Who still wears heels?

Saw a woman in heels at lunchtime, in the queue for sandwiches, and just thought, can't remember the last time I saw someone in heels at work. To be fair I work in Government and we are a fairly scruffy bunch. But even on a night out it mostly seems to be trainers or flats.

I wear them for work sometimes. Sometimes on a night out.
I saw a lady tottering into Aldi yesterday in sky high stilettos and it made me do a double take though, so they're definitely not around as much as they were. She looked in agony 😂

spartanrunnergirl · 04/03/2024 16:23

Pretty rare to see stiletto heels these days. I never wear them, and when I see others in them I think they look pretty old fashioned now. I saw a woman with sky high stilettos on when I visited a car dealer the other day and it just looked ridiculous, her standing there on tiptoes with all the other staff (male) in flat normal shoes.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 04/03/2024 16:25

I wear heeled boots fairly regularly, but not like a heeled pump/court shoe. I have some heels I wear to weddings or smart events, because I do like them and have always found heels easy to wear, but I think they'd look out of place most of the time.

TheLeadbetterLife · 04/03/2024 16:28

Most of the women on The Apprentice aren't even wearing them this year. It is truly the end of the heel.

kitsuneghost · 04/03/2024 16:30

The only people I see with them are orange with fillers, turkey teeth and a facelift ponytail.

Flockameanie · 04/03/2024 16:31

Not me. I threw all mine out in a big post-lockdown clear out. So liberating.

PurplePim · 04/03/2024 16:35

I went to a posh ball recently and it was surreal seeing women in heels. I so rarely see them on a daily basis now. Many people (myself included) seem to have lost a little of their practised elegance when walking in them though, and there were a lot of flats that came out for dancing.

I'd love to see the end of them altogether. At a theoretical and practical level they're absurd. They only have aesthetics going for them, and I'm sure a norm shift over time could see the end of that. If manufacturers invested in designing more beautiful flats rather than shelves of heels that sit languishing on sale shelves and then in cupboards it would help too. Most women I know wear heels only a handful of times a year.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 04/03/2024 16:38

It's rare to see them in London now, but they will be back. Everything comes around again.

I hope to be dead by then though!

BarrelOfOtters · 04/03/2024 16:40

I really think they've gone, I was at a posh do the other day and wore jewelled flat sandals - which I thought looked nice. They were very few 'proper' heels that I noticed.

Well...gone for now. They'll be back. But maybe next time it'll be blokes wearing them....and unable to run for a bus.

I wear them every day.

To reassure a pp, I have my own teeth, my own skin colour is unenhanced and I'm pretty sure I'm not orange, I don't have fillers and I don't have a facelift ponytail. Judgey much? 🙄

DrearyLane · 04/03/2024 16:43

A mum on the school run totters walks across the playground in vertiginous heels every day. I don’t know how she manages it.

BigWillyLittleTodger · 04/03/2024 16:43

If I get dressed up for a night out I wear heels or to a wedding etc. in the day I sometimes wear a chunky heeled ankle boot which is still easy to walk in, I get tired of trainers with everything I like to change it up a bit, so the answer is sometimes!

crostini · 04/03/2024 16:43

I often wear boots with heels.

stayathomer · 04/03/2024 16:43

My mum was getting rid of some of her old heels- all sensible shoes but pretty (I’m a runners girl) and was in shock that they were comfy and wearable for a few hours at a time! I have flat shoes for trousers but eg ballet pumps would look awful on me so thrilled with these now for pt meetings or formal occasions!

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 04/03/2024 16:44

Never worn them. Horrid things.

MonsteraMama · 04/03/2024 16:46

I wear boots with heels because they're comfy, but I haven't worn a proper stiletto since my 20's. I actually found some of the skyscrapers I used to wear that made me 6' and I'm astonished I didn't break my ankle or my neck or both!

shenandoahvalley · 04/03/2024 16:47

The second violinist of the Vienna Philharmonic was wearing them on stage a week ago! Obvs she was sitting down. They looked soooo painful.

clim · 04/03/2024 16:48

I think they look thirsty these days

Taylormiffed · 04/03/2024 16:48

One of our personnel dept wears them. It does seem a bit Stepford. She stands out like a sore thumb.

I think they look thirsty these days

Is this a typo, or (more likely) slang I don't know?

clim · 04/03/2024 16:50

Thirsty - slang. Thirsty for attention, bit try hard

Elsewhere123 · 04/03/2024 16:50

It think it is fantastic that heels are on the way out. Seeing young women wearing comfortable shoes is wonderful. Their feet will be so much healthier when they are old.

clim · 04/03/2024 16:53

My MIL reckons that wearing flats is akin to wearing wellies 🤣
Which is hard to not take personally when my shoes of choice are flat docs

bombastix · 04/03/2024 16:53

Nope. It's a way to make you look really old in London

clim · 04/03/2024 16:53

Yep, they're so dated and frumpy now
