What are you wearing for your Christmas parties this year?

What are you wearing for your Christmas parties this year? I’m in need of some inspiration. I’ve got a couple of things coming up – both are more “going out” than formal, so nothing too dressy. I’m 50 and trying to find the right balance!

Any ideas welcome! :-)

Gorgeous but 💰💰💰💰

@Jade3450 My friends are all in their late 40s/50s and wouldn't host parties. I imagine it's because none of my friends are wealthy so money at Christmas is prioritised elsewhere. And not the sort of parties you'd need to dress up for at any rate (again, this costs). Parties are expensive - we have rent to pay!

I'm 46 so too old for Christmas parties really. I work alone so no work party (party of one is not much fun!!) I love a sparkly dress but nothing to wear one for.

Hm.. you can always travel or celebrate in a restaurant, shared party a hotel, or simply travel with a group who are in same situation as yours (they can be found online), spa vacation as a gift to yourself etc. Unless Christmas is really not your thing which is understandable. But you are never too old and there's other interesting ways than to celebrate traditionally with family or colleagues

@Fairgamer These things really are not a priorty for the less wealthy. Ballpark figure - how much do such parties cost?

Totally fair point, a lot of the options I mentioned can vary wildly in price. But there are low-cost versions too, like community meet-ups, shared potlucks, volunteering and after-party or local events that don’t cost much. I wasn’t suggesting luxury things as a must, just that there are non-traditional ways to spend the day , of course, if it's something you want to.

Geneticsbunny · 27/11/2025 13:36

@evilharpy those are both lovely. Thanks. I have a weird mix of undertones so can get away with gold as long as it is towards the cooler end. I see what you mean about the top I ordered and the waist. I will check when it arrives.

Totally different discussion as to what’s being asked on this thread which is what people are wearing to the parties they ARE attending.

merrypoet · 27/11/2025 14:11

I have a few parties/events and still deciding what to wear. So far these are the two I will definitely be wearing for the dressy parties.

Edited

My friends and I host parties - we all just bring a bottle and some nibbles. Music, a bit of a dance, it doesn’t have to be expensive.

I am wearing a floor length silver sequin skirt and mixing and matching different jumpers for house party and dinners out.
It is so versatile.

I’m 61 and have 3 main events in December. One is a Christmas party with around 40 friends/family, where I’ll be wearing red silky/satin wide leg trousers and a long sleeved, white lacey top with red suede heels 👠. The next is a Christmas ball with friends at a city hotel (black tie event)…I’ve got a long black dress…chiffon skirt part and sequined top half. Pairing this with silver accessories. The final one is a dinner at a posh restaurant…I’ve got a black wide legged jumpsuit, which has a sparkly top half - pairing this with gold accessories.

I may possibly wear the red pants on Christmas Day, with an ivory cashmere jumper instead of the lace top. They deserve more than one outing this year 🥰

I am 57, theme is "Disco" and I am chanelling Cher Studio 54 mobster glam - this is my inspiration pic. There will be a lot less skin on show (i.e.none) but I have fab gold dress and massive cream faux fur coat both from Vinted.

Considering making a head piece for some "extra" bling.

Very pleased with how it has come together this year.

I have a long gold sequin skirt I wear all season too.
I initally made it for a Xmas party years ago & still wear it with various tops.
Very easy, very versitile.

Love the black one! Where’s it from?

This sequin skirt bought on Vinted; For one party which is afternoon drinks and food I’ll wear with these boots, sheer black tights and a silver chunky knit glittery jumper from Allsaints that I’ve had for years. On the evening do with the same boots, a velvet lace trim cami top and a black velvet blazer.

We clearly have quite similar tastes in Christmas dressing up attire. Your jumper sounds great.

Can you share a link to your cigarette troos please?

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Who does one party with in their late 40s/50s? I have no work colleagues and family all old!

In that case, I’d be quite happy to wear sequins to the pub, even if just dp and I.

Iamblossom · 27/11/2025 19:04

I’ve bought a gorgeous cream sequin top from peacocks
