Old fashioned things you wish would come back

I was just thinking about how much more convenient shopping would be if it became the norm to use a wheelie bag again (commonly used by very old ladies nowadays). Carrying milk and other heavy things in Bags for Life isn't great.

I also think the sun umbrellas would make walking in the sun much more comfortable.

Stalls selling oven baked jacket potatoes with generous fillings. I remember having one in Covent Garden in the 80s, lovely.

KettleOn919 · 18/09/2023 09:30

Shoes coming in half sizes. I know a few shops still do this, but most don't. If you have small feet, a whole size up is too great an increment... one size just slightly too small, the next size up like a huge boat.

Also, proper size 3 shoes. Size 36, which is usual given as the equivalent, nearly always comes up larger than the old size 3.

I remember having a jacket potato there in the 80s too, with some lovely chilli on it.

Trifle. And syllabub.

😂😂😂

I'm ahead of the trend. Brooches on scarves are pretty and practical

Sticking to original plans made to meet without texting to try updating changes and constantly suggesting alternatives.

Maireas · 18/09/2023 12:04

Hello again, @justasking111 !
Yes, I like to wear a brooch on my jacket lapel at work. I have quite a collection, many from my late mother and aunt.

Middleagedmeangirls · 18/09/2023 12:59

Body Perms. They were the only way to get volume in my very straight hair.

I still wear slips with bias cut dresses. They hang much better. They must be pretty main stream because I bought mine in Primark.

Hood hairdryers, I loved sitting under them reading a magazine and the only way to get my thick unruly hair properly dry and smooth.

AInightingale · 18/09/2023 14:29

Furniture shops selling things like pine wardrobes and beds, local ones round me all closed during the pandemic. Now we're stuck with things like Oak FurnitureLand (expensive and months for delivery) or flatpacks. Oh I just want to BUY something and for two burly men to carry it into the house ready-made.

Darklane · 18/09/2023 14:31

Bonnets

justasking111 · 18/09/2023 14:32

She says, on the internet, possibly using a phone 😆

In all seriousness, the internet/mobiles have been a godsend for many, including those who are disabled/housebound. Not all progress is bad.

I think children’s clothes were better in the 80’s.. I remember practical stuff and lots of bright colours.. not so much little kids (girls especially) dressed in adult fashions.

The way fashion retailers expect girls to dress makes me really cross at times. Kids under 10 in crop tops, leggins that are skin tight and nearly see through and don’t get me started on ‘Be kind’ vs tops with trains and dinosaurs.

I've been wearing brooches for years. I find they really smarten up an outfit. Charity shops and ebay are an excellent source of vintage brooches. I particularly like cloissoné brooches.

Those of you with a trolley, do you push or pull them when full? I'm thinking of getting one and walking to the shops more

This thread inspired me to buy one!

I push it in crowded places in order to not annoy people, but otherwise pull.

GwennyWen · 20/09/2023 17:22

I occasionally use a wheelie bag, although I do drive, too. I don't like driving short journeys so often take it if I need anything heavy, and used to bring logs home in it when I lived somewhere with an open fire.

I noticed an article in the Guardian fairly recently about a lack of social mobility in the UK and they used a picture of a young woman pulling a wheelie bag (or trundle as i call them) along the road. They were obviously using the photo to suggest 'poverty' which I thought was very odd. We have some curious ideas in this country!

I wish characterful housing and architecture would return, along with good craftsmanship in clothing - embroidery and interesting stitching. I loved the bohemian 1920's.

GwennyWen · 20/09/2023 17:27

I also kept a short, amusing diary for my sister when I used the trundle (wheelie bag) in the country as it tickled her so much - the idea of my having a vehicle and using a trundle. I had quite a few interesting escapades with it and people were always so chatty about it. It is kind of like having an unusual dog..Quite a few young women, and men, said they had always wanted to use one and were now inspired (I am not old!) or in dire straights)).

The worst occasion involved the wheels popping off as I was crossing a busy dual carriageway. The cars were extremely patient and kind (unusually!) but I did have a lot of trouble hoisting everything back home. My tip is never to over load it Grin

sueelleker · 20/09/2023 18:58

I've got a wheelie bag with triple wheels-or at least I did. I got too close to the kerb at a bus stop, and the bus caught one of the wheels. I now have 3 wheels on one side, and two on the other! I tried to get replacement wheels, but couldn't get any that fitted.https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07VXVCDW1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
