When will people stop tucking their tops in at the front of jeans etc

I thought this would be one of those things that wouldn’t last long because people would realise how stupid it looks, but it showing no signs of stopping. Like the woman in this photo. I can’t be the only one who thinks this half tucking thing looks really, really silly. Can I?

When:

  • they move to a warmer place
  • the autumn has gone
  • the winter has gone
  • they stop liking it
  • they have repaired the buttons of the bottom of their shirt
  • they finally admit it is too small/ too large

She looks lovely

See to me, it doesn’t draw attention to the slim waist, it draws attention to the tummy/crotch area. Even on that lovely model in my pic, I just think it looks awful showing off the crotch of her jeans.

I agree. Whenever I see people with this half-tuck look I think it nearly always makes someone look bigger than they are around the tummy. Denim is a bulky material, and so jeans with a shirt tucked in at the front make most people look like they have more of a belly than they actually do.

And what’s with all the joyless posts on this thread saying this is a ridiculous thing to post about, and how frivolous anyone is to have an opinion on this?! Personally I really enjoy having a brain that can think about a huge variety of things, often all at once. And if I choose to spend 1% of my brain power and 2 mins of my day thinking about how shirts look tucked into jeans, I’m very comfortable with that.

Algen · 28/09/2025 18:31

The only place I wish they’d stop doing it is on websites where they’re trying to sell the top in question. I don’t wear my tops like that and want to see the length of the top. But half the time there isn’t an “untucked” photo.

Other than that, I don’t care. It doesn’t suit me, but if people think it fits with their style then go for it.

TheAlcott · 28/09/2025 18:32

I French tuck frequently. I've lost weight and have a waist again - damn right I'm showing it off! T-shirts, shirts, thin jumpers - they all get a little half-tuck. I couldn't care less what anyone else thinks; I think I look better that way.

Although that picture is quite an extreme tuck imo (and those jeans are vile).

Homewardbanned · 28/09/2025 18:34

I like it on other people but it’s ridiculous on me. I realised recently that all my jeans and trousers are high waisted now. I’m pretty slim but they emphasise my stomach and make me look like Simon cowell. So I’ve just ordered some low cut jeans from Levi to see if they look better

vinylvibes · 28/09/2025 18:37

I do it and it looks better. It gives more shape and I have a flat stomach so don't need to be hiding it underneath a baggy shirt.

Dogladycrazy · 28/09/2025 18:42

I like it and will carry on doing it, I think it just gives a bit of waist definition, lengthen legs and also stops jumpers etc falling to an unflattering hip level. It’s maybe down to body shapes but I think it suits me and I don’t find it a faff at all.

I do it and I’m not going to stop. It doesn’t look silly. I don’t want to tuck a big jumper in all the way around like I’m five years old 🤣.

But tucking slightly at the front (I believe it’s called a French tuck) adds a bit of shape/drape to the lines of my outfit and allows for easier pocket access.

I do hear it’s not fashionable anymore and very “millennial” but luckily I don’t care about that.

I think it looks chic

MoonWoman69 · 28/09/2025 19:02

I'm with you OP! My friend has recently started doing this and I think it looks ridiculous! She looks half dressed to me and she is not slim by any means. It's just my opinion, but all those saying it makes people look slimmer, I think that's quite deluded! Unless you have a totally flat stomach, all the French Tuck style does is draw attention to that area! You may as well wear a crop top and have done with it, it gives no "shape" at all to my mind!
I have lost a huge amount of weight in the last 12 years, (8 stones) (by steadily and slowly, just by reducing snacks and portion sizes). I can now wear much shorter, more fitted tops than I used to, but they still cover my stomach. Which I think looks more slimming and stylish than that tuck!

knor · 28/09/2025 19:31

Awww op I think it looks cute!!!
I don’t have a problem with it but don’t do it myself

Pliudev · 28/09/2025 19:43

I'm more puzzled by the long history of the distressed or ripped jeans. I don't care but I don't understand it.

Well, it's grunge/punk. It's supposed to look faded, well used, alternative, very much not neat and pressed and office-like. It's an aesthetic.

UpMyself · 28/09/2025 19:49

@Pliudev , it was fashionable in the late 1980s. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now.

Carpedimum · 28/09/2025 19:54

I like it; I do it. I’ve got a good figure and I like to show my waist in most outfits because I’m short and can look like a blob otherwise. I like belts as an accessory too, rather than just functional. A contrast colour or design can elevate an outfit.

TheChosenTwo · 28/09/2025 20:04

I don’t like it so i don’t do it, I think it mostly looks a bit silly. If I’m tucking something in I tuck it all the way around.

ThatCyanCat · 28/09/2025 20:14

My God, that's a tuck I'd climb like a tree.

Literally just saw Eva Longoria on BBC1 just now and she had the tucked in top. Looks naff, even on her.

On the other hand, saw a lady on tv a few days back, silk shirt tucked into her jeans all the way round and it stood out, casual, smart and not a sheep.

Tuesdayschild50 · 28/09/2025 20:43

This looks really nice actually.

fuckhimintheear · 28/09/2025 20:47

It looks much better than letting your shirt or jumper hang off your boobs like a sack. French tuck all the way for me. It feels so much more put together than just letting fabric/knitwear just ‘hang’ like a shapeless mess.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 28/09/2025 21:01

PuppyMonkey · 27/09/2025 09:09

I’m not really upset, there’s no need to worry about me. I just don’t understand it.

In what way does it make someone look less fat?

It just looks very wrong and unbalanced to me.

Don't do it then.

PeachyPeachTrees · 28/09/2025 21:02

I think it looks good, unless it's a really long oversized shirt.

CharlieKirkRIP · 28/09/2025 21:03

I agree with you op, it looks awful.

AramintaWildbloode · 28/09/2025 21:06

I humph each time I see this.
Have only seen it on telly though, never irl.
Mind you I live in a world of 50/50 OAPs and horsey women so maybe not that representative of fashion in general.
