Dated make up

I'm really confused. On another thread people said wearing eyeliner on the undereye was dated. I wear brown or copper normally around halfway across my eye. I don't want to look like a teenager but is this really dated? What do other people do.
(PS I'm low maintenance so no complicated cat eye type things will work for me!)

I don't do heavy on either, just a dash of colour.
I use a dewy base, a highlighter and blush and very low key lips. Not sure I want to follow the trends as I know what suits me.

But don't want to look instantly aged if you know what I mean.

So personally I made the following changes and I reckon it's taken 5 years off me(!)

  • Proper skincare routine that I researched for my skin type (not expensive as I use The Ordinary primarily)
  • Swapped heavier foundation (Estee Lauder double wear) for a lighter one
  • I now have dark circles that I never had when I was younger so have added in a touch of Becca under eye colour correcter and Nars creamy concealer
  • Have changed where I place blusher / bronzer / concealer slightly (which makes way more difference than I thought it would after watching a few YouTube videos)
  • Stopped wearing eyeliner on lower lash line, sometimes use a little sweep of brown eyeshadow for an evening look
  • Swapped harsh liquid eyeliner for using an eyeliner brush in dark eyeshadow instead for a softer look
  • Got back in to lipsticks and changed to a better mascara (Too Faced Better than Sex)

I've found Andrea Ali to be a great make up artist to watch who focuses on our kind of age group

Agh. I can't stress how awful lipstick looks on me.
Crack handed with shadow, I use cream, so can't make that change either.

Pass the tweezers. I give up!

I don't "wear" eyeliner on the lower lash line, but about halfway through the day it winds up there! I much prefer the naked lower lash look - anyone got any tips on how to keep it on the upper lid? (please don't say liquid liner - my close-to eyesight's not good enough!)

TheCategoryIs · 16/10/2021 23:01

I’ve never been able to wear eyeliner on the bottom lid or waterline, I’m so pale it looks very harsh and punk like and makes my eyes more closed in so they look smaller and always ends up smudged. I think plenty of women on TV wear bottom lash liner/eyeshadow for definition.

Classica · 16/10/2021 23:03

It all depends on how heavily its applied and how well it's blended in. I blend some coppery eyeshadow under my lower lashline.

BelleOfTheProvince · 16/10/2021 23:09

@mynameiscalypso

This is the only way I've ever been able to do eyeliner and it's taken me 20 years to get to this stage. Very disappointed to learn that it's now dated.
Yes. I dare not ask about the gloss reference 😅

This bothers me too. I suit eyeliner under my bottom lash line but i knots aging.

I look weird without it! I put mascara on bottom lashes too..,,

BelleOfTheProvince · 16/10/2021 23:17

Yes too to the lashes. I'm mousey dishwater blonde. I do well with a bit of definition.

I don't usually wear lipstick, it doesn't suit me, but I've recently found a great lip liner that's the same shade as my lips. I use it to line them, as my lips look a bit fuzzy, then use tinted vaseline. It's made quite a bit of difference.

I've seen a lot of people demonstrate how to use mascara on lower lashes but I just can't do that! Think it would be good to open my eyes up.

StormyCornishSeas · 16/10/2021 23:27

I always wear a pencil eyeliner on my bottom eye lid. Only if I'm doing full on make up do I do my top eye lid Confused

StormyCornishSeas · 16/10/2021 23:27

Rarely wear lipstick worried it will show up my far from pearly white teeth up

EdenFlower · 16/10/2021 23:28

I'm very pale with fair lashes. I need definition along the lash lines as otherwise eyes look like two piss holes in the snow Grin

I use a taupe shadow to do this and tightl-ine the top lashes to make them look longer and add definition with a black liner before my mascara. I keep brows natural and define with a taupe brow colour- has to be ashy- no hint of warmth as hair is cool toned.

At 48 with downturned eyes the cat eye black liner is really not for me- trendy or otherwise.

EdenFlower · 16/10/2021 23:31

To me, liner on the bottom lid only is very ageing and dated. I would always pull it up at the corner and across the outer corner of the upper eyelid to give a balanced look.

Leftbutcameback · 16/10/2021 23:34

@StormyCornishSeas apparently the secret is a blue base lipstick (like a colder colour pink). I always think of my teeth as an average colour (not bright white but not yellow) but red lipstick looks awful!!

ShrikeAttack · 16/10/2021 23:35

I don't wear eyeliner anymore. Either a nude eyeshadow with quite pronounced lips, or an ombre smudged eyeshadow with dark shadow pushed into the roots of my eyelashes and glossy lips.

OR nude all over with a soft brown on the water line of the upper lids.

All work well.

bizboz · 16/10/2021 23:39

I do it as well, although use a brown or dark grey rather than black these days. I tried not doing it for a bit when I read that it could be aging but my eyes seem to look much older without it. I do it mainly on the outer third and only with a pencil. It makes me feel better even if other people don't like it!

Jasmine11 · 16/10/2021 23:39

It depends a lot on your eye colour and general colouring too, I think ~ this look doesn't look quite so dated on people with darker eyes and colouring for some reason.

wheresmymojo · 16/10/2021 23:41

I think this is a good pic of how eyeliner on the bottom lash line is ageing

Dated make up
Classica · 16/10/2021 23:43

But that's really poorly applied eyeliner

GreyGoose1980 · 16/10/2021 23:49

I think eyeliner on the bottom lash line does look a bit dated. I find it look ageing on me too.

If you can get to the point of mastering eye shadow (to help - a good quality brush and palette) you can then use an eyeshadow, applied with a cotton bud, on your lower lash line. A bit less harsh than eyeliner. But still gives some definition.
skybluee · 16/10/2021 23:57

I think that image has been doctored - the colour is a lot warmer on the side that's meant to look younger, and harsher/cooler on the other side. It's not comparing like with like IMO at all.

ChristieMalry · 17/10/2021 00:04

Agree that image isn't evenly shot but liner on the lower eye is dated. Have a look at make up tutorials on YouTube OP.
