When will people stop tucking their tops in at the front of jeans etc

I thought this would be one of those things that wouldn’t last long because people would realise how stupid it looks, but it showing no signs of stopping. Like the woman in this photo. I can’t be the only one who thinks this half tucking thing looks really, really silly. Can I?

Mine is bag lady. Smile

Who thinks they’re unique? I don’t think I’m unique or classic or chic or an arbiter of good taste. I think “ good taste” is deathly dull. I think I’m “ on trend” in some ways but I’m aiming for interesting looking rather than trendy. What is definitely not on trend is banging on about “ flattering” like it’s an aesthetic.

I’m not really upset, there’s no need to worry about me. I just don’t understand it.

In what way does it make someone look less fat?

It just looks very wrong and unbalanced to me.

I like it but have no thoughts on someone wearing it the other way - and definitely wouldn't raise it in a forum?

But you’re okay to contribute to the thread where I’ve raised it, I see. Grin

The thread gave me lots of laughs. Thanks, OP.

SleepyLemur · 30/09/2025 12:38

I also think it can look nice if done well. I don't do it myself as I have no tucking skills, so couldn't pull it off!

Cringey emoji but I get your point x

floppybit · 30/09/2025 15:03

I’m a fatty and I do a kind of off centre tuck because it’s quite flattering on the old menopausal belly- I won’t be stopping!

You have no tucking skills?!……all you have to do is tuck your top inside your trousers/ skirt ( not too tightly, leave a bit of overhang) ……I didn’t realise some people found this difficult to do

UpMyself · 30/09/2025 17:04

@Everyonceinawhile , it's not the tucking that's difficult, it's doing it so that the effect is pleasing to the eye.

Still not difficult, you just need to stand in front of a mirror and try it a few times 🤷‍♀️

UpMyself · 30/09/2025 17:30

I've no intention of tucking in part of my top

I’m genuinely baffled about how this looks better than a top left hanging loose to actually cover your belly.Confused

The looseness and billowing there can add volume.

Try it, it’s definitely more flattering and youthful looking, the proportions ( leg to torso) are also a lot better

PuppyMonkey · 30/09/2025 18:18

Try it? Have you not read the thread? Grin

Yet to see anyone who looks better proportioned doing this but I acknowledge I’m in the minority on this and you lot will just have to come to the realisation you’re all wrong in your own sweet time.

It really is all about the leg to torso ratio 😁

PuppyMonkey · 30/09/2025 18:24

It really isn’t.

As always, it depends on the style of the clothing and the shape of the person. Tucking is less likely to work on an apple shape with a big tummy, but if you're an hourglass or pear with a waist, a semi tuck can show your waist without bringing all the attention to the boobs and hips.

IsthatyouKateAdie · 30/09/2025 18:51

I'm 58. tall and athletic- looking with broad shoulders, quite trim waist & longish legs. I used to associate the tuck with yummy mummies (which I'm definitely not) almost as the signifier of a club I couldn't join. Then I tried it surreptitiously and found it actually was flattering. I've invested in some 501s and a couple of belts with really good buckles and the tuck gives that focal point without feeling constrained all round (I do tuck shirts in properly, this is for jumpers). It's a look that gives me confidence and I feel.more put together. DH however seemed to think it was something eccentric of my own invention and didn't subscribe. He has more recently discovered that it is actually a thing, and has conceded that it's a valid choice not a failing.
I'm past the life stage of worrying whether I'm on trend, and I live in an area where more people wear milking overalls than skinny jeans. Now I've carried the French Tuck point at home I'm not about to give it up, and can only hope that if people think I'm unoriginal or overdone they'll be nice enough to keep that to themselves.

You have to do it so it looks neat. When I do it, it looks like I forgot to tuck in the back. Others can pull it off. Maybe I'm not doing it with the corrects shirts ect. I don't really care, was just reporting my experience.

pambeesleyhalpert · 30/09/2025 19:31

I like it! Looks better than untucked!

lilkitten · 01/10/2025 12:34

I only discovered this last year. I like it. I'm quite skinny, I tuck it so the tops look less baggy and more defined on the waist. My kids said I'd got cooler 😂

Because very often just covering areas does not equate flattering. Just makes you look bigger
