I was all excited about Tar and it’s clothing till I read is a bit long … I will wait for Bo to watch it and tell us all about it 😀😉
The first movie I remember watching in the cinema was Shark… I was traumatised after that …
Then when I was 10 we returned to live in my home town and my uncle used to work in the cinema so every weekend we would be dropped off with my brother, watch everything, be given a ton of popcorn and chocolate and then be picked up. Happy days.
I have no idea why my parents did not allow tv at home but would happily let us watch some questionable stuff at the cinema 🙄

Talking about films, I have not found a single outfit from the Oscar’s that I thought , wow that is interesting! Nothing , all very samey and a bit of ‘bridal’ look .
Have I missed anyone dressed interestingly?

I would never contemplate MH outside sample sales, but whenever I tried their shoes at sample sales I found them uncomfortable for me.

ShangPie · 13/03/2023 17:28

Red same here - the not-red carpet looks were all a bit bridal (and maybe overly delicate?) for me too.

Seemed to me like the bolder colour outfits looked brighter and more interesting against the beige background, esp Cara Delevigne (although she risked an Angelina Jolie Floating Leg)

I wonder if they were planned before the carpet colour change was announced? Or if everyone just felt that it was a beige year as part of bo’s greynaissance / fashion bland-standing? Either way, I mostly felt meh 😑

botemp · 13/03/2023 17:44

Yeah, the new environment is weird. The good thing I'll say about it is the colour they painted it was a good choice, it made everyone look really healthy and alive, except those with a heavy cake of makeup, unfortunately. Cara Delevingne was lucky with the dress overshadowing the heavy makeup she was sporting.

But they all just sort of looked lost in space, I'm not sure what was wrong with the carpet but at least have a floor and wall distinction. And the cameras seemed really close and the pictures look weird because of it, and so many in rather odd platform sandals. They really looked lost in the whole ensemble with many and just made the wearer look like a suspended pixie between voluminous dress and shoes. Cate Blanchett was nice enough but that was very blah on the Cate Blanchett scale of red carpet moments.

Red, was the movie Jaws or is there a movie named Shark that I don't know about? I'm just pondering if it was called Shark in Spanish.

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 13/03/2023 19:06

Lol yes you are right I meant Jaws and yes it was called Tiburón (shark) 😁

Redandblue11 · 13/03/2023 19:12

Btw - anyone watching next in fashion season 2 in Netflix ?

MmePoppySeedDefage · 13/03/2023 19:24

I don't know anything about it - I take it you liked S1?

Does anyone else remember "Videofashion: the fashion magazine you watch" series years ago? It took fashion seriously. I used to have to record it on the video recorder.

Looking at the hoo-hah over Gary Linekar reminds me that few women are likely to be that bothered, yet look at the column inches, and TV time devoted to football. Women are more likely to be interested in fashion; yet we get nothing much on TV and only a few columns in the newspapers.

botemp · 13/03/2023 19:38

It sounds kind of weird in English (Shark) but Tiburón sounds great, I'm filing it away for a name for a pet, you can shout out that name in admonishment and in a aren't you so cute way pretty well.

I barely managed to get through season one of NIF. Now that I know a bit more about sewing I'm not sure how well I'll be able to tolerate it, either the shoddy sewing on the show is going to annoy me or I'll be annoyed that their quick shoddy sewing is better than me at my slowest and trying my best...

There's a whole scandal (somewhat MeToo but mostly abuse of power, bullying, sideling whistleblowers, etc.) here at the equivalent of the BBC but just the sport department, news and games coverage, sort of a separate entity here. They were untouchable and very powerful for years because their department brings in so much ad revenue, so I suspect if fashion shows brought in ad revenue in the same way we'd see more coverage. Money and sports is such a weird thing, I can sort of get the high salaries as you can only physically perform when you're young-ish but we're way past that now. Meanwhile, I thought I just disliked some of those sport presenters because they were so into sports and a bit arrogant about it, turns out they're just arrogant bastards who happen to be into sports.

Floisme · 13/03/2023 20:02

Oh I like football! But my views on the Gary Lineker affair are tempered by the fact that I can't recollect him speaking up for Jenni Murray when she was disciplined by the BBC (in her Woman's Hour days). Plus one of my few rules for life is that generally the only people one should compare to the Nazis are Nazis.

EffortlessDesmond · 13/03/2023 20:50

MmePoppy, it's noticeable that on the Times online comments for the fashion articles are disabled most of the time. I suspect it's because men wade in to tell us that it's trivial and a waste of money. I get so stroppy about it.

But yesterday I bought the (physical paper) Weekend FT for the first time in years because I was called for jury service so I wanted lots of worthwhile reading. And I was reminded of just how good the FT is. HTSI was men's fashion, with a beautiful photo essay of androgynous models. Home was green/sustainable. Literally, hours of good reading while I waited around. Arts section was all about Africa. Nothing trivial, no rehashes of stuff I had already read elsewhere. And a decent review section. I love it, but can't justify spending so much. A fiver at the weekend is starting to feel reasonable though.

Floisme · 13/03/2023 10:50

Who else remembers the double feature then? Anyone?

I've not seen Tár but I was very struck by Kerry Condon's outfits in The Banshees or Inisherin. How authentic they were for a woman living on an island off the coast of Ireland in the 1920s in anyone's guess, but I thought all those mustard yellows and deep pinks she wore were stunning. In fact I thought of you bani - no idea whether you'd have liked them but they weren't sludge.

I thought they were supposed to be quite authentic, I read something about one woman hand knitting all the woollens. It was such a good movie if very bleak.
my next movie outing here is the french film festival, an annual thing here, but it’s a comedy zombie movie so I don’t expect much fashion 😁

banivani · 14/03/2023 09:31

They're definitely authentic for the period, Time, but in the film everyone is wearing culchie island wear (n.b. lighthearted) except for Siobhán, who wears more modern 1920s stuff. Authentic, but would she, while still on the island? It doesn't really matter because it's not a documentary. However if all the traditional garb is super authentic I don't know, all the individual bits seemed to be to my uneducated eye. Shawls, red skirts etc. Everyone wore shoes though. It wasn't far off this but the aul woman wore a Kinsale cloak which is probably not super island-y. If I'm guessing. But sure what do I know.

Love Shark Grin and Moulin Rouge is a pile of nonsense. From the demographic thread I've been perusing The Hour website, Bo, but I'm back to wanting to try things on and not fancying ordering stuff for 300 euro and then returning it for x euro, and repeat ad nauseam. It was fun to see though.

Floisme · 14/03/2023 10:12

This is the colour combination that stayed with me. I can't imagine she could afford to order clothes from the mainland as they seemed to live on a smallholding, but maybe there were some top notch weavers and seamstresses on the island.... No matter. It reminded me of that long yellow puffa coat you were talking about bani but I can't remember whether you bought one or just admired it? Anyway mesmerising film, made me cry, although afterwards, when I tried to summarise the plot to a friend she said it sounded like shit and I did see her point!

banivani · 14/03/2023 13:11

Yes, I got the yellow puffer coat, makes me look like a big yellow maggot, love it! ;) It's a great colour combination that!

MmePoppySeedDefage · 14/03/2023 13:31

I hope this link works – it's to various re-workings of original vintage Shetland patterns, usually using the original colour palette

I read various interviews with the costume designer for the Banshees and she said that it's possible that Siobhan would have had American relatives who would have sent clothes back to her.

8f you want to recreate Colin Farrell's collared jumper, you can buy the authentic wool from the woolen mill that supplied it to the filmmakers. cushendale.ie/the-banshees-of-inisherin/

MmePoppySeedDefage · 14/03/2023 19:25

I wonder how scratchy it is. I got caught up in the Danish The Kill8ng jumper craze and got some authentic yarn to knit my own. Wow it was itchy, even over a thick T-shirt.

I have now discovered from following links that you can get Studio Donegal's fabulous tweedy yarn in merino - Soft Donegal. Must knit myself something with that.

botemp · 14/03/2023 19:34

I'm very jealous of anyone who can knit. I was taught it at some point but not very good at it, you need to pay just enough attention while finding a rhythm but I just wanted to autopilot and ended up having to constantly undo rows of mistakes. I don't need another hobby though and I remember looking into the cost of yarn (has inflation struck here too?) and calculating that I'd be spending more on material than buying a Sézane jumper, it would be nicer material but in all likelihood the first thing I attempted would be crap or forever unfinished.

How long was the Banshees movie, I checked Tár and 2h38m is argh. I'm quicker with getting through my to read list than to watch movies list.

bo there must be somewhere you can see the Tar costumes without ploughing through the film. It’s a bloody long film and it feels it, too. I sympathise with the knitting thing, I tried a few times but never progressed beyond a few rows because it always so tight I couldn’t get the damn wool off the needles to actually knit it - far too tense - it was the opposite of relaxing! So very impressed by people who can do it.

poppy my husband has brought me back
Icelandic sweaters when he’s been fishing up there and I have added to my collection via eBay - I love them (the sleeveless ones otherwise I look a bit Teletubby, zero definition!) They get softer and less scratchy with wear- maybe worth persevering, or persuade someone else to break them i for you? (The other possibility is I have rhino hide skin…. 🤡)

botemp · 14/03/2023 20:34

Would it be really disrespectful if I play it at 1.5 speed 🤫

Didn't Queen Elizabeth have someone to break in her shoes, surely they're jobless now and will take on de-itching jumpers...

OP posts:
mm47 · 14/03/2023 20:50

bo go go go!!!

and yes apparently QEII’s dresser broke in her shoes, at least one decent perk of the regal job. Definitely goalzzz as far as I’m concerned with my not so little hooves..:

ShangPie · 17/03/2023 10:33

Dropped off this chat for a bit, delighted to return and see lovely Irish knitting chat. I would love to learn to knit, not least as it would be a useful thing to do with my hands instead of just compulsively grabbing my phone 😳

Altho bo‘s right that it would probably get quite expensive and frustrating. I have form for taking homesteading / arty type classes (looking at you linocut, cheese making, mosaics…) and then never doing them again, so why not try knitting?!

Back to Irish knits, I recently got a beautiful chocolate brown baby alpaca very fine knit collared cardigan / knitted shirt from Irish brand Carbury (their website doesn’t work at all on my phone, soz) via eBay. It has Margaret Howell vibes in my mind, and I’m almost sad about the weather warming up as I will have to wait until autumn to wear it.

Recently picked up a pair of long wide leg Levi’s in stone / ecru that just seem to work with everything like they’ve always been in my wardrobe. Amazing to see how adding one new-season piece can refresh everything - apologies for being a tired cliché but it’s my first time to really register this happening in real time

Sooverthemill · 17/03/2023 10:51

@botemp Banershees isn't long, we watched it so it has to be under 2 hours! Fab knits there, I'm a knitter and have enjoyed the information about the knitters who made the jumpers in the film. So talented. I'm very sensitive to most wool/alpaca/ mohair and yak but can wear merino. Am wearing an Aran style jumper today that I knitted a few years ago in fact

botemp · 17/03/2023 11:59

Thanks @Sooverthemill , some movies can be long in length but fly by, but the comments of Tár actually being long and feeling it are not helping. I'll get to Banshees quicker, thanks to you, I suspect. Very jealous again of excellent knitting skills Envy

What is it with these hobbies Shangpie, I'm currently seriously sitting on my hands not to order ALL the things to get into Japanese carpentry 🙈 I also have this dream of having a whole home of items I personally made, the reality is going to be a museum of unfinished things made badly.

OP posts:
Floisme · 17/03/2023 14:53

Do you mind me asking how long you've been a knitter Sooverthemill? I'm always admiring your work on the 'What am I wearing' threads. It's one those skills I used to tell myself I'd learn in retirement but now I'm realising how much I'd have to work at it. I keep thinking how, if only I'd been a bit more diligent when people were actually trying to teach me, I might have been half competent by now, but it's like with cooking and sewing and crocheting - all those female skills I looked down my nose at as a teenager because they were 'girls' subjects'. Whenever I get annoyed or frustrated with young people I remind myself I was an even bigger bellend at their age.

I may have salvaged the Toast jacket. I let down the sleeves as far as I could, till the raw edge was showing and then went round with a zig zag stitch a couple of times. It meant detaching the sleeve from its lining, which means the lining is now floating loose somewhere around elbow length, so that might create a further problem but at least it's wearable for now.
