear oldies clothes!

Of course 46 isn’t too old for a Christmas party! You may not have one to go to this year, but that’s not because you are too old.

I am 57, theme is "Disco" and I am chanelling Cher Studio 54 mobster glam - this is my inspiration pic. There will be a lot less skin on show (i.e.none) but I have fab gold dress and massive cream faux fur coat both from Vinted.

Considering making a head piece for some "extra" bling.

Very pleased with how it has come together this year.

This is amazing! Love it.

@Fairgamer These things really are not a priorty for the less wealthy. Ballpark figure - how much do such parties cost?

I suppose it depends on what you define as a party but many pubs and social clubs will have ticketed events with bands, disco etc which are not at all expensive. Sure, you wouldn’t wear a ball gown but maybe jeans and a sparkly top? Asda have lots of things with sequins on.

It’s so much cheaper! I hope you have a lovely time over the next few weeks with your family ❤

Nowhere fancy, a lunch and possible house party…the below with silver glittery boots, if I dare!

I'm also 50. I've got a mix and match of stuff. A short black sequinned skirt, a fitted black top with chiffon polkadot sleeves, a short black dress with a bauble print, a black/red flower print wrap dress, navy velvet jacket, navy sequinned top, black sequinned jacket, short red dress, couple of fitted t-shirts/tops, black jeans, blue jeans, red, black or pewter ankle boots, black knee high boots, silver Converse. The only rule is I don't wear all the sequinned stuff at once together!

GlumShoe · 28/11/2025 08:18

We're going bowling for our Christmas night out. It seemed like a good idea at the time but now it's upon us (next weekend) I've realised what a nightmare it is to dress for. We'll be going for a few drinks round town later. What should I wear?
I'm thinking black jeans, sequinned top, blazer and ankle boots? I don't want to look too casual for drinks in town but I also don't want to be all "look at me", especially since I'm really crap at bowling. Would that be ok? I'm 48 and a UK size 12.

BestIsWest · 28/11/2025 14:53

That sounds perfect to me @GlumShoe.

A 1960s cocktail dress. Probably overkill for the dos I'm going to but I've not been out late at night all year.

Ohh I love the sound of that.

I dont have any parties although I'll be seeing my dad and probably going out for a meal.and seeing my son and his family too.

I have 3 pairs of black.velvet trousers and a teal velvet tshirt, I.also have a number of Christmas tops so I'll wear one of these

You have three pairs of velvet trousers?!!!!!!
Why?

Love the black one! Where’s it from?

ReadingTime · 28/11/2025 23:06

I've just bought this metallic skirt from Roman which is really comfy and flattering and will go with lots of different tops. It's a long ankle length on me, the model in the photos must be very tall!

I also ordered the sequin top from there someone recommended earlier, but am sending that back, the body was too tight and the sleeves too baggy, and the sequins kept catching each other whenever I had my arms by my sides.

Thank you OP for starting this thread, I don't normally think about this question until 1/2 an hour before I need to leave, when I discover I have nothing at all to wear.

this bad boy. I love it so much! With knee high black boots and a silky black cami under a cropped black jacket

That is AMAZING.

It has been a busy day of deliveries today. The Peacocks sequin top arrived and is the perfect colour to co-ordinate with the M&S aubergine trousers. If it is the same one as @ReadingTime ordered, I agree that the body is quite form fitting but that works well with the wide leg trousers so, on balance, I am going to keep it.
@Flannelfeet - that Joe Browns blouse is lovely. My DH glimpsed it as I was unwrapping it and he said it looked fantastic. A ringing endorsement, indeed! Thanks again for the recommend. It will be worn on heavy rotation!
