Dated make up

BelleOfTheProvince · 16/10/2021 22:15

I'm really confused. On another thread people said wearing eyeliner on the undereye was dated. I wear brown or copper normally around halfway across my eye. I don't want to look like a teenager but is this really dated? What do other people do.
(PS I'm low maintenance so no complicated cat eye type things will work for me!)

This thread is making me nostalgic for the late nineties, early noughties. When everyone you knew was not an expert at make up application and we all went out with slightly wonky cats eye liner and clumpy mascara.
It wouldn't cut it today 😂

God, this has been an eye opener, if you'll excuse the pun.

I'm 41 and basically do what you do OP, I use a sort of mid coppery cream eyeshadow on my lid (so much easier than powder by the way, so maybe give it a go if you are rubbish at eyeshadow, so am I and cram is way easier) and then use a brush to line under my eye with it too. If I don't use any under my eye I look a bit odd but I've hardly any lashes there so that might be why? Or maybe it's just how I'm used to seeing myself?

I'm also nostalgic for the 90s when nobody had a clue, everyone wandered around in the wrong coloured maybelline dream matte mousse and we all looked a bit shit. Now everyone looks like a professional and I just don't have the skills or the right eye shape to fanny around with cats eye flicks on morning!

Schhhteeevie · 17/10/2021 13:11

@EdenFlower second one for me too.

BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 13:15

@mistermagpie do you find using cream underneath stays, or does it bleed and get rubbed off throughout the day.

I have very good Charlotte Tilbury cream eyeshadows. I am afraid that if they are out of fashion the only way I would give them up is if you pried them out of my dead cold hands!

I do think "dated" and "unflattering" refer to two very different concepts.
My eyes sort of disappear without under lining them. To the extent that people will say I look tired without it.
Might brave going out today without it and see how it looks!

ladycarlotta · 17/10/2021 13:35

I think for a lot of us who came of age before Youtube was a big thing, we learned makeup technique from magazines or other people and then never changed our habits. Nowadays everyone can watch makeup demos and learn how to do THE LOT. You are not too old to do so yourself!

I like the Vogue 'getting ready' type video series, eg this one of Hilary Duff although there are loads.

Seriously, I'd have a browse on youtube and see what celebrities and vloggers around your own age say they do/use.

NotMyCat · 17/10/2021 13:38

@BelleOfTheProvince

That looks lovely Notmycat. I couldn't do that myself if my life depended on it. Would end up looking like this.
Honestly it's so easy! The under eye bit takes me about 60 seconds
BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 13:45

I'm now wondering if my signature hair do(long layers and highlights) is going to be the new blue rinse.

I doubt it Notmycat, in very retro terms I set off the buckaroo before the game and can't play operation without setting off the buzzer.

DH just offered his opinion. He doesn't care what's in trend he thinks if it looks nice wear it. As long as I leave my eyebrows alone😂

I use the maybelline tattoo one (because I'm poor mainly, I'd love to try expensive cream eye shadows) and it doesn't budge. The shade I use is something 'bronze' though and the texture is really good, I've used the other matte shades and they are much harder to work with.

BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 13:55

I treated myself with the Charlotte Tilbury ones. They also happen to be cruelty free and vegan and that's what I like my make up to be.
I may give it a go this week when I'm not going to be seen by too many people

@NotMyCat

Two different lights but this is what I mean when I do eyeshadow underneath (this is my every day makeup) I like a lot of makeup so I won't apologise for that!
Gorgeous. We have the same colour eyes. I love the eye shadow in the second pic - what is it?
BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 16:02

Do you think I could achieve that look with cream eyeshadow Notmycat? I have two shades so could attempt it..

OP posts:
NotMyCat · 17/10/2021 16:16

@TackyJewellery it's a mix of Anastasia Beverly Hills soft glam palette and a Pat McGrath one

@BelleOfTheProvince I think so! I would apply a tiny amount with a small brush and then buff it with a fluffier brush to soften it

BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 16:19

You lost me at brush haha.

Maybe I will give it a go for the next non toddler night out at the blue moon.

Gosh I’m hopeless when it comes to eye makeup! My make up always looks too bold and I hate it. So should mascara be avoided on lower lashes too?

cashmerecardigans · 17/10/2021 17:38

I just wonder if everyone should do what they want and not worry?
I've worn eyeliner on the waterline since I was 16. Ahead of my wedding day 6 years ago I asked my lovely DSD, who worked on a posh make up counter, if I should change it as it might look really dated . She looked a bit bemused and said why would you do that? No, that's you!
So I stick with it, it makes me feel good, so I'm not too worried.

cashmerecardigans · 17/10/2021 17:38

Ps I'm now 55 Smile

PaulHollywoodsLowHangingFruit · 17/10/2021 17:49

FECK IT- it's classic and no beggar is going to tell me it is dated- if it works it works....

Given the creepy angry birds eyebrows and runway stripes contouring thing - I think I am the best judge of what suits me ta very much ....

BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 18:24

Someone mentioned Kate Middleton upthread... Ive just seen that Meghan wears eyeliner and she looks great.

I much prefer Meghan's style so maybe being in club eyeliner isn't so bad.

I always put a little bit of eyeliner on top and bottom outer edges of my eyes and then smudge a little with a short dense brush. I sometimes apply the eyeshadow over it same colour as i have put on the lid as long as it’s a dark shade. Without this I have no eyes!

JinglingHellsBells · 17/10/2021 18:40

Have you looked at Bobbi Brown long wear cream eye shadow sticks @BelleOfTheProvince

They are easy to use and with care, you could use a little on the lower lashline too.

ufucoffee · 17/10/2021 18:49

I think it depends on your colouring. If you have dark eyes and olive complexion then it could look ok as long as not harsh lines.

BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 18:52

Ah thanks but they aren't a cruelty free company. Realise I'm picky but just prefer CF companies.
I'm not entirely sure still how the end result would be different. My current bronze liner is fairly soft so would be interesting to see if there was a noticeable difference...

OP posts:
BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 18:55

Mousey with blue eyes. In my younger days black looked fairly striking on me, but moved to brown then copper as I got older.

I'm seriously considering asking DH to watch baby whilst I get my lower lashes done on the back of this thread though still not convinced about the eyebrows haha

OP posts:
BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 19:01

and with care

Also just saw this. Not going to happen I'm afraid.

Imagine a toddler trying to stay within the lines. That is the extent of my application skills.
