Old fashioned things you wish would come back

I was just thinking about how much more convenient shopping would be if it became the norm to use a wheelie bag again (commonly used by very old ladies nowadays). Carrying milk and other heavy things in Bags for Life isn't great.

I also think the sun umbrellas would make walking in the sun much more comfortable.

Wheelie bags are very popular in Australia ! You don't have to be old to use one, I see people of all ages with them. Very convenient if you are walking to the shops. Get one and start a trend - very environmentally friendly !

Tailored clothes instead of the shapeless baggy sacks in the shops. Which are pinned on the models anyway to look good.
Solid or geometric prints rather than everything coming up floral.
Normal sized sleeves and collars.

Yes, all of these.

Manners, especially please and thank you.

Dressing up properly for things.

you’re allow to enjoy fashion trends and study at the same time. This is a ridiculous comment shrouded with misogyny.

I say it out of empathy not judgement because I find the beauty standards and peer pressure misogynistic, meaning girls are uncomfortably dressed in a situation they should be comfortably dressed and empowered. It's like high heels in the work place. I don't see the fashion interests of men putting added pressure on them (except maybe in summer when they have less flexibility in their wardrobe!)

CosyNightsOnTheSofa · 17/09/2023 12:15

The original recipe Cadburys chocolate, it was sooo nice in the 80s and 90s. It's gross now!

ChishiyaBat · 17/09/2023 12:16

I would love a sun umbrella, I have had this one in my wishlist for months, I will try and remenber to buy it before next summer😂

Hah just realised it's in style and beauty and didn't read properly 🤣!

Don't know if you watch 'Gogglebox' but Giles and Mary were having one of their whimsical chats the other night about how unappetising chocolate and chocolate biscuits are now. Is this a thing? I've never really been the biggest fan of it, but has the recipe changed?

Viviennemary · 17/09/2023 12:24

Normal tv's. Not this multiple remote control stuff. Those cross over aprons. Not keen on headscarves. Though the ones those Sloane rangers wore in the 60s and 70s looked quite nice.

Wintersgirl · 17/09/2023 12:24

When Boxing day was a day off for most people, no Boxing day sales...

EtiennePalmiere · 17/09/2023 12:24

Sweater sets and stockings with a seam in the back, you can buy them but I might feel self conscious. I love my UV umbrella, cotton hankies and m&s slips though !

FannyBawz · 17/09/2023 12:27

EVERYONE has one in Spain, and they’re not all tartan numbers either. In fact I had one while I lived there in a pucci design 😂

Everyone uses shopping trollies in Spain, not just young 'ens.

I'd like a shoe repair shop back in my town. We haven't had one for years as there was no demand due to fast fashion prices being so low. Crazy.

I lived in a popular place in Spain and never saw anyone using a shopping trolley under the age of 60! Shame really as I’d love one.

Id like to bring back more elegant wear. We all walk around these days in comfort which I get, me too, but I love the look of we’ll cut, decent materials, fixing clothes rather than the cheap stuff that gets churned out, worn once, fits badly, made of cheap material and then binned.

I'm a big fan of good old fashioned slips too! Can be hard to find one these days. Most shops only stock those spandex 'shaping' slips, which are not the same thing at all.

M&S always have large numbers of non shaping slips, waist and full length. I expect John Lewis, Debenhams and House of Fraser shops have as well. Next online have loads, including cotton slips.

Thanks. I'm giggling a bit at the 'Buy men's women's slips online' link. Men wear slips? Who knew!

Maybe it's a bad translation from Italian? In Italian, slip means underpants!

ickky · 17/09/2023 12:36

Horse and carts instead of cars and only have lorries for big deliveries.

RicherThanYews · 17/09/2023 12:37

I was born in 1988 and my mum put petticoats under my dresses, I miss those 😂 then again I had ribbons in my hair.

I would LOVE full dresses to come back, although they're impractical ofc.

Handcreamqueen · 17/09/2023 12:42

Pantries and larders - my Nan had a pantry and I loved rummaging in there as a child.
In fact, old fashioned kitchens in general, I hate perfect looking homes, I loved the mismatched look of my grandparents house, it was a home not just a house.
She also had cotton flannelette sheets and eiderdowns - I loved sleepovers at my grandparents house.

Move to Cartagena. If you really feel like splashing out, you can get one with special wheels on the back which lets you walk it up curbs and stairs. 👌

I came on to say exactly this.

Normal clothes in a normal size, with normal sleeves and collars - no excess or mad bits.

Sending postcards. I used to love receiving a handful every summer, collecting the stamps and putting pins in a map for all the places I got them from.

Nowtbettertodo · 17/09/2023 12:46

Perms

I love curly hair but it such a faff to do it and it usually just drops out really quickly.

Now longing for my granny -who died nearly ten years ago - and her pantry. She had a sweetie box and we were allowed to pick a bar of chocolate when we went home.

Tweed skirt suits with a nice jumper, thick tights and a pair of brogues is a look I would be all over in winter!

ScottChegg · 17/09/2023 12:50

Housecoats, like my great aunt used to wear over her clothes whilst cleaning. I know housecoat can mean different things; I don't mean a dressing gown! I mean the nylon things with gingham or floral patterns. Seems like a very practical garment to me.

Also, cookers with eye level grills.

Sandinyourshoes · 17/09/2023 12:51

Cardigans with buttons and buttonholes. I’ve resorted to hoodies and have only one cardigan-jacket I got in about 1995.

100% cotton t shirts including the seam stitching thread as that all too often seems to have been replaced by some kind of artificial thread that irritates my skin, and silky laundry labels rather than the scratchy hard ones which are just as irritating when cut off, many times I've had to cut open the seam to remove the label and then hand stitch it back together.

Haven’t worn a skirt for a long time but last time I had occasion to look for a slip, they only had above knee ones in my nearest M&S. Maybe its changed though that was over a year ago.
