Need some advice on my daughter’s prom dress options

My daughter is attending her Year 13 prom in June so we are looking for her prom dress at the moment. She initially wanted to wear a black gown, but her best friend has got her prom dress in black so she will have to choose a different colour. After some lengthy discussion and online shopping, we have finally narrowed it down to two gowns. Both of them are lovely, but they offer very different vibes which we couldn’t decide on.

She is blonde, 5’6 and petite. Which dress do you think we should go for? It’s an once in a life time experience, so I would like her to feel confident, empowered and make some lovely memory in it.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

They look more like what some celebrities would wear to film premiere, and a bit too revealing, but then I am old!

DonningMyHardHat · 12/02/2025 15:03

What kind of event is it? Prom could mean anything from a disco in the school hall, to a sit down dinner in a luxury hotel.

That's exactly what I thought. Literally.

Candleabra · 12/02/2025 15:06

I don’t like them personally but they align with what pretty much every teenager wears to a prom so I’m sure they’re fine.
(I’m not sure mumsnet is the right place to canvas opinions on teenage clothing tbh)

HippyKayYay · 12/02/2025 15:07

I don’t love either of them, but I really dislike the pink bow one! But I’m not a 18-yr-old girl. Surely your DD is better off asking her friends/ peers rather than a bunch of (probably) middle-aged women on MN

Also why can’t she wear black too? They’ll likely be loads of them in black frocks (for good reason) - it’s not like 2 people turning up in exactly the same shade of eg lemon yellow

MrsCrabOrange · 12/02/2025 15:07

I'd go for the blue but get it altered so the slit is less high. I'm speaking from experience she won't want to be worrying her bits are on show.

OldChairMan · 12/02/2025 15:07

"Advice"? Surely she can choose herself? Or ask her friends' opinions?

ChonkyRabbit · 12/02/2025 15:08

They both look cheap and nasty.

Christwosheds · 12/02/2025 15:08

I really dislike the blue one, that colour suits almost nobody, and I have a thing about thigh high leg splits.
The pink is a much nicer shape, not mad on the colour though. What colouring is your dd ? If she wanted black then maybe she actually wants something more classic and elegant ? There will be other girls in black so I don’t think she needs to choose a different colour if that is her first choice.

RuthW · 12/02/2025 15:10

Both yuk. Choose something classy she will wear again.

My dd wore a short one to yr 13 prom as the had done the long one in yr 11.

Allthebrokenplaces · 12/02/2025 15:10

I'd go for black if that is what she wants - maybe not the same dress as her friend though.
Of those, I prefer the pink.

Pinkpillow7 · 12/02/2025 15:11

I don’t want to be prudish but that blue one is soo revealing, in a tacky sort of way. That leg slit couldn’t be any higher. Out of those two I would go for the pink one for that reason. I agree with a PP that they both look cheap though (and they’re not!) I think your dd can do better

Have to agree with this.

Unless she gets exactly the same dress as her friend, she can wear black...nobody gets to calls dibs on a colour

Onlyonekenobe · 12/02/2025 15:11

I think it's a bit of a stretch to call these "gowns". They're very flimsy, really just glorified pieces of synthetic fabric sewn together not very sturdily. Both are revealing, but revealing is what young girls often go in for.

I can only tell you I wouldn't allow either for my DD. On that basis they're both as good/bad as each other really. Not much to choose from.

ProustianMadeleine · 12/02/2025 15:12

God, you lot are ridiculous and overly bitchy sometimes. It's just a teenage girl wanting to look like a supermodel for her prom. She probably wants to feel like she's going to a premiere, whoever made that stupid comment! 🙄
I like the pink OP. I hope she has an amazing time whichever dress she chooses.

AsFunAsEnglishWeather · 12/02/2025 15:12

They are both exactly what teens wear to prom. Don't let her wear black - it's boring. I dislike the blue as it's cut weirdly and pulls open to show too much leg - think the Angelina Jolie leg meme. The pink is much better.

Eh? OP asked for opinions, there are much better dresses out there than those pictured...but it all depends on budget.

mewkins · 12/02/2025 15:14

Both hang weirdly around the stomach area. The blue one is sort of ruched at the sides (a bit like a maternity skirt) and then really emphasises the belly button oddly.

The pink one has a weird lining under the top which you can see and it's a weird shape.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 12/02/2025 15:17

Big bows are very "in" at the minute. Not that I'm wearing them but I seem to be seeing them on every single teenage girl I see!! Id be scared of spilling food or drink on the pale pink one 😂! But in terms of how revealing it was, I wore stuff like that when I was 18 and had the body for it!

Hayley1256 · 12/02/2025 15:21

Could she go for a dark navy blue instead?

Purplecatshopaholic · 12/02/2025 15:23

As she’s blonde I think she will look stunning in the pink. It’s the nicer dress too. I hope she has a fabulous time whatever she wears.

Pineapplewaves · 12/02/2025 15:24

Why does she have to choose a different colour from her best friend? The best friend won't be the only girl wearing a black dress. Your DD should wear what she wants to wear, the friend doesn't own black.

Hazeby · 12/02/2025 15:27

Bet you’re glad you asked, eh OP?

Ignore the mean comments. I like the blue one as I would worry the pink will show up the tiniest stain or mark. But they are both lovely.

I also agree she can still wear black if she found a black one she loves.

Pineapplewaves · 12/02/2025 15:31

The blue is a beautiful colour but the split is too high.

The pink is lovely but you'd have to be very careful she doesn’t get a mark on it before she leaves the house!

The pink Quiz dress is lovely too and a much more acceptable the split.

The navy blue and bottle green are winter colours and would suit an older woman.
