What age is Seasalt aimed at?

ChampagneWorries · 08/10/2021 21:11

I went shopping for a coat today and the lady is my local boutique was trying to convince me that most school mums wear Seasalt coats and Seasalt is great for my needs (warm, stylish, waterproof).

She seemed abit put out when I mentioned I felt Seasalt were too old for me and I felt their target market is late 40s plus.

What age would you say Seasalt is aimed at?

Mine’s in Jade. I’m only 5’ 1” so it’s a bit longer on me than in the photo - can’t wait to wear it

DameMaureen · 11/10/2021 14:45

Now you see this is how fashion changes over the years - things that were considered old fashioned are suddenly fashionable again eg . Teva type sandals beloved of hiking men , Birkenstocks beloved by chefs and fair isle jumpers as worn and knitted by my Mum . They were so tight at the neck you couldn't get your head through 😁

SirChenjins · 11/10/2021 14:58

Oh I remember those well - and the itchy necks from all the wool! 😂

Sooverthemill · 11/10/2021 15:29

@SirChenjins

Is it one of the Fairisle ones? I have absolutely fallen in love with mine - it’s gorgeous (well I love it) Smile
I have one of those! Bought in the summer and so far only worn once as it's not been cold enough. I got it from stoned and waisted who have a lovely collection of brands.
SirChenjins · 11/10/2021 17:54

I’ve just had a look at Stoned and Waisted, I hadn’t heard of them, but their stuff is lovely 😊

Sooverthemill · 11/10/2021 17:55

@SirChenjins it is. Almost too lovely. Also look at Gather and See. I must not look for a while

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/10/2021 18:33

I bought a Janelle because I could get it 50% off. It's definitely not the most flattering thing I've ever worn but it is warm and keeps me bone dry on a rainy night off to the pub (or whatever). And sometimes, that's absolutely enough. I see plenty of 'youngsters' around here wearing big duvet coats in similar weather. They might be younger, or slimmer or more beautiful than I am and their hair might not be grey, but there's really not that much difference between their big, long, puffy coats and my Janelle.

myheartskippedabeat · 11/10/2021 22:26

I'm 41 and do buy some staples there like the leggings and trousers and plain cardigans and linen items as the quality is amazing
Some of the prints aren't really my thing but my step-daughter who is 20'id a leggings convert
Nothing worse than cheap see thru horrible leggings

Enough4me · 11/10/2021 22:34

@myheartskippedabeat yes definitely worth paying more for nice stretchy non-transparent leggings. Thanks for recommendation, I'll look out for them in SS next sale.

Having just seen the TV ad’ for Seasalt, I’d say it confirms my impression of the brand as being aimed at a certain ‘very arty lady who lives somewhere vair naice, possibly by the sea, but definitely involving pot throwing, yoga and psychotherapy as lifestyle choices’

  • kinda ‘Toast’ but with somewhat more acceptance of the fact it sometimes rains in this country and not everyone likes Toast’s prices or austere 1920s novelist look. Age is possibly relevant as the arty seaside vibe isn’t usually worn by younger women in my experience but by women who’ve decided to happily embrace a certain vibe. I’m firmly in that age bracket (and aspire to parts of that lifestyle) but I’m not a huge fan of Seasalt clothing, but do like the tees and the occasional raincoat.
lollipoprainbow · 12/10/2021 08:02

Clearly not me judging by the dirty look I received when I walked into one at the weekend ! I'm 47 and fat so that's probably not their target market !!

SirChenjins · 12/10/2021 08:17

I suspect that you were just unfortunate enough to come across a rude sales assistant/s - we’ll all had them sadly, across a range of shops.

TrainforSpeed · 12/10/2021 08:18

They sell maternity clothes. The target market can't be that old!

shallIswim · 12/10/2021 08:19

I live in the heart of Seasalt Country and I'd say anyone from late twenties as long as they're a mum..
I swear bu their warm waterproofs, but at 55 really don't like their distinctive prints. But I don't like Joules either

Carboncheque · 12/10/2021 10:18

I’ve never been into one of their shops but lots of their stuff goes up to a size 28. They may have snotty assistants but the brand is size inclusive.

DuchessOfSausage · 12/10/2021 10:21

My local shop has nice assistants.

Great range of sizes and nice good quality clothes. Not all are printed and lots of the stock isn't the typical patterned tunic or dress that is typically seasalt.

GreenTuftyFlowers · 12/10/2021 14:08

Yes the size inclusivity is great.

CuteGirlsWatchMeEatEther · 12/10/2021 14:10

@sleepyhoglet

Seasalt have a maternity range now. Most pregnant people aren't over 50!
“Pregnant people” doesn’t go down well on mumsnet
CuteGirlsWatchMeEatEther · 12/10/2021 14:13

Everybody saying it’s ridiculous to rule out a shop completely because you don’t like some of their stuff, are you saying you look in every shop out there? That sounds time consuming. Or do you in actual fact only shop in a few stores?

bluecarry · 12/10/2021 14:17

I'm early 30's and my DM is 60, we both get the odd thing from there. Probably not the same items however, if we wear them differently at least.

KirstenBlest · 12/10/2021 14:59

@CuteGirlsWatchMeEatEther, if I am after something specific, I'll go the shops that are likely to sell it. I usually just nip into favourite shops.

If I have plenty of time, I'll go round most of them. It depends where I am, the local town centre is fairly compact.

KimikosNightmare · 12/10/2021 15:27

I only wear dresses. I've not shopped in Sea Salt but online they seem to do more or less the same as White Stuff, Fat Face and Joules (none of which I buy either). They're all ok in an ordinary sort of way.

I'd assume the target audience is anyone over 30 to whenever.

KirstenBlest · 12/10/2021 16:04

The quality of SeaSalt is better than the others you mentioned @KimikosNightmare, but the others are fine

ohtwatbollocks · 12/10/2021 16:05

I'm not sure what age it's aimed at but I'm 29 and I wouldn't touch anything in there.

Maireas · 12/10/2021 16:19

@Craftycorvid, interesting generalisations there. Toast is my favourite shop, I wear a lot of their clothes. It's news to me that I'm projecting the image of a 1920s austere novelist. Confused
