Dated make up

I'm really confused. On another thread people said wearing eyeliner on the undereye was dated. I wear brown or copper normally around halfway across my eye. I don't want to look like a teenager but is this really dated? What do other people do.
(PS I'm low maintenance so no complicated cat eye type things will work for me!)

I don't really get how shadow can be that different to line though.
I mean, a liquid or even pencil black, sure I get that.
But my copper imo achieves the same thing as a shadow would if I were less clumsy and more competent with powder.

Interestingly, at a wedding recently, the bride and her sisters were all wearing eyeliner (soft and not black) on their lower lids - all are early 30s, very fashionable and one works for a major cosmetics company.

JinglingHellsBells · 17/10/2021 10:32

I don't find it hard to use powder eye shadow with a skinny brush. Just make sure you load the brush with enough powder, then hold your under-eyelid tight with one hand while you apply

You get a softer line than with a crayon.

I use Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner pencil and it's really a bit too thick on the end.

I asked the assts a while back if lower lash liner was dated and they said No. This was during a tutorial.

Redredwiney · 17/10/2021 10:36

I wear black eyeliner on my lower waterline. I start from around a third of my waterline to the end. I have dark hair and eyes and it compliments my features. If that makes me dated so be it, but it works well on me and I’m not going to stop!

BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 10:43

I really can't stress enough how I can't apply powder. I've had 20 years practice. Sadly no brush or sponge can cure clumsy.(Toddler grabbing legs also would add to oops moments now, and I couldn't even manage it before when I didn't have this little jolter! ;) )

I totally agree. I used a little bit of shadow today and it looks exactly the same as when I use a bit of liner. I only ever use brown pencil eyeliner and smudge it a bit.
BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 10:49

@Redredwiney just like to express my envy. I've always had blonde in my hair, balayage at the moment so hopefully not too dated, but who knows.
I'd love, love love to pull off a dark brunette, but the darkest I can go is mouse brown. So not dramatic!

My dd 16 uses liner under her eyes

EdenFlower · 17/10/2021 11:01

And looking at the image shared earlier of the model with eye lined underhand the other just above; i can see how it lifts the eye without in underneath, but the eye lined underneath- however baby done looks larger and more open.

Andreeali has a great YouTube tutorial on make up for older women.

I think there are no hard and fast rules because what works for one person doesn't necessarily for someone else. That said, wearing less make up and lighter formulations, etc as you get older is more youthful. Powders tend to settle into the tiny creases of your skin in a way creams and gels don't, which means powders, especially anything which isn't matte, emphasises them.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 17/10/2021 11:25

@SquirrelFan

I don't "wear" eyeliner on the lower lash line, but about halfway through the day it winds up there! I much prefer the naked lower lash look - anyone got any tips on how to keep it on the upper lid? (please don't say liquid liner - my close-to eyesight's not good enough!)

I picked up a gel eyeliner pencil at Aldi (not liquid, I can't cope with them either) which has fantastic staying power, and I'm normally Queen of the Panda Eyes.

EdenFlower · 17/10/2021 11:25

So I tried it just now- one with just dark brown eyeshadow on top lid only and one with shadow smudged under lower lashes like I usually do. What’s the verdict? Excuse my wrinkly old eyes- I am 48!

@EdenFlower I actually like both
But I think lower lash line and waterline is absolutely great as long as it's not a black harsh not smudged line!

Angrynellie · 17/10/2021 11:45

This is all too hard Blush.
Honestly OP if you feel like your eyes need it, maybe just continue to do it in copper but just very lightly??
I’ve only just got into highlighter too as I like the glowiness- what’s being used now instead of highlighter and blush?
@EdenFlower I do prefer the second one as it’s more natural, but honestly I think both look nice.

BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 11:56

I think they both look good. I'm still not convinced a soft grey, brown, copper is the same as a harsh black line.

If you do it with a light hand and not black, dark brown etc it actually brightens the area a bit.

I use a Bobbi brown dark green, stila one (sort of greenish) and a Rimmel one which is metallic copper.

Using apricot/peach or nude eyeliner in inner rim makes you look awake.

Using a thick line of black/dark brown eyeliner there does look dated.

WeAreTheHeroes · 17/10/2021 12:05

@EdenFlower I like both. I'd do the undereye line for evening/a more made up look and without for more casual.

NotMyCat · 17/10/2021 12:14

Two different lights but this is what I mean when I do eyeshadow underneath (this is my every day makeup)
I like a lot of makeup so I won't apologise for that!

I second or third Ali Andreea for modern yet flattering makeup techniques.

I use Glossier's Cloud paint is great for adding a flush of colour on the cheeks rather than a traditional blusher.

DameMaureen · 17/10/2021 12:19

I watched a couple of this girl's videos ( think someone on here recommended her ) and was particularly struck by the eyebrow one . I really think this is a key to not looking dated too .

EdenFlower · 17/10/2021 12:24

@NotMyCat Do you just use shadow for your look or is there some eyeliner on there as well- it looks great BTW!

NotMyCat · 17/10/2021 12:34

Eyeliner only on the top waterline, everything else is eyeshadow

Bluntness100 · 17/10/2021 12:35

@EdenFlower I think the second one with nothing underneath is better and more youthful

BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 12:56

That looks lovely Notmycat.
I couldn't do that myself if my life depended on it. Would end up looking like this.
