Old fashioned things you wish would come back

I was just thinking about how much more convenient shopping would be if it became the norm to use a wheelie bag again (commonly used by very old ladies nowadays). Carrying milk and other heavy things in Bags for Life isn't great.

I also think the sun umbrellas would make walking in the sun much more comfortable.

with reference to postcards, I always ask children and grandchildren to send me one when they go away. I think that nowadays, with texting being so ubiquitous, we lose aa bit of history without written communication.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/09/2023 12:55

I see lots of younger people using wheelie shopping bags now - hardly any different from wheelie airline cabin bags really, are they?

I still don’t use one though - because I am old and still fighting anything old-lady-ish!

Hats! It is really hard to find formal hats now that aren't just big fascinators. If anyone has any suggestions let me know!

Misunderstoodagain · 17/09/2023 12:57

@MrsApplepants ah beat me to it 🤣

Cardigans with buttons and button holes you can get in M&S, John Lewis, H&M, Next and tkmaxx. I'm sure other places besides.

KimWexlersPonyTail · 17/09/2023 13:01

Knickers with a decent cotton gussett and no sweaty lycra.
Shampoo in sachets
Proper celery that is white and crunchy not green and stringy
Coca-Cola as it used to be before the recipe change
Chocolate that was dairy and not full of palm oil
Great British Bake Off like it used to be, on BBC with Mary, Mel and Sue
Dr Who before the wokism hit
The Repair Shop begore the crying started...

Hats! Oh, I wish hats would come back.

Slips, aprons and pinafores are so practical.

Gloves. Now they are only worn for sports and in winter. Funny how they didn't become more popular during the pandemic. Could simply have laundered them with masks and the rest of the washing rather than constantly sanitising hands.

That wouldnt bring any profit to the people who make and sell all the sanitiers...

Maireas · 17/09/2023 13:03

I wonder if part of the problem is online shopping? I like to shop in person, feeling the quality and the fabric, trying on. This could be why people haven't spotted slips or cardigans.

Shops closing on a Sunday . Sunday was family day, a day of rest . We should have followed Germany and kept Sundays as a day of rest .

I remember when John Lewis were closed on Mondays and Sundays. Was so strange shopping in our local shopping centre on a Monday when JL was the only closed shop.

Love my aprons with pockets great for when picking little bits up off the floor when vacuuming.

Yes, I didn't understand this comment. Cardigans aren't an endangered species.

I know! I got a couple of lovely cashmere cardigans from M&S last winter, and cotton ones from H&M.
See the perplexion about slips!

fruitnutz · 17/09/2023 13:07

The crowds who watched QE11's funeral procession were embarrassingly scruffy. Who the hell wears a tracksuit?! 😆

It ensured that all staff got a two day weekend, which I think was nice.

What about those working in the hospitality and tourism sectors are they not entitled to have Sundays off as well?

I’m guessing the poster was using shops as a general blanket term for everything commercial. Sundays used to be dead when I was a child, not a car to be seen.

It was completely dead, wasn't it? It was a family day. People often went to the park or visited relatives.

Reins on toddlers.

They were the most useful thing I ever bought for mine. Took the stress out of airports and shopping mall visits.

Headscarves. Even my grandma stopped wearing them in her later years as she must have thought they looked dated! But she had a lovely selection of silk ones and wind or drizzle never bothered her hair! And they looked lovely.

Seconded!

I bought the old fashioned ones for my first grandchild. They were soon used by the parents. 😂

RosesAndHellebores · 17/09/2023 13:18

The in-store alteration lady; she always attended my grandma and I thought the little velvet pincushion strapped to her hand with the mother of pearl pins was awesome.

Formality: I hate this "Hey Roses" business in emails from people I don't know.

Handwritten letters.

If people must smoke, elegant cigarette holders.

Manicured nails with normal nail polish.

Pearls.

Twinsets.

Natural, sheer tights I am so bored of black opaques.

Lifeetc · 17/09/2023 13:20

"Sholley" is the brand name same as when people say "Hoover" they mean vacuum (unless they own a Hoover vacuum!) X

Sweat protectors. Like little slip on slim pads that go under your arms and protect your armpits in your clothes from sweat stains. Meant you could wear the same shirt/dress multiple times without having to wash the whole thing. You just wash the little armpit pads and you'd have a few.

I think they're such a fabulous idea I have no idea why they went out of fashion

I hadn't heard of them before your post, but I searched on eBay and they do have some on there.

Seeing Kate pushing one of her children in a Silver Cross pram reminded me of how much I miss prams. And pushchairs where baby faces Mum.
