What age is Seasalt aimed at?

I went shopping for a coat today and the lady is my local boutique was trying to convince me that most school mums wear Seasalt coats and Seasalt is great for my needs (warm, stylish, waterproof).

She seemed abit put out when I mentioned I felt Seasalt were too old for me and I felt their target market is late 40s plus.

What age would you say Seasalt is aimed at?

I wondered how long it would be before Toast is mentioned . What would you say the image is @Maireas ?

Craftycorvid · 12/10/2021 16:36

@Maireas - I wear lots of Toast too! I was making some tongue-in-cheek observations about the style - absolutely generalising in the process! Smile

CSJobseeker · 12/10/2021 16:39

I've never looked at Toast before, but looked at their website when CraftyCorvid mentioned it and I thought 'austere novelist' was a reasonably fair description of the look!

It's the knitwear, checked dresses that don't seem to go in much at the waist, and the relatively minimalist cut of the clothes, coupled with the way they style their models (hair etc.). You might not personally wear those particular items, or look like those models, but the website does give that overall impression.

There's nothing wrong with an austere novelist though!

Maireas · 12/10/2021 16:39

Oh, I see! Craftycorvid!
Although it could be worse than a 20s austere novelist, to be fair, so I'll take that!
Bear in mind I wore one of their green skirts today with a fairisle jumper and a pair of brogues...😉

Maireas · 12/10/2021 16:41

I'm taking it as a compliment, @CSJobseeker! I do like a bit of a minimalist look.

CSJobseeker · 12/10/2021 16:43

The fact is, pretty much all clothing brands market themselves in a certain way to try to appeal to a customers who want to emulate a specific 'look'. Whether that's quirky / austere novelist / arty seaside-dweller / funky clubber / boho / whatever.

Toast could market the same clothes but with very 'glam' models posed to look sexy, and it would be a different look again.

Now that is very austere novelist.

But then I'm wearing a fairisle jumper right now, and also wear brogues.

Peggytheredhen · 12/10/2021 16:45

I would probably prefer to look like an austere novelist than a yoga going, pot throwing middle class person living in a naice town by the sea, but I sadly can't afford Toast prices, so I'll have to stick to pottery Wink

CSJobseeker · 12/10/2021 16:46

I am very landlocked, so would love to live by the sea. I'll pass on the pottery though.

Maireas · 12/10/2021 16:48

@CSJobseeker - great minds!
@Peggytheredhen - pottery is a great hobby. Please make sure your pottery outfit is fully Seasalt....

CSJobseeker · 12/10/2021 16:50

If this lady isn't an austere novelist, I don't know who is! Grin

Although she admittedly appears to be doing something mysterious with walnuts rather than writing a book.

I'm 48 and have a seasalt Janelle coat for school playground duty- it's very generic and black so fairly ageless. I wouldn't personally wear their clothes though- they look quite 'frumpy' for want of a better word- it reminds me walof Whitestuff and Fatface which I find the same sort of style- the colours in these shops give them away- it's all maroon, olive green and teal. I imagine women who dress in this style enjoy chunky colourful shoes, do crafts, grow their own veg and work in a job where they have a good income but caring- like citizens advice, educational psychology, a library, or a local art gallery.

Peggytheredhen · 12/10/2021 17:01

@CSJobseeker I expect she is about to rustle up a quick walnut tart for some existential writer friends.

I'm actually thinking of getting that blouse! I'm running low on walnuts, too.
Chocolatier9 · 12/10/2021 17:53

It’s weird and awful how you can think you’re unique and mysterious and no-one can really tell much about you and then you find out that what you think of as your dark, plain, comfortable, don’t-look-at-me way of dressing is really shouting to the entire world your most secret wish to be an arty bluestocking - or as others might say an austere novelist…😧

MissEmmaWoodhouse · 12/10/2021 18:49

I have a similar dress to this, but with large dots on it. I wear it with DMs.

What am I? Frumpy? Mad pixie?

Craftycorvid · 12/10/2021 19:06

I’ve started something here! Grin. ‘Austere novelist chic’ - no bad thing in my view.

@MissEmmaWoodhouse I love a dotty dress and DM combo’ myself.

MissEmmaWoodhouse · 12/10/2021 19:16

Thanks. The dress is almost like the one in the link but was from a couple of years ago. The boots are the non-Toast version of the Toast Dora boots.

Name changed lest someone IRL recognises the outfit.

Pigtailsandall · 12/10/2021 19:20

@Craftycorvid I love your austere novelist chic. I like Toast, but think the pricing is ridiculous. However, whenever I look at the photos of the website I think of Virginia Woolf.
I also looked at seasalt again and I think what I really don't like is the prints - too distinguishable I think.

DameMaureen · 12/10/2021 19:21

You are certainly not having much fun in the bedroom with Toast 😜

What age is Seasalt aimed at?
Craftycorvid · 12/10/2021 19:25

Nope. I think Toast couples sit looking at each other mournfully whilst doing something incomprehensible with walnuts!

Classica · 12/10/2021 19:26

If I had to go in the witness protection program I'd wear Toast clothes.

MissEmmaWoodhouse · 12/10/2021 19:38

I don't think the pricing is ridiculous. Good clothes are expensive.
They are not within my price range but my price range is 2nd hand

Fashion has gone a bit weird. All those long high collar dresses, tank tops etc.

MsAnnFrope · 12/10/2021 20:06

@DameMaureen she’s hiding her leather kink gear under those PJs. That’s what austere 1920s novelist do. So I’m told ahem

DameMaureen · 12/10/2021 20:14

I think she needs big baggy ones to take her walnuts to bed?
