Old fashioned things you wish would come back

I was just thinking about how much more convenient shopping would be if it became the norm to use a wheelie bag again (commonly used by very old ladies nowadays). Carrying milk and other heavy things in Bags for Life isn't great.

I also think the sun umbrellas would make walking in the sun much more comfortable.

I think it seems a bit old fashioned to look after your clothes now. I iron mine (yes, there are many threads on this!) but I also replace buttons, deal with minor repairs and hang them up. I have colleagues who do look as if they store clothing in a ball under the bed. I think it's to do with clothing being so cheap nowadays, and discarded quickly.

RedAndWhiteCarnations · 17/09/2023 11:35

Wheely bags are very normal in France. Not sure if they ever got out of fashion tbh.
i have one. Dh hates going out with it but I find it amazing to go to the market.

AllTheChaos · 17/09/2023 11:36

I also miss leaving one’s back door unlocked in case anyone wants to pop in / postie pops in to ask for a cuppa etc. But I live in London, so no. But it’s what my gran always did and it was lovely!

Wolvesart · 17/09/2023 11:37

This will probably be regarded as ick by some but I’d like to return to a time when bodily hairlessness wasn’t a thing.

I'll join you (although I'll need to buy a wheelie trolley for the full house)

Do it! They’re really useful!

clowniform · 17/09/2023 11:37

Uniqlo do slips too (Airism)
I hate wheelie bags though, they're a pain in the back to load/unload and all the stuff at the bottom gets squashed.

Puddlewoman · 17/09/2023 11:38

I have a shopping trolley its plain black and now that I have it I've noticed a lot more people with them. I have had some looks and giggles but its usually from women my age and slightly older so 40-50 ish. Younger people aren't bothered by them.
For the next heatwave I am going to to be getting a parasol I am quite pale so burn easily especially the top of my head and hats bother me. I do like the idea of bringing gloves back.

I’m with you. It’s something I started to think about after having my daughter. It made me realise how weird it is wanting to look like / wanting one’s partner to look like a pre-pubescent child rather than a sexually mature adult. It really freaks me out now.

Cheeesus · 17/09/2023 11:40

Funny, I was just looking at fake collar things on Amazon, thinking WFH teams smartness.
They still exist 😃

Re tailored clothes
i have clothes adjusted to me.
Again I dint think it has ever gone away in France. You often have shops proposing alterations (length if trousers/shirt, waist etc…) when you buy your clothes.
We have a tailor close to home. She is always busy.

Nottogetapenny · 17/09/2023 11:40

Shops should close on a Sunday, and not only Christmas Day but Boxing Day. I’m not religious but people who are in retail miss out on family time on these days.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 17/09/2023 11:45

When we went to paris 10 years ago, all the chic ladies were doing their shopping in trolleys, mainly due to the lack of big supermarkets in the centre. My Dd in Amsterdam is considering one.
think Uniqlo do bra slips.
Negligés (sp) I always wanted one to waft elegantly in. Totally impractical.

Timeturnerplease · 17/09/2023 11:46

Leggings. I know they’re still around, but seen as quite dated by a lot of people. Insanely practical for me, running around after small people all weekend.

YellowStickerDateNight · 17/09/2023 11:47

Bags on wheels are called Sholley

Leggings seem to be worn by most women where I live. Also, young women seem to wear those gym type leggings by default.

Apparently wheely bags are all the rage in parts of Spain where young people (especially students with lots of books) use them and I've seen quite a few round here.

Ah that would be great, I hate seeing young teen girls trying to balance their books impractically on one shoulder in oversized handbags, they just never look comfortable or ready to learn, like they can only participate in education meeting a really impractical beauty standard, like they don't belong. I'm biased though as I still use a rucksack for work as a grown woman instead of a handbag!

Erm wtf? They don’t look ready to learn ?

you’re allow to enjoy fashion trends and study at the same time. This is a ridiculous comment shrouded with misogyny.

I learnt to use sewing machine for this reason! Especially for pant legs.

Slips under clothing. Most dresses and skirts are clingy and see through. I always wear one, keeps the clothes opaque and they hang better.

I'm a big fan of good old fashioned slips too! Can be hard to find one these days. Most shops only stock those spandex 'shaping' slips, which are not the same thing at all.

IcedPurple · 17/09/2023 11:56

I've been known to use a wheelie suitcase for my shopping. It's not as good as a purpose build wheelie trolley however.

AInightingale · 17/09/2023 12:01

Why don't you get a rucksack, I haven't carried heavy shopping in bags for years. Far better to carry the weight across your shoulders. A small airline cabin size one contains loads of stuff.

LondonLass91 · 17/09/2023 12:01

Stopping and removing hats when a funeral procession goes by. I always make my child stop and remove their hats if wearing them.

johnd2 · 17/09/2023 12:02

I think wheelie bags directly correlate with lack of car use.
Old ladies used to be the ones without cars, in our part of London car use is not necessary but wheelie bags are popular.
I prefer to rock the empty pushchair for shopping though, really convenient even though a little odd.

I gave a link upthread - M&S have a whole section - they're not shapewear, just very light slips. Cotton in summer, other non static fabrics in winter. John Lewis also have them.

Cantonet · 17/09/2023 12:07

Clothes without lycra.
It makes me hot & sweaty & my skin crawl these days. And unfortunately nearly all t shirts have lycra in them.
Yes to natural fibres & cotton slips/petticoats. I bought several from M&S a few years ago.

A 100% yes to people dressing up for occasions. Or even a trip into town. Everyone looks so scruffy nowadays.

Plus a ban on men in grey trackie bottoms with their bits showing 🙄
