Evening Royal style and beauty fans.
Into the Carolean era, with more bling we hope! Also more state banquets?

At least Sophie's wedding tiara has been upgraded with a lovely band of diamonds at the base.

Meghan's red outfit comes across much better with the post processing in that photo than in the photos from the event itself.

Tassen · 04/10/2022 20:44

Definitely @Maireas the position of Head Librarian of The Royal Jewels is yours.
We'll all write you a glowing reference.

Talking of reference I know I have The Stuart Tiara (which I lend to Max 😆)

But I also have another one but I've forgotten which one it is!

Can you check your spreadsheet please?

Oh my goodness @Spudlet you have bagged a beauty there! Those emeralds are as big as lozenges!

Speaking of emeralds and the Spreadsheet of Splendour, I hope I am down as the official owner of Wallis Simpson's emerald engagement ring? I know I've gone on and on about how much I love it, but can't remember if I laid a formal claim?

meateatingveggie · 04/10/2022 20:45

Well the diamondsinthelibrary link took me down a tiara rabbit hole so beautiful I've missed most of this weeks Bake Off 🤦🏻‍♀️

Tassen · 04/10/2022 20:47

Oh my @Spudlet that emerald tiara is divine!
Can we all come to yours & have a try on please

You haven't missed much. Not so much baking this week.

My favourite wedding dresses are Sarah Chatto's and Lady Helen's and I loved the flowers each had as well. More recently, I'd say Eugenie and Beatrice's. Kate's was just a poor imitation of Grace Kelly's which was stunning.

Jewellery wise, I think I have dibs on the Spencer tiara, shares in the Cambridge tiara plus Grace Kelly's engagement rings (def the original ruby and diamond one) plus Max's engagement and the most recent addition, the sceptre. Oh, plus Queen Victorias tiara I posted a pic of a couple of weeks ago. Quite the collection for someone who doesn't actually wear any jewellery!

KillingMeDeftly · 04/10/2022 22:01

I loved Sarah Chatto's dress too, and Meghan's evening wedding gown with the halter neck.

Absolutely! Tiara party at Chez Spuds 👑

SenecaFallsRedux · 04/10/2022 23:11

For reasons I can't remember, during the height of the pandemic, we were invited to wear tiaras to a zoom meeting (team is all women). It was amazing that everyone had one. All fake of course, and several were borrowed from children's princess outfits, but courtesy of my last milestone birthday, I have my own. 👑

Tassen · 05/10/2022 01:43

Wow @SenecaFallsRedux your own tiara!
I think I have my wedding tiara somewhere in the attic.

I remember now that I also had dibs on Princess Margaret's Persian Turquoise Tiara/Parure

Found these black & white portraits of PM done by Lord Snowden in 1967. I think they are both in The National Portrait Gallery.
Margaret was rather beautiful

Re wedding dresses... Loved Meghan, Eugenie, Sarah C, Bea, Autumn. Really disliked Zara's unfortunately. Did not like the neckline of Kate's at all, boat neck or round neck would have been nicer, but the rest of it was gorgeous. My most recent favourite was Lady Gabriella!

My parents were at Lady Gabriella’s wedding!! I love her dress but my favourite is Autumn’s.

Eaumyword · 05/10/2022 07:04

How exciting @LadyCassandra!
Hands down for me, the best wedding dress was Meghan's evening gown. I also liked Gabriella's and loved the whole romantic feel of Bea's dress and flowers.

Spudlet · 05/10/2022 08:19

There are some gorgeous dresses on this list! And some which are very much of their time 😊

I think for me, the Scandi royals edge it. It’s a toss-up between CPM, Mette-Marit and CPV for my favourite.

KillingMeDeftly · 05/10/2022 09:35

Mette Marit's dress was gorgeous in its simplicity - it reminded me a bit of Lady Sarah's. The Luxembourg brides' Elie Saabs were beautiful too.

Letizia's was a bit disappointing but perhaps she hadn't yet found her signature style, and Maxima's isn't on there but it's unusually sedate for her. Not a Pringle in sight...

CPV wins for best tiara - that crown is immense but she carries it off. Madeleine's dress was pretty but IIRC kept slipping off one shoulder. She looked radiant though, perhaps because she was pregnant at the time.

And it's not my style at all but I've got to give Mabel credit for running with that bow theme!

Serenster · 05/10/2022 09:56

I absolutely loved Mabel’s bow dress - stunningly tailored, gorgeous retro silhouette, interesting design feature - up until around her hips when the conceit of the bows getting bigger really kicked in. If she’s kept them slightly bigger rather than comically large, it would have been one of my favourite ever dresses.

I loved Victoria’s whole look, in that it really was all about showing off her lovely figure, gorgeous face and that amazing tiara.

I also liked Mary’s overall look (controversial?) simply because it was such a step up from “Aussie real estate agent just like you or me” to a “Going to be a European Queen some day” vibe.

(Also, I found myself in a deep dive about the Danish court fracas the other day and discovered it’s not just us who are bemused by Joachim’s second wife being so similar in looks to his sister in law. Apparently Scandi gossip magazines had been speculating that this was not a coincidence when he got married, and there was an incident when Joachim tried to kiss Mary on the lips after a few wines at a gala dinner, while she leaned back and averted her face to avoid it. 👀 Awkward, if true!).

Serenster · 05/10/2022 10:03

And in case anyone doesn’t know what I’m referring to with Mabel’s dress - the dress is gorgeous -that side view! - but the train is ridiculous.🤣

LadyCassandra · 05/10/2022 10:03

I was in Australia when Mary got married and we watched the whole thing on tv. They showed it all, from the church to their first dance at the ball afterwards. We all got free icecream at Copenhagen Icecream shop!

NiqueNique · 05/10/2022 10:17

Oh my goodness Mabel...

@Serenster I didn’t like CPM’s dress/hair/overall wedding look very much but I know what you mean about the step up! The dress was lovely in some respects and the design with the folds was superbly executed, but I just didn’t think it worked very well on her. However it certainly must have felt wonderful for an ordinary person to have been able to put on such a gown on her wedding day to marry a Prince! And oh my word about the drunken kiss/designs on his brother’s wife...would certainly explain why there’s a rift between the brothers as they’d always been quite close and friendly before...

NiqueNique · 05/10/2022 10:19

@Serenster yes! It’s a gorgeous dress. And if she’d ended with (quite a few) sizes smaller on the bows it could have looked magnificent.

NiqueNique · 05/10/2022 10:22

@Tassen that last portrait of Margaret is one of my favourites. You can tell that it’s very intimate. She’s a woman in love.

KillingMeDeftly · 05/10/2022 11:04

There was something a bit, I don't know, "milk maid" about Mary's dress?

NiqueNique · 05/10/2022 11:07

Yes it just wasn’t quite right imo but it’s been so long since I looked at it that I can’t quite remember why. I think it was all just a little too much. I tend toward clean, simple lines.
