When will people stop tucking their tops in at the front of jeans etc

I thought this would be one of those things that wouldn’t last long because people would realise how stupid it looks, but it showing no signs of stopping. Like the woman in this photo. I can’t be the only one who thinks this half tucking thing looks really, really silly. Can I?

Is it really bad that I only found out that it was called a french tuck this year....I'm 45. I found out about it being a deliberate thing when I was looking up websites on capsule wardrobes and putting together outfits etc (I was looking up some ideas for new clothing styles for me). I quite like it but don't do it on my own outfits.

WantingMoreCareer · 28/09/2025 21:34

An absolute must for me to put my body into some kind of hourglass shape or else everything just hangs off my boobs and looks very matronly (I’m a size 10/12 - boobs make everything look massive if I don’t do a tuck to show a bit of contrast between top and bottom half). I love a belt for the same reason. And I like to show my belt so tuck useful here too.

ResultsMayVary · 28/09/2025 21:41

@PuppyMonkey How would you prefer it was worn?

Each to their own - I think it looks really silly and very unoriginal.it's such an over done look.

So what’s less ‘done’ and more ‘original’? Full tuck and untucked are hardly revolutionary 🤣 maybe you do something truly unique and never seen before with your shirts. Triple twist over the neck perhaps?

bumbaloo · 28/09/2025 21:45

Literally just saw Eva Longoria on BBC1 just now and she had the tucked in top. Looks naff, even on her.

On the other hand, saw a lady on tv a few days back, silk shirt tucked into her jeans all the way round and it stood out, casual, smart and not a sheep.

So the woman wearing a shirt tucked all the way in like millions of people wear it was not being a sheep? 🫤

Bernardo1 · 28/09/2025 21:51

It won't last long because it's clear how stupid you are!

Why should they ?

Their choice, and they may be more comfortable, even stylish.than you realise.

BiTheBridge · 27/09/2025 08:58

I do it and I’m not going to stop. It doesn’t look silly. I don’t want to tuck a big jumper in all the way around like I’m five years old 🤣.

But tucking slightly at the front (I believe it’s called a French tuck) adds a bit of shape/drape to the lines of my outfit and allows for easier pocket access.

I do hear it’s not fashionable anymore and very “millennial” but luckily I don’t care about that.

It looks ridiculous, sorry to say this, but it's true

RandomUsernameHere · 27/09/2025 08:59

She looks good.

In your view.
But it's not fashionable, just like the old flowery dress, denim jacket, trainers combo is sooo over.
No one is forcing anyone not to wear it, but just don't expect to be seen as fashionable if you do🤷🏼‍♀️

Exactly this.
It looks so dated! It's a lot like the old 'flowery dress/denim jacket/trainers' combo.
No-one is being forced to stop wearing it, but those who do need to understand that they are marking themselves out as well past fashion forward!

See to me, it doesn’t draw attention to the slim waist, it draws attention to the tummy/crotch area. Even on that lovely model in my pic, I just think it looks awful showing off the crotch of her jeans.

Spot on.
Too many of those clinging on to this look have no idea it only looks passably acceptable on size 4 women who have long, slim legs and are at least 5' 10" tall!!

Cherryicecreamx · 28/09/2025 22:06

Oops guilty. I quite like it, it tends to give my body a bit of shape! It can look and feel a bit formal to me to have it all tucked in.. and then messy to have it untucked! Thought it was a happy medium 😅

Miniaturemom · 28/09/2025 22:11

It is THE way that those of us who are very short improve their proportions, as explained perfectly in Chi’s petite dressing YouTube channel.

CakeIsNotAvailable · 28/09/2025 22:13

I either fully tuck, or don't tuck at all. I don't see much French tucking around these parts - in part because loose/baggy silhouettes seem to be more popular now, or cropped/short tops. I didn't French tuck even when it was "in", because it didn't suit me - I'm not very elegant and it never looked intentional.

Thistlewoman · 28/09/2025 22:13

OldAndUngraceful · 27/09/2025 09:25

I don't see the problem. The woman in the photo looks great. A full tuck can look extremely weird, specially on short torsos like mine. No tuck at all can look shapeless and sloppy. A French tuck is a really good option because it creates balance.

You think she looks great🤷🏼‍♀️
Meh.
But she doesn't look fashionable. Fine if that doesn't bother you. But that's the reality.
And tbh lots of women wear this look who really should think twice-because it draws the eye to a fat belly, a fat crotch, a camel toe and/or a thick waist.
That's all fine if you wear this and want people to look at that area and any/all of its less than perfect aesthetics.
The woman in the photo looks ok, circa 2015 max.

Lemonflavouredcaterpillars · 28/09/2025 22:28

Haven’t read the replies but, in answer to your original question, never. You will be prising my beloved millennial tuck from my cold dead hands.

NatDontBeATwat · 28/09/2025 22:35

Woman in photo is rocking that style. It’s a look that suits some people but not others.

She does look fashionable. That's the fashion right now. That's why so many people on the thread have seen this fashion lately or do it themselves. You might not like the fashion but it absolutely is the fashion.

She doesn't look 2015 at all. The hideous skinny jeans were still everywhere back then.

whattheysay · 28/09/2025 23:05

Do you look at tucked in tops or cropped tops and only see crotches? A bit strange.
But I would wear a shirt or jumper like this as I’m quite slim with a smaller waist but if I wore an untucked shirt it would hang down from my not so small boobs like a massive tent which is far more unflattering

BeardofHagrid · 28/09/2025 23:08

I’m never going to stop! I look seriously overweight with anything baggy over my stomach. I need to tuck to create a waist. It’s not about a trend.

She really doesn't look fashionable right now.
And don't even get me going on skinny jeans 🤣

Simplox · 28/09/2025 23:33

Now that skinny jeans are 'out' and wider-leg styles are 'in,' I think there's a corresponding shift in the shape of tops and/or ways of wearing them.

Longish, loose, undefined tops might work with skinnies, but they're going to look shit on most people if they're worn untucked with wider-leg jeans. It's just a great big flappy tent look with no shape. Tucking/belting can alleviate that. Or else I see a lot of shorter tops around which make the waistline more visible.

I'm not fashionable enough to really know what's going on, but I'm watching with considerable interest.

Charredtea · 28/09/2025 23:34

It’s been around for decades. I do it sometimes because I’m very short and I can’t always afford petite clothes and am too old for cropped.
also petite ranges aren’t always what they’re cracked up to be so to avoid looking swamped I’ll do a half arsed tuck.

Lilywc · 28/09/2025 23:35

There’s more important things to worry about

alfonzi · 28/09/2025 23:39

I think it looks good and actually I’ve never really noticed it before, but I shall try it from now on seeing as I’m quite top heavy and short!
