Dated make up

I'm really confused. On another thread people said wearing eyeliner on the undereye was dated. I wear brown or copper normally around halfway across my eye. I don't want to look like a teenager but is this really dated? What do other people do.
(PS I'm low maintenance so no complicated cat eye type things will work for me!)

I only line tops and put it under lash line itms

Coronilla · 17/10/2021 19:15

I've been pondering this for a while too. I've used dark eyeshadow to line top and bottom for years. I assumed it 'opened my eyes up', but this thread inspired me to google this, and the images in the following blog have totally changed my mind. I think they look so much fresher without bottom liner. It's a revelation!

See, looking at that I'm torn. I think initially that the one without liner looks unfinished and highlights creases. The liner one looks more dramatic. Then I look more and think the no liner one looks more fresh. And obviously it's another dark liner example. Most people on the thread have cited taupe, bronze, copper and grey so it's difficult to know what the difference is.

I think perhaps the reality is that liner works really well in some situations: evening, photos, part of smokey eye and less in others: daywear, natural look.

I ditched it today and looked at it in my phone camera. Every time I caught a glimpse it looked as though I was going make up free. I looked a bit tired too(though that could just be the effects of a toddler at play)

Jury's still out...

Oh dear; very dated and aging!

Anonymice1 · 17/10/2021 20:55

Weird how it’s only women who feel they don’t look good enough without makeup, and men look just fine the way they are.

People say that about skincare though and I see men with skin and hands that could do with some moisturiser and SPF!

I will happily go out without makeup but it's fun - I like applying it, trying new things, making myself look different, being able to cover up if I'm tired or ill or have a giant spot

TheVolturi · 17/10/2021 21:08

Tomorrow I am going to try and fully ditch the bottom liner. I am crap at top liner so will have to be just mascara. I think if I go cold turkey for a week I may get used to seeing myself with semi naked eyes! Will report back.

My husband had a big spot today. He'd definitely have used some concealer if social convention allowed it. Equally he doesn't think I need make up, have gone make-up free for a year. Sadly, my skin stayed crap so I wear some now.

I think eyeliner looks hard and cold. During lockdown I stopped wearing makeup, and now just wear mascara on my eyes and it seems a lot to me. Ditched the eyeliner completely

PeriChristmas · 17/10/2021 21:21

My god I haven't done this since the 80's!

TackyJewellery · 17/10/2021 21:23

After reading this thread this morning I decided to go the whole day without bottom ‘liner’ (smudged taupe eye pencil usually).

I just feel like I don’t look like me. I don’t look as ‘pretty’. I feel like it made me washed out and tired looking. Maybe the problem is that I have incredibly fair eyelashes and without anything at all to give them some definition, my eyes just look too naked.

BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 21:26

Yes I have fair lashes too so that could be part of it.

I assure you I was doing it as a teen in the mid 00s. As we're my friends. A poster made the valid point upthread that those of us over 25ish grew up in the pre YouTube era. Our make up arsenal was handed down from mother's, through peers and limited magazine tutorials.

So it is understandable if we are less well versed in makeup or haven't constantly updated.

Surely what makes your eye look nice doesn't change every ten years or so.

Tailendofsummer · 17/10/2021 22:22

I've been reading the link to the woman trying out no liner - she has this photo as her new, no liner look - this is what I look like with liner! (Obviously I don't mean I look as young or pretty as she does, but that's what my eye looks like!)

I don't think there is any one hard and fast rule. What suits one person may not suit another. But I think heavy make up can be ageing on anyone, and a softer line is more flattering.

Aderyn21 · 18/10/2021 07:07

That woman definitely seems to have something on her bottom lids. I like a soft kohl or shadow line in grey/brown. There's a big difference between soft and subtle definition and a thick black kohl line.

PiscesSt · 18/10/2021 07:56

I think a solid line all under the eye looks dated. A line halfway that is soft/smudged doesn’t. Also brown is a lot softer than black. It does depend on eye shaoe/colour but I think something under the eye looks better than left bare, definitely on myself.

Diadora30 · 18/10/2021 14:04

Does anyone still use the white liner for the lower line? I remember this was one of the top tricks in the 90s to make eyes appear more open.

I partake in tight lining when I’m not feeling squeamish and that really makes a subtle difference without looking harsh or dated.

I’m enjoying the Heather shimmer revival though!

TheVolturi · 18/10/2021 14:14

I've gone without today, doesn't feel too bad, although I do think it looks a bit bare, I need to try using top liner, it always looks messy when I try.

I was still doing this in the teenies 😅

BelleOfTheProvince · 18/10/2021 14:20

@TheVolturi I think it looks fresh on you, but you do get away with it because your lashes are nice and long.

My stumpies can't carry the show on their own.

I use eye pencil just to make my lower lash line look like yours in this pic!
TheVolturi · 18/10/2021 14:44

Really? It looks totally naked to me! Maybe I have been using way too much liner or too dark now that I'm older. I'm going to stick with it for a week or so and see what I think. My lashes aren't that long without mascara and my eyebrows are ones of the 90s and never recovered!
