Dated make up

BelleOfTheProvince · 16/10/2021 22:15

I'm really confused. On another thread people said wearing eyeliner on the undereye was dated. I wear brown or copper normally around halfway across my eye. I don't want to look like a teenager but is this really dated? What do other people do.
(PS I'm low maintenance so no complicated cat eye type things will work for me!)

I am 21 and wear black eyeliner on my waterline. A lot of other my age do too.

Schhhteeevie · 19/10/2021 18:18

Struggling to understand why someone as cool as yourself might be on the style and beauty threads full stop? @musicforsnorks

ufucoffee · 19/10/2021 19:10

Fuck off @musicforsnorks

All seems innocent enough, but on a website which generally encourages feminism or at the very least, female autonomy and confidence threads such as these a really confusing.

Page after page of women, pass-aggressively shaming other women for a little bit of colour on their face or eyes, that has to be done a certain way to avoid the dreaded TERRORZ of the AGEING!
Fucking hell ladies, get a hold of this and quit being slaves to ideals which screw you over, time and time again. Who fucking cares if someone wears liner on the inner lid? It's embarrassing.

Oh, and I am a natural blonde with paler lashes and brows. I do wear a smidge of make-up but havent yet begun to punish myself for being pale, or daring to be a 47 yr old woman doing what the fuck I want. I am gonna get older, and am happy to do so. I don't see looking like an old or older woman as remotely negative.

like the farce that was the 'seasalt' thread last week, this shit stinks of shaming and insecurity. I mean who the hell needs to dictate to other women what they should do with their fucking eyeliner?
Whatever you do girls, don't get old!

Why are you so angry?

This is just a light thread with people sharing what they do and some asking for a bit of help. It's hardly the crime of the century.

TheFairPrincess · 19/10/2021 19:29

I'm in my twenties and don't consider it dated. It might not be the on trend look but then if you look at trends like egirl makeup there is definitely still plenty of eyeliner used.

I do it. I like my eye shape and I've never considered it to belong to one particular era to be honest. There are lots of iterations of eyeliner over the century.

Are you another preacher ? Bore off !
BelleOfTheProvince · 19/10/2021 19:54

I've also just remembered one of my university friends digging at my use of eyeliner circa 2007. She did my make up with powder and it looked lovely. I think she was hoping I'd change my method, but obviously I don't have the skills to do the same.

That's why I spent the next ten years always being late for things as I would try and recreate it haha!

I'm tempted by the Charlotte Tilbury cream pencils. They seem a nice compromise. Has anyone else used them?

Eh there are dated make up looks?

The whole point of make up is to enhance your features IMO. As time has passed my make up has only changed as I have learnt to contour etc . Also as I have gotten older I find I can't be bothered to spend time doing my make up

But don't follow trends 🤔

BelleOfTheProvince · 19/10/2021 20:46

Eh there are dated make up looks?

Fondly reminiscing about my first ever make up splurge: baby blue cream eyeshadow and a baby pink lipstick.

I wouldn't recommend but it was fun at the time.

Heather shimmmer anyone?

DameMaureen · 19/10/2021 20:49

Yellow eye shadow in the 1970s.

Schhhteeevie · 19/10/2021 20:51

Heather shimmer 😂

I’ll see your Heather shimmer and up you with “blue hair mascara”

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/10/2021 20:53

You will have to take my eyeliner from my cold, dead hands. I looked at Lisa Eldridge's videos tonight. Nobody seems to have delivered her the memo that eyeliner and clueless crone are now synonymous.

BelleOfTheProvince · 19/10/2021 20:55

Sun in.

Heather shimmer - that takes me back. And blue and green mascara. Constance Carroll make up anyone? My absolute favourite thing, way back when, was Vidal Sassoon shampoo that smelled like almond essence.

Leftbutcameback · 19/10/2021 21:48

@NotMyCat that looks great (you have lovely eyes too). Will give it a go as I've never tried shadow like that before

SlateCoaster · 20/10/2021 00:15

I'm 35 and have been lightly applying light brown eyeliner on my bottom lash line for probably the last 15 or so years 😱. Before that, I used harsh black!

Thank you OP for creating this post - it's been a bit of an eye opener (pun fully intended). I had never realised how this look had likely been aging me all these years. I had actually thought that without the eyeliner my eyes would be less defined and I'd look tired. Tomorrow, I am going to experiment with no eyeliner on my bottom lash line. I will just line my upper waterline and apply mascara.

isthismylifenow · 20/10/2021 08:21

UPDATE.

(from my post yesterday as to doing no eyeliner trial and having a teenager in the house)

Took dd (18) to school this morning. I was going back home before going off on out to clients today. In the car she says to me... 'oh are we running late, are you going to finish your make up when you get back home?...

Grin

So I will be putting on the usual shortly. As I agree, I do look very insipid this morning.

peaceanddove · 20/10/2021 12:41

I'm a fair skinned, ashy blonde so need some definition to my eyes. For daytime I just tight line my upper waterline with a MAC pencil in a dark brown/charcoal shade + mascara on upper lashes.

But if I'm OutOut I also smudge a taupe creme eyeshadow along my lower lash line, with a tiny dab of charcoal shadow in the very outer corner, blended in. It makes my eyes look more tip tilted.

In my experience, people who are genuinely happy in themselves don't feel the need to come onto a forum sounding so strident and militant and dull
BelleOfTheProvince · 20/10/2021 14:05

Off the back of this thread I've bought some pencil eyeshadows to modernise my look. At least that's my excuse. Whoops. Will try a version of @NotMyCat look but for talentless applicators 😅

PurpleDaisies · 20/10/2021 14:06

Off the back of this thread, I’ve realised the last time I bought make up was years ago. I might have some fun having a browse for some new bits.

NotMyCat · 20/10/2021 16:51

The thing is it washes off! Sometimes if I'm trying something new I do it before I'm washing my face at night
I think for the lower lash line I always use two colours so a transition colour to blend it all and a darker shade (so say a taupe and a dark brown or a lilac and a purple) to soften it all and it's usually whatever colours I've used for my transition shade and my crease shade

Onlinedilema · 21/10/2021 04:29

Just reading the posts and yes, I wore green mascara as a youngster. I also tried the pink/purple eyeshadow look with pale pink lipstick. I also remember applying as much blusher as humanly possible. I think the idea was to keep going until you got fed up!

jamdonut · 21/10/2021 17:03

Oh blimey ! I do the inner bottom eyelid ( and have done since my teens!! 😊I’m 57 now!)
I had no idea it was ‘dated’ (but that’s because I’m not hugely hung up on make up) I have very sparse lower eyelashes, and mascara makes them look rubbish, so I always use eyeliner. I only use mascara on top lashes if Im going out somewhere special.

Don’t think I’m going to give up now.
