What are you wearing for your Christmas parties this year?

What are you wearing for your Christmas parties this year? I’m in need of some inspiration. I’ve got a couple of things coming up – both are more “going out” than formal, so nothing too dressy. I’m 50 and trying to find the right balance!

Any ideas welcome! :-)

Long sleeve sequin top Just got this in the sale for £22 to go with M&S aubergine wide leg trousers.
For the pub I will wear bronze sequin midi skirt with black jumper and boots that got lots of compliments last year.
And also a gold lurex victorian style blouse with dark denim jeans.
For the My Life Story gig coming up in December I will wear a gold sequin mini dress and DMs - because I will sparkle!

I have to say a huge thank you to you - not just for the clothes, but for reminding me of all the (twelve) reasons why I love My Life Story. This afternoon has been brilliant, and very loud. Have the most amazing time!

Our work do is just a lunch. I've ordered this to wear with a pleather pleated skirt and flat boots: https://www.debenhams.com/product/oasis-sequin-collar-cardiganbaa12341?colour=brown

That's so lovely to hear. This Zoe Williams Guardian article sums things up rather nicely.

I’ve spent decades loving a band you’ve probably never heard of. But there are 199 others who get it | Zoe Williams

Remember My Life Story? They managed to fill one of London’s most iconic venues on Saturday. So what if it’s also one of the smallest, writes Zoe Williams

Oh no… is it because it’s already on sale?

lindyloo57 · 26/11/2025 18:06

O I thought it was 15% off of sale price.

MiddleAgedDread · 26/11/2025 19:33

I’m avoiding the issue by not going!

I have just panic bought this thanks to this thread. Everyone I have spoken to is doing " jeans and a nice top" for my work do. Is this top dated? https://www.wolfandbadger.com/uk/nitty-gritty-gold-metallic-top/

bridgetreilly · 26/11/2025 23:56

@Londonmummy66 where is your cord dress from? I’ve been really struggling to find one I like this year.

Mrsnothingthanks · 27/11/2025 00:03

I'm 46 so too old for Christmas parties really. I work alone so no work party (party of one is not much fun!!) I love a sparkly dress but nothing to wear one for.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/11/2025 06:19

Even 106 isn’t too old for parties! Not that I ever really go to any, but I hate the thought that there’s an age limit on partying.

That’s lovely - not “trendy”, but very wearable and means you may not be surrounded by six of something the same or similar!

Geneticsbunny · 27/11/2025 07:53

Can anyone recommend something more upto date and sparkly that I could wear with jeans incase the one I ordered is awful on?

What size and body shape are you?

EllaPaella · 27/11/2025 09:12

This sequin skirt bought on Vinted; For one party which is afternoon drinks and food I’ll wear with these boots, sheer black tights and a silver chunky knit glittery jumper from Allsaints that I’ve had for years. On the evening do with the same boots, a velvet lace trim cami top and a black velvet blazer.

@evilharpy size 12 hourglass, currently have a curly mullet/wolf cut. Am middle aged but like to keep up with current trends. Normally walk a fine line between "trying a bit too hard" and looking like I follow current trends. Don't always get it right because I don't put quite enough effort into actually working out what the trends are. Love things which are interesting or unusual but without falling into that "quirky" box. Not scared of a bold colour or an unusual shape. Generally suit "wintery jewel" colours. Planing to wear with wide leg jeans but might treat myself to some new jeans too if the top needs them. Budget about £100 for the top and similar for jeans.
(thanks for offering to help I appreciate it).

I fell in love with it seeing the red one on the mannequin (but red isn't my colour). The lady who owns the business was lovely as well.

@Geneticsbunny do you like this? I was thinking it would look great on an hourglass with wide leg jeans to define your waist.

I do like the top you've ordered but if you suit jewel colours then you might be better in silvery or more gun metal colours than gold. Also as a pear, the hem of your top would sit in an awkward place for me and make me look a bit square, but I'm not sure if that would be the case for you.

Um, friends?

Just because you’re in your 40s/50s doesn’t mean you don’t go to parties any more, surely? Why?
