When will people stop tucking their tops in at the front of jeans etc

I thought this would be one of those things that wouldn’t last long because people would realise how stupid it looks, but it showing no signs of stopping. Like the woman in this photo. I can’t be the only one who thinks this half tucking thing looks really, really silly. Can I?

I think it looks like you’ve been to the loo and got the front of your top caught in your trousers by mistake 😆

It’s a French tuck isn’t it? It’s been around for a long time, it might go back out of fashion but I remember people doing it back in the 80s so bcwill never vanish. practically it’s so you don’t get holes in tops from leaning against jeans button.

I am so glad you wrote this as I’ve actually stopped buying expensive tops because of precisely this problem.

I have started tucking in tops, but only when going out as a specific look because I like it.

Hadn’t occurred to me this would save my tops

Wait till you see the one leg jean boot tuck that is apparently in this season 🙄

I saw someone dressed like that yesterday but assumed it was some sort of wardrobe malfunction (it was short ugg type boots and the tucking was loose rather than pushed right down).

RestlessSparrow · 27/09/2025 13:26

I think you need broader shoulders and/or and longer body than me for this to work and a flat stomach. I still have a waist at the back and sides, all my mum-tum is at the front and any tucking, belts etc at the front makes me look about 4 months pregnant, while the untucked bits hide where I do have a waist!

Is there such a thing as a "reverse French tuck"? I might try it and start an instagram account, but I don't know if the name would attract the wrong audience....

chanbhs · 27/09/2025 13:35

The tuck in the pic is not right. I don’t see/know anyone who would tuck the whole front in and leave a train at the back.

The millennial French tuck is more common, but this is being replaced with strategic buttoning of shirts, bringing them up to belt line. Tops tend to be shorter now too so no need for the tuck.

(Talking about x/millennials not youngsters)

jonthebatiste · 27/09/2025 14:08

I can always tell when my DS has been to the loo because he comes out with a perfect French tuck…except his top is always tucked into his underpants as well as his shirts/trousers Grin

There’s a teacher at said DS’s school who does a left- or right-only French tuck. It’s soooo weird. She wears wide legged jeans and an immaculately ironed shirt (looks like a boyfriend shirt) that she buttons up only the middle of. 3/4 of the circumference of the shirt bottom hangs out of the jeans, one quarter (left or right) is tucked in. She also pops the collar and wears a Juste Un Clou-style necklace. And sandals/birkenstocks. It’s SUCH an odd look. I can’t works out the thought process at all.

I'm more concerned about when people like @OP will realise people have different tastes and stop being so controlling of other people's choices. You don't like it, don't do it.

ExcellentDesigns · 27/09/2025 14:17

She is not controlling of other people's tastes, just observing and commenting on a style, which is perfectly reasonable. The point of the board is to discuss style and beauty and it's ok not to like something.

Poirot1983 · 27/09/2025 14:28

A Bill is being passed in Parliament to stop this.

PuppyMonkey · 27/09/2025 14:37

Goodness imagine sitting thinking about this, starting a thread and finding a photo. It’s so weird I have even clicked and read,

i know, right? Grin

Discussing - as in “I don’t like this” is one thing but “ when will it stop” is something else / very negative about something that really doesn’t impact anything other than your internal sense of style - the original post was too dictatorial in tone hence people being a bit shirty

all that for a pun

Nitgel · 27/09/2025 09:15

We also did it in the 80s. Plus using belts to shape baggy shirts

We did and I have no inclination to do it again 😂

Coconutter24 · 27/09/2025 14:45

PuppyMonkey · 27/09/2025 09:25

I was responding to PP who said it made her look less fat btw.

I agree with their comment. I sometimes do this if I have a baggy shirt or top. If it’s baggy you don’t see my figure underneath it but if you tuck a bit of the front in then you can my shape

PuppyMonkey · 27/09/2025 14:50

A bit shirty.

Nice one! Grin

I must be so behind the times. I did this for the very first time this week after buying a jumper in Vinted that was that that bit too oversized and I thought ‘oh I know, I could try that new tuck in at the front’ 🤣🤣

Clearly I’ve missed the memo that it’s been and gone, but it made the jumper wearable and I felt ‘modern’ and stylish for following fashion. 😂😂

But clearly people like you were judging me harshly for it…!

😂 this is me. I’ve been considering joining in this new French tuck trend.

CafeDuck · 27/09/2025 09:26

It’s more flattering than untucked but I can’t ever get it right

Haha - I was just thinking that I never get the right amount of ‘tuck’ in the places to make it look effortless and not contrived (and flattering). I don’t even bother to try these days. If my clothes are clean, I’m winning.

OhDear111 · 27/09/2025 17:11

@ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets Just half of the front. Not at the back and not all the front. The pic is ok but quite a lot of tuck.

UpMyself · 27/09/2025 17:32

I think it looks messy.

TartanTwit · 27/09/2025 17:34

it makes me look like a jacket potato!

UpMyself · 27/09/2025 17:41

I remember in the 1980s my nan saying it looked like a man who hadn't tucked his shirt in after going to the loo.

DramaAlpaca · 27/09/2025 17:49

I'm not a fan; it just makes me look untidy.

OhDear111 · 27/09/2025 21:14

Tucked in fully is a work look. The partial tuck is the off duty look.

wintersgold · 27/09/2025 21:23

I think it looks much more elegant.

Jumpingthruhoops · 28/09/2025 17:53

Not at all. I do it now and my outfits look so much more 'put together' as a result.

You're allowed to not like it, of course, but hopefully those doing it don't care what you (and others!) think. 🤷‍♀️

Blanknotebook · 28/09/2025 18:07

My friend did this and I didn’t realise it was a fashion thing! I was helpfully tucking her in before she went through the front door, only to learn about the ‘half tuck!’ We are both retired ladies, but she is far more fashionable than me.
