When will people stop tucking their tops in at the front of jeans etc

I thought this would be one of those things that wouldn’t last long because people would realise how stupid it looks, but it showing no signs of stopping. Like the woman in this photo. I can’t be the only one who thinks this half tucking thing looks really, really silly. Can I?

I like it, it accentuates the waist and makes your legs look longer, much better than having it all out and nicer than having it all in I think

Why do you dislike it so much, would you prefer it to be all ‘in’ all ‘out’

GameofPhones · 29/09/2025 01:13

I've only ever seen it on models in adverts. It frankly puzzled me, and I decided 'oh it must be to show how the top looks either loose or tucked in, to save having two photos of a top'. Silly me.

FoxAndSquirrel · 29/09/2025 02:11

Ex fashion retailer here who helped a lot of women find their confidence with this tuck.

it doesn’t work for everyone. However for some it elongates the leg and pulls in at the waist giving shape.

i do it and if i didn’t I’d look like a teletubbie.

live and let live (tuck)

I’m not really upset, there’s no need to worry about me. I just don’t understand it.

In what way does it make someone look less fat?

It just looks very wrong and unbalanced to me.

I’m a size 8 26inch waist with a bloody huge natural breast size but a tiny back (back is a 28 cup is a G) so I have to French tuck as it accentuates my waist because whilst my proportions are small my large bust can hid my waist. Plus my hips are small 32. My small back
gives the illusion that my bust is smaller. I guess it’s a tool that you don’t have to use but for girls who are hourglass or rectangle it’s pretty useful.

Because of my proportions I actually suit clothes being tucked all the way round too.

UpMyself · 29/09/2025 11:10

When I've seen it IRL, it looks messy. It's usually worn by women without a defined waist, and it accentuates it.

If someone wants to do it, then it's up to them. I can see it might work if you have a large bust.

I don't care if wide legged trousers and jeans are trendy. I don't like the look, and I'll be wearing boots soon. My skinny jeans tuck into them.

PuppyMonkey · 29/09/2025 12:24

Oh, I thought this thread had died. Thanks for the latecomers who agree with me and /or at least don’t think I’m out of order for even daring to start a thread on this in the S&B board. The rest of you who love a tuck, please carry on if you want to but you haven’t convinced me.

To PP who asked how I’d wear a long shirt, I’d just have it loose all round. And if my waist was so amazing that I needed to show it off at all times, I’d just choose another top or a dress or something that does that.Confused

I do it on 90% of my jumpers and tops and it improves the overall look. I'm quite short with slightly longer legs so it helps me to look less short/dumpy and draws more attention to lengthen my legs.

It also looks far more 'done' than letting jumpers and tops drown me as they'd go down to below my crotch if not done and I'd look about 3ft tall. It also adds a bit of clothing volume above where I carry weight, so makes that look more blended in and (again) gives me a more flattering shape by elongating my legs.

if you don't like, don't do it.

HouseHangover · 29/09/2025 13:57

Thistlewoman · 28/09/2025 23:25

She really doesn't look fashionable right now.
And don't even get me going on skinny jeans 🤣

Skinny jeans have been making a return!

.... though I haven't dusted mine off yet, as I was rather happy to store them away for a decade or so!

YourWinter · 29/09/2025 14:11

Why do you care?

AutumnCosy2025 · 29/09/2025 14:28

If I had her height/figure I'd just wear a bikini EVERYWHERE.

Love her shirt & she looks FABULOUS!!

I’m really hoping the skinnies make a big return this winter, they have been tentatively making a return for the last couple of years but it doesn’t seem to be quite happening…..they are the only jeans style that really suit my figure!

ThatCyanCat · 29/09/2025 14:53

That's so unfair. We had skinniest for over ten sodding years, was it even 15? And now we can't get even a flash of the wide legs that are so much nicer?

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 29/09/2025 14:55

Oh get over yourself.
It's called a French Tuck.. French people have been doing it for years. It's called fashion.. and it looks lovely and classy. If you don't like it .. don't do it.

Divebar2021 · 29/09/2025 15:03

Oh I like it and various variations - mainly because I like a mannish shirt but some of mine are a wee bit too big now. I like a bit of friction or asymmetry in my outfits and I use a range of ways to incorporate that. Most people I see out and about look like they’ve taken about 5 seconds to plan their outfits so if they don’t get it that’s fine - vive la difference!

UpMyself · 29/09/2025 15:07

@ThatCyanCat , I've been around long enough to see the wide legs come and go a few times. I don't think they look good on anyone.

The french tuck might look good on those who manage to look effortlessly cool anyway. I don't believe the hype about French people looking stylish and elegant, only some of them do.

dumberthanaboxofrocks · 29/09/2025 15:09

I look like a bag of washing if I don’t tuck something in somewhere so I’m all about it.

UpMyself · 29/09/2025 15:11

I spend at least 5 seconds planning an outfit (as in clean bra, knickers, socks, t-shirt). I don't make an effort to look effortlessly stylish.

Maddy70 · 29/09/2025 15:41

I like it :)

PuppyMonkey · 29/09/2025 16:22

I’m guessing this isn’t the thread to mention I hate wide leg trousers too. Grin

I kind of agree with this, they can meals a lot of people look frumpy / dumpy and heavier than they actually are

I've seen them a couple of times too and I love them 🙂

The thing with fashion is that we all think we are the arbiters of good taste and timeless style as opposed to passing fads. And yet we never all agree on what that is and we all have photos where we laugh our heads off and can't believe we used to wear that. Even the professional fashionistas paid to create iconic styles for famous people or film and TV costumes fuck up all the time.

That's life's rich tapestry. However, we should remember that with perhaps the odd egregiously offensive exception, clothing really isn't a moral issue.

UpMyself · 29/09/2025 17:00

@ThatCyanCat , I don't think I'm an arbiter of good taste. My taste is a mix of traditional, practical and WTF.
I tend to love the oddball fashion items, but not the ones that catch on.

TreacleMoon · 29/09/2025 17:01

If I still had a waist, I'd be doing this..

(Four daughters on, post menopausal and enjoying all of the Autumnal baked goods, probably a little too much.. 😉)

I forgot to add, we also all have highly individualised and unique styles too 🙃
