Old fashioned things you wish would come back

I was just thinking about how much more convenient shopping would be if it became the norm to use a wheelie bag again (commonly used by very old ladies nowadays). Carrying milk and other heavy things in Bags for Life isn't great.

I also think the sun umbrellas would make walking in the sun much more comfortable.

And agree on the natural fibres.

Neat, clean fingernails.

Table manners and good manners in general.
Consideration for others.

Absolutely.

Was out to dinner somewhere quite smart this week. Right in my line of sight was someone waving their cutlery about. And talking with their mouth open. Yuk.

YY to gloves and higher quality fairly priced clothing (& consuming less).
I already wear hats, aprons, slips and nice PJs though.

BarleySugars · 17/09/2023 11:02

The sun is my absolute enemy so i use an umbrella as a parasol quite freely! Also a big hat fan for sun or cold so rarely without one. I'm discovering the joys of a pinny far too late in life.

My friend in uni had a tartan granny shopping trolley, it was brilliant and if i did shopping on foot i'd have one in a heart beat! But then, my style has been described as 'granny chic' before 😂

IslandAngle · 17/09/2023 11:03

Where I live (SE London) people of all ages use wheelie trolleys. They’re very practical if you go to the market and don’t want to be lugging multiple bags around!

IhearyouClemFandango · 17/09/2023 11:04

I used to use a Wheely bag for my shopping every week. I had a walking toddler, a baby in a sling and so walking to the shops was far easier with one. DH used to laugh at me, but I cared not one jot.

I'm going to buy one for days out next year, now we have no push chairs.

Slips under clothing. Most dresses and skirts are clingy and see through. I always wear one, keeps the clothes opaque and they hang better.

The fact that no one apparently wears slips under unlined dresses or clothes was on of the many strange facts I've discovered on MN (others include the obsessive levels of house cleaning and fretting over Christmas)

MariePaperRoses · 17/09/2023 11:08

Men looking like men and not women.

Lentilweaver · 17/09/2023 11:12

I saw A Haunting In Venice yesterday, which was absolute garbage, but so loved the tailored suits and neat hairstyles for both women and men. Course, everybody was a lot thinner in the 40s.

eddiemairswife · 17/09/2023 11:14

Dickeys were popular when there was clothes rationing. I remember when a friend of my mother went out for a meal, and halfway through she felt warm and took her suit jacket off forgetting she only had a dickey on underneath.

MissBattleaxe · 17/09/2023 11:14

People who can sit through a show or film without checking their phones. I'd love that.

TotalOverhaul · 17/09/2023 11:18

Bust darts. But I've already started a separate thread about the lack of them in women's wear.

Fourlegsandatail · 17/09/2023 11:19

Normal looking eyebrows!

NatashaDancing · 17/09/2023 11:20

It wouldn't occur to me to cook without wearing an apron. I've got about half a dozen cross back aprons.

I wear hats when it's cold (proper felt halts, not beanies) and gloves.

Re slips do posters really never notice them in the underwear departments of M&S, John Lewis , Debenhams, House of Fraser?

Puffalicious · 17/09/2023 11:21

I bought my sister a wheelie shopper from IKEA about 18 years ago. She used it loads when DC were small- shops/ library/ humpfing crap. DN now uses it at uni for food shopping- still going strong.

Think I'll buy DS one - who moved out to his student flat yesterday. I'm so sad today, but practical organising keeping me focused!

Shops closing on a Sunday . Sunday was family day, a day of rest . We should have followed Germany and kept Sundays as a day of rest .

What about those working in the hospitality and tourism sectors are they not entitled to have Sundays off as well?

Highlyflavouredgravy · 17/09/2023 11:22

Morality and standards rather than people getting naked on TV and talking about tit wanks.

Lentilweaver · 17/09/2023 11:24

It's S and B! not AIBU😁

fruitnutz · 17/09/2023 11:28

If you cycle, a folding bike + bike bag can be used like a shopping trolley. Search for 'Brompton shopping cart mode' for examples.

AllTheChaos · 17/09/2023 11:31

I didn’t realise how old fashioned I am! I have and wear slips, gloves, hats, and (occasionally) proper tailored clothes! I also have a number of aprons I use at home, including a lovely polka dot frilly half apron - and I have a funky wheely trolley!

cocksstrideintheevening · 17/09/2023 11:31

Lots of very colourful wheelie bags around here for all ages!

Wheelie bags are everywhere here as car use strongly discouraged. I first got one about 15 years ago and I called it buggy replacement therapy. I’d hit used to being able to transport more shopping with DC buggy.

I'll join you (although I'll need to buy a wheelie trolley for the full house)

I do wish properly tailored clothes and dressing well as a matter of course would come back in, alongside having far fewer but better quality clothes, that one cares for and mends. For men as much as, if not more than, women! For the entirely selfish reason that I like looking at well dressed men 😊 With more of a focus on behaviour and less on looking good for the ‘gram etc. And yes, I wish the ‘love island’ look of obvious tweakments would die a death…
