When will people stop tucking their tops in at the front of jeans etc

I thought this would be one of those things that wouldn’t last long because people would realise how stupid it looks, but it showing no signs of stopping. Like the woman in this photo. I can’t be the only one who thinks this half tucking thing looks really, really silly. Can I?

We also did it in the 80s. Plus using belts to shape baggy shirts

Imagine seeing someone wearing clothes and thinking, that’s overdone, unoriginal and/or unbalanced. And that person is just walking down the street, happily living their life?

I’m glad I don’t have a brain that is afflicted by thoughts like this.

Absolutely

I do it, depending on the length of the top- I never thought of it as a fashion thing, just one of the many different ways to wear clothes. My teenage daughters sometimes do it too, so I don’t think it’s an age thing.

TheOGCCL · 27/09/2025 09:19

Funnily enough the current trend is no tucking. Tucks have given a bit of balance to wider trousers for the last few years but it’s actually fashionable at the moment to wear loose trousers and a loose top (the natural outcome of all these co-ords), or a cropped-ish top so no need for tucking.

But it’ll persist like skinny jeans because the waist is often the narrowest part of the body and tucking creates shape and balance, it usually lengthens the leg as well. I do it to stop tops tenting off my large bust.

I’m not really upset, there’s no need to worry about me. I just don’t understand it.

In what way does it make someone look less fat?

It just looks very wrong and unbalanced to me.

It makes people look ‘less fat’ in the same way saying ‘look slimmer’ would make you sound less bitchy and mean.

myheadsjustmush · 27/09/2025 09:19

Well, I think it looks much better than the young males who walk around with the crotch of their jeans at knee level, and most of their butt / underpants hanging out......

PuppyMonkey · 27/09/2025 09:22

My brain is pretty weird, I’ll give you that. Grin

It’s been a “thing” for as long as I can remember, but it comes and goes. It works well with certain tops.
However, it’s not obligatory if you don’t like it.

PuppyMonkey · 27/09/2025 09:25

I was responding to PP who said it made her look less fat btw.

I don't see the problem. The woman in the photo looks great. A full tuck can look extremely weird, specially on short torsos like mine. No tuck at all can look shapeless and sloppy. A French tuck is a really good option because it creates balance.

It draws the eye to your slimmest point, which is generally your waist. In your example op, the woman would look very blocky and shapeless if the shirt was left untucked. And that shirt is too bulky to tuck in all the way round.

CafeDuck · 27/09/2025 09:26

It’s more flattering than untucked but I can’t ever get it right

Willow12345 · 27/09/2025 09:26

I do this.
I think a white shirt loosely tucked into jeans at the front, looks sexy.

FirstCuppa · 27/09/2025 09:26

Isn't it called the French Tuck?
It's often slimming and can stop the button pressing in, I find!
Why do you need to dictate how other people wear clothes?

InterestPiqued · 27/09/2025 09:27

I think it can look good, not on me though. It makes me look fat and I’m not.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 27/09/2025 09:29

I do it every day at work.
i still have a waist so it’s nice to show that a bit.
if a shirt falls to mid hip it emphasises my widest part.
its warmer than having my shirt loose.
if i tucked in all the way round it would be a faff, and too much fabric round my waist.

spoonbillstretford · 27/09/2025 09:29

I tuck my top into jeans if it's a long thin top that needs tucking in.

After losing two stone and having a much smaller waist again I absolutely love not covering up my middle!

Cinaferna · 27/09/2025 09:30

I've never done it - especially not the half-tuck where you tuck one side of the front of your shirt in and leave the other dangling. On a friend of mine it looks very chic. On me it looks like I left the toilet in a hurry. I have given up believing the stylists who say tucking in around the waist makes you look slimmer, whatever your shape and size. It doesn't. So I don't.

Indeed. The shirt would look awful without the tuck. She looks amazing.

ThatCyanCat · 27/09/2025 09:32

When will people stop doing it? Probably once the fashion goes from high rise trousers to low. You almost have to tuck when they're high rise, otherwise a) what's the point of high rise if you can't see it and b) it can be unflattering to have the waistband material bulking out your top. However, the tucked in all over can look a bit wrong, depending on the top, so doing it at the front keeps your shape (especially for hourglasses and pears) but also allows a bit of billow and looks more casual than in a over.

I can cope with high rise trousers better than 50000 years of fucking skinnies. God, I thought it would never end.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 27/09/2025 09:33

I think it depends. I was watching a YouTube video where a lady explained how to dress over 60, and she was saying that the French Tuck gives you a 'silhouette' and a bit more shape. It looks great on some people.

On me it looks like I pulled my trousers up too fast after a wee and everything got caught. But I CANNOT look stylish whatever I do, I look like everything is accidental and I got dressed in a hurricane. So I'm settling for looking clean and tidy and this is as good as it gets.

I'd love to look stylish and be able to do a French Tuck.

zaxxon · 27/09/2025 09:33

If the woman in that photo looks "bad" to the MN hive mind, then what hope is there for the rest of us 😭

PuppyMonkey · 27/09/2025 09:34

See to me, it doesn’t draw attention to the slim waist, it draws attention to the tummy/crotch area. Even on that lovely model in my pic, I just think it looks awful showing off the crotch of her jeans.
