Dated make up

I'm really confused. On another thread people said wearing eyeliner on the undereye was dated. I wear brown or copper normally around halfway across my eye. I don't want to look like a teenager but is this really dated? What do other people do.
(PS I'm low maintenance so no complicated cat eye type things will work for me!)

I'm 29 and I do it. It's not dated, it's just not for everyone. Charlotte Tilbury does it on various models, Kate Middleton still does it etc. I know various teens who like it.

EdenFlower · 23/10/2021 12:25

Just used eyeshadow to define eye today and tightlined the upper lashes…?

EdenFlower · 23/10/2021 12:28

I have gone without anything under the lower lashes for most of the week- it makes my eyes seem smaller and older in my opinion- especially with not having nice think lower lashes like some women have to frame their eyes. So have concluded I need something!

Tailendofsummer · 23/10/2021 12:29

I think that looks lovely. How long will the under eye shadow stay there? I am suspecting it would not be long on me!

GalaPie · 23/10/2021 12:45

I've weaned myself off this by using a felt tip style liner with a really fine point and moving from an actual line to a series of tiny dots.
I need something as I don't use mascara anymore, I've tried so many brands but they all irritate my eyes and look clumpy. I think my eyes changed as I got older - wouldn't be seen without when I was younger.

peaceanddove · 23/10/2021 13:40

Eden have you used shadow on your upper lid and eye socket too?

NotMyCat · 23/10/2021 14:56

I like that @EdenFlower
Same here, shadow and lined upper waterline
Really need to do my eyebrows!

Tailendofsummer · 23/10/2021 15:43

I use a brown pencil under my eye and it basically looks like that photo (with extra lines and bags in my case) so I feel empowered to keep going!

EdenFlower · 23/10/2021 17:07

@peaceanddove

Eden have you used shadow on your upper lid and eye socket too?
Yes, I used a light grey on the crease, then a darker grey on the outer corner and under lashine and then a paler peachy satin on the inner half of the lid. It looks a bit darker in reality- the photo seems to wash it out a bit.

It lasts most of the day under the bottom lashes, but I do find the shadow on the outer corner, where the botton and top lids meets disappears quickly, and I end up with a little gap there, especially if my eyes water at all (which they nearly always do!) I have to keep touching it up! Eyeliner does the same on me though so no difference really.

Im 41 next month...I'll see myself out Grin

BelleOfTheProvince · 23/10/2021 19:07

@NC6789012 I actually like cats eye liner.
Never been able to do it well myself so impressed by those who can.

I think it looks classic and classy(but clearly as over 30 I am WRONG!)

This thread has made me realise I know nothing at all about applying make up. I’m inspired to look at the you tubes and see if I can’t come late to the party!!

Ps I don’t wear bottom (eye) liner but seem to look like I am anyway with some weird colouring thing, so am doomed.

PiscesSt · 24/10/2021 20:45

I used eyeshadow (urban decay cherry palette) today and to finish and line the eyes I used a damp brush on a darker shade, and applied it to outer “v” of my eyes and lined bottom of eye half way. It looked nice and was all still there after a long hot shopping trip! amazed.

BelleOfTheProvince · 24/10/2021 20:53

Well my Charlotte Tilbury pencils came(I blame this thread for the splurge)
I used them instead of my usual eyeliner and whilst they are pretty, I can't say it makes a massive difference in the overall look.
If I had used regular eyeshadow it would have looked similar but with more faff and mess.

Have concluded eyeliner is not necessarily the aging evil it's been painted as, but will use lighter colours to lift the eye (and that browbone highlight tip too)

But Vogue says it’s fine in 2021 www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.vogue.fr/beauty-tips/article/eye-makeup-trends-2021/amp

tappitytaptap · 24/10/2021 22:36

@wheresmymojo

So personally I made the following changes and I reckon it's taken 5 years off me(!)
  • Proper skincare routine that I researched for my skin type (not expensive as I use The Ordinary primarily)
  • Swapped heavier foundation (Estee Lauder double wear) for a lighter one
  • I now have dark circles that I never had when I was younger so have added in a touch of Becca under eye colour correcter and Nars creamy concealer
  • Have changed where I place blusher / bronzer / concealer slightly (which makes way more difference than I thought it would after watching a few YouTube videos)
  • Stopped wearing eyeliner on lower lash line, sometimes use a little sweep of brown eyeshadow for an evening look
  • Swapped harsh liquid eyeliner for using an eyeliner brush in dark eyeshadow instead for a softer look
  • Got back in to lipsticks and changed to a better mascara (Too Faced Better than Sex)
@wheresmymojo what did you swop doublewear for? I bloody love it and haven’t found anything I like more but sometimes wonder if it’s a bit heavy….
bellamountain · 24/10/2021 23:01

OP in exactly the same position as you, also with a toddler and time is of the essence. I heard about the lower lash eyeliner a while back and how ageing black is and to instead go for a brown. I've been doing that for a few months and now hear not to wear eyeliner at all and instead use an eyeshadow under the eyes. A light brown eye shadow does actually look good so gets the vote from me and has allowed me to ditch the eyeliner. It's the rest of my makeup style that needs updating now because I'm far too heavy on the blush and face powder....!!! Otherwise I look like I've just got out of bed.

Some good/helpful posts on this thread.

wetpants · 25/10/2021 13:30

Finally one thing I’ve got right all along Grin

I’m 49 and have never put liner or mascara on the lower lid/lashes/waterline. I’ve occasionally experimented with it but always thought it made my eyes look squinty and quite harsh overall. I have big eyes but still thought using a liner made them look smaller rather than enhance their shape. Just using a soft liner and mascara on the top made me look more wide eyed and fresh.

@musicforsnorks

All seems innocent enough, but on a website which generally encourages feminism or at the very least, female autonomy and confidence threads such as these a really confusing.

Page after page of women, pass-aggressively shaming other women for a little bit of colour on their face or eyes, that has to be done a certain way to avoid the dreaded TERRORZ of the AGEING!
Fucking hell ladies, get a hold of this and quit being slaves to ideals which screw you over, time and time again. Who fucking cares if someone wears liner on the inner lid? It's embarrassing.

Oh, and I am a natural blonde with paler lashes and brows. I do wear a smidge of make-up but havent yet begun to punish myself for being pale, or daring to be a 47 yr old woman doing what the fuck I want. I am gonna get older, and am happy to do so. I don't see looking like an old or older woman as remotely negative.

like the farce that was the 'seasalt' thread last week, this shit stinks of shaming and insecurity. I mean who the hell needs to dictate to other women what they should do with their fucking eyeliner?
Whatever you do girls, don't get old!
We love our faux-feminism and girl power but are here, online, teaching our daughters to fucking loathe themselves.

Oh my goodness you sound absolutely ridiculous.
Boscoforever · 25/10/2021 18:50

Cam22 Agreed!

Lndnmummy · 25/10/2021 19:39

I tint my lower lashes for definition. I do it at home. Much softer than eyeliner/mascara on lower lashes.

Just spotted this on John Lewis ...

MidnightMeltdown · 04/11/2021 19:36

I gave up eyeliner altogether about 15 years ago. I may decide to wear it about 2 - 3 times a year, but it hasn't been an everyday item for me since I was a teenager.

rosiebl · 04/11/2021 21:56

@tappitytaptap I agree about Doublewear. I actually switched to doublewear light and it's so much better. It's also worth checking your shade again because mine was somehow darker.
