Old fashioned things you wish would come back

I was just thinking about how much more convenient shopping would be if it became the norm to use a wheelie bag again (commonly used by very old ladies nowadays). Carrying milk and other heavy things in Bags for Life isn't great.

I also think the sun umbrellas would make walking in the sun much more comfortable.

Yes, @Boujibroke - go to the M&S lingerie dept. I bought cotton ones for the summer. Bliss. They have Cooltech half and full slips which are anti static and incredibly comfortable.

SusanSHelit · 17/09/2023 10:32

Sweat protectors. Like little slip on slim pads that go under your arms and protect your armpits in your clothes from sweat stains. Meant you could wear the same shirt/dress multiple times without having to wash the whole thing. You just wash the little armpit pads and you'd have a few.

I think they're such a fabulous idea I have no idea why they went out of fashion

ForeverYellow · 17/09/2023 10:34

My first thought is leg warmers . I would have every colour and pattern .

Hats! Oh, I wish hats would come back.

Slips, aprons and pinafores are so practical.

Gloves. Now they are only worn for sports and in winter. Funny how they didn't become more popular during the pandemic. Could simply have laundered them with masks and the rest of the washing rather than constantly sanitising hands.

I frequently wear hats, always an apron for housework/cooking and gloves in the cold!

I've often wondered why Jane Austen-style bonnets have never had a fashion revival. They frame the face beautifully. They come in fine cotton for summer and thick velvet or wool in winter. The cap bit keeps off the rain or the sun. The under-chin tie stops them flying off in high wind. They keep your ears warm. I'd love a velvet bonnet in winter. I'm sure they could be redesigned not to look like we're extras in Pride & Prejudice.

I’ve had a wheelie bag since my thirties! I lived in a wonderful city area that has greengrocers, butchers etc. and I could do my whole Christmas shop a short walk from my house. I know live near a famous market.

I’d like to see mourning bands come back. They are before my time but apparently my dad was anachronistically wearing one when he met my mum in around 1960. Sounds morbid I know but I often think how helpful it would have been for strangers to know you were in a fragile state without you having to say anything and risk bursting into tears.

My Dad wore one in the seventies, so they were still used then. I too wish they would come back, a visible signal of mourning.

I have a few of these and the different length options are great, but I would prefer to be able to buy proper fitted slips rather than flat stretchy ones. They fit much better over the bust if they are darted and fitted, or have shaped cups.

XpelairHamPortal · 17/09/2023 10:40

It's hats and proper tailoring for me. I love seeing old photographs from the time when people would be properly dressed up for popping down to the shops.

Yep, manners, standards and consideration.

What's bra slip?

A bra slip was a bra and slip in one garment.

You ca still get them. Charnos make one and it’s available on Amazon.

Boujibroke · 17/09/2023 10:44

Thank you @Maireas 😊

Will take a look and maybe treat myself.

JoinInBetty · 17/09/2023 10:44

My nan never referred to the neighbours by their first name. When we were out she was also called Mrs (surname)

.I wish we'd never gone decimal imagine buying something for 7 and 6.

Getting paid weekly I would love that

Light as a feather and very comfortable. No nore clingy or see through clothes!

EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon · 17/09/2023 10:46

'Classic' blouses ie the kind that button all the way down (as opposed to tunics with a few buttons at the top) and are just simply cut, not longer at the back, no horrible frills at the neckline or on the cuffs. Surprisingly hard to find, IME.

BreatheAndFocus · 17/09/2023 10:46

Hats, definitely! I often look at vintage newsreels and admire the hats. They look so smart. Also, nice tailored clothes. Gloves, yes, but I particularly miss driving gloves for sentimental reasons. I also like waistcoats on men.

I didn’t realise you could still get slips. I had a couple for years but got rid of them a while ago because I assumed they were out of fashion. I’d also like to see everyday suspenders come back (rather than just posh sexy ones). I much prefer stockings to tights for airflow.

Lentilweaver · 17/09/2023 10:47

The No Botox or fillers look.

EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon · 17/09/2023 10:47

Agree re wheelie bags BTW OP. I'm sure I saw some quite funky ones advertised on the web a while back, but they don't seem to have caught on.

ididntwanttodoit · 17/09/2023 10:50

Those little concertina plastic rainhats that you could keep in your pocket ... although I do seem to recall the cotton ties would get wet and drip down your neck!
Underskirts. I really wish more people would wear them - I am sick of seeing knickers and bellybuttons showing through thin skirts

dressedforcomfort · 17/09/2023 10:51

Slow fashion. Mending clothes and making them last. Wearing natural fibres - I went in Next yesterday and it was wall to wall polyester as far as the eye could see.

dressedforcomfort · 17/09/2023 10:52

@Lentilweaver completely agree.

Lentilweaver · 17/09/2023 10:52

Oh yes, definitely natural fibres.

RedLem0nade · 17/09/2023 10:52

Hats and gloves definitely.

Also, house coats (if that’s what they are called)- sort of full coverage aprons with sleeves for applying over clothing while cleaning/cooking and generally pottering at home.

MerylSqueak · 17/09/2023 10:55

Everyone uses shopping trollies in Spain, not just young 'ens.

I'd like a shoe repair shop back in my town. We haven't had one for years as there was no demand due to fast fashion prices being so low. Crazy.

Boujibroke · 17/09/2023 10:56

Just thought of another one. Lovely nightwear for women, it's all the big t shirts which make me look like a bag of spuds. I would like more elegant nigh dresses please.

StartUpHelp · 17/09/2023 10:56

People looking natural/aging naturally.
