What age is Seasalt aimed at?

I went shopping for a coat today and the lady is my local boutique was trying to convince me that most school mums wear Seasalt coats and Seasalt is great for my needs (warm, stylish, waterproof).

She seemed abit put out when I mentioned I felt Seasalt were too old for me and I felt their target market is late 40s plus.

What age would you say Seasalt is aimed at?

39, love my seasalt coats and carefully selected tops and dresses. Don’t have kids so I’m not that demographic! They use nice quality fabrics, fit well, last well, flattering and sizing goes up for larger sizes (16) which Cos, Zara, Reiss etc REALLY aren’t!
I think I have a look, not high fashion perhaps but who cares! Some really judgy people on here, and ageist too. I would hope that most emotionally mature people grew out of that mentality in their 20s but clearly not! You stick to your thing, leave the Seasalt, Fatface etc to the rest of us.

Berkeys · 11/10/2021 10:41

@SirChenjins

but it's not sexy

Oh NO!!! Heaven forbid women aren’t looking their very best sexy at all times 🙄

The great thing about looking stylish is that it’s not prescriptive. Wear what you like and wear it with confidence - that’s what makes someone sexy (if that’s really your bag) and stylish.

This! Also the most stylish people I know are not afraid of a brand because they saw an older person wear something from it once. That to me shows a lack of creativity and a bit of a follow the herd mentality.

I had a blouse a long time ago and i saw Pat Butcher wear it on Eastenders . I never wore it again . A coat I had about 5 years ago was ruined for me as Yasmeen in Corrie was wearing it 😂

Berkeys · 11/10/2021 10:54

Also, I cannot think of anything more frumpy than Lucy & Yak, which loads of my younger friends adore.

DameMaureen · 11/10/2021 11:04

I've just read all of the thread - my lashing will no doubt come for referring to two characters in soaps - will I be accused of fatism, earringism, racism, classism, restaurantism, hookerism, ageism, northernism, eastlondonism and of course all internalised 🙄 . I really hate how all these preachers come in and ruin a thread like this - the smug little comments eg " as you were " as if we are children and would agree with them if only we knew better , reporting people for using the word "frumpy " . Some of you must have really miserable lives if that all you can do is go around looking for offence in other people's words especially on S and B .

SirChenjins · 11/10/2021 11:04

Lucy and Yak does have a certain vibe to it…Grin I really like their diverse range of models though.

No you won’t, your post wasn’t worth it.
DameMaureen · 11/10/2021 11:06

@SirChenjins oooh I am so upset .....😂

SirChenjins · 11/10/2021 11:08

Oooh I am so upset you’re upset

DameMaureen · 11/10/2021 11:19

The thing with all clothing is that they do have a customer in mind whether that is an age or a lifestyle . No one launches a business without a customer target in mind . Several brands merge together in this respect eg White Stuff , Seasalt, Mistral , Brakeburn, Joules to name a few - they are all selling the same "life " . Some people encompass that "life image "when younger but there is definitely a certain age of customer that you see in certainly Seasalt and White Stuff and it's not under 50s ( well at least not where I live ) . Other brands often mentioned on here like Toast, Popsy and Lucy and Yak also have certain images they sell . Some like , some think frumpy . It's great to have the choice !

I don't use the word 'frumpy', but yes, Lucy & Yak definitely does have a certain 'vibe'!

Tbh, I think of Lucy & Yak (and similar brands) as being a sort of 'quirky cutesy ditzy pixie dream-girl' style. Not the look I aim for as an adult woman.

CSJobseeker · 11/10/2021 11:32

This thread is throwing up brands I've never looked at before, so it's widening my horizons at least!

I am not a fashionista though. My main priorities are natural fibres, quality/sustainability, colours that suit me, and classic practical pieces that I'll be able to wear for at least a decade. I spend most of my time outside cities, so things that I can wear with boots in the mud are always a plus!

I don't buy clothes often, but my recent purchases have been from ERIBÉ, Finisterre, Two Thirds, Celtic & Co & Levis.

Classica · 11/10/2021 11:38

I happily use the word frumpy, don't get all the angst about it. But then I don't think it's an ageist term.

Luck and Yak stuff reminds me of Rod, Jane and Freddy or other 1980s kids’ TV faves. I'd use 'twee' for them rather than frumpy.

Classica · 11/10/2021 11:41

.

What age is Seasalt aimed at?
CSJobseeker · 11/10/2021 11:44

It's the ridiculous bows to fasten the dungaree straps that get me.

I will happily wear a dungaree dress, but with a normal fastening for grown-ups, not a fucking bow!

FredaFox · 11/10/2021 11:50

I have 2 coats, I'm not a mum but they are great winter or wet weather coats. If you like it buy it

WhoppingBigBackside · 11/10/2021 11:51

It's a knot not a bow on mine and I love them.

Georgewontsleepnow · 11/10/2021 12:05

Half the mums in my kids playground have Seasalt coats. Oh so good at keeping one warm and dry! Most of us are comfortably under 40 too. I wouldn't say we are a fashionable bunch though.

Anordinarymum · 11/10/2021 12:06

@Enough4me

Is edgy the new 'crazy, mental, wild' ? For people who think they're unique but are really just normal but trying hard?
I think 'edgy' means unstylish
Pigtailsandall · 11/10/2021 12:09

Reading this thread you'd think only Sea salt do a warm, waterproof coat. Personally I'm not keen on anything that seems this popular, regardless of its attributes

BeyondMyWits · 11/10/2021 12:29

Where I live seems a different demographic to some. The mums in the playground round here wear Primark.

UniBallEye · 11/10/2021 12:31

This thread is so ageist and bitchy, it makes very depressing reading.
I have read the whole thing and even after PAGES of people saying who cares what anyone else wears, we all have our own idea of what looks good, we still have women putting others down simply because of what they wear.

The latest comments about someone defining themselves as 'edgy' being a heinous crime (apparently); the sneering people wearing Lucy and Yak etc etc it's pretty sad.

I would like us all to wear whatever the hell we like and that makes us feel good and for us not to be so harshly judged by other women!

There are LOADS of styles / brands / looks that I personally wouldn't wear but I can absolutely accept that someone else can wear it with aplomb and look and feel amazing in it. That's the beauty of life surely, we're all different

Classica · 11/10/2021 12:41

I wish people wouldn't take mild criticism of a brand as an attack on those who wear the brand. So dramatic.

Classica · 11/10/2021 12:42

I genuinely could not give a fuck if someone says they hate a particular brand that I love or a look that I love.

pontiouspilates · 11/10/2021 12:46

I'd say 45+.
