What age is Seasalt aimed at?

554 replies

ChampagneWorries · 08/10/2021 21:11

I went shopping for a coat today and the lady is my local boutique was trying to convince me that most school mums wear Seasalt coats and Seasalt is great for my needs (warm, stylish, waterproof).

She seemed abit put out when I mentioned I felt Seasalt were too old for me and I felt their target market is late 40s plus.

What age would you say Seasalt is aimed at?

@SirChenjins

Dire in your opinion - not in mine. Obvs.

If posters just said they didn’t like it (as in, The Kooples is overpriced shite, really isn’t edgy, and I don’t like it) then fine, but when you’re throwing casual ageism around then other posters are going to (quite rightly) take you to task - which might run to 17 pages or even longer, there’s no word limit.

It always tickles me when posters start threads about the horrible dress they've seen in M&S...there was a particular one a couple of years ago, and yes, it was foul. The EXACT SAME DRESS but in a different colour had everyone billing and cooing on the Hush thread. Just adds to my absolute convinction that a) certain brands have product placers n MN b) certain brands have posters signed up to start threads slagging other brands off c) MN is a bit full of ignorant ageist twats.

@Classica

I wish people wouldn't take mild criticism of a brand as an attack on those who wear the brand. So dramatic.
They aren't. They're taking offence at offensive comments about older women, some of which have thankfully been deleted.
RampantIvy · 11/10/2021 13:07

@Classica people aren't taking offence at other people's taste. If someone said "I don't like Seasalt because their colours are dull or the style doesn't suit me" then that is fine.

But to say "I don't like Seasalt because my 80 year old granny wears it" is not OK.

beigebrownblue · 11/10/2021 13:13

I don't like the colour of the coat in the picture.
But have a seasalt coat myself and it is brilliant.

It is difficult to find a coat that weathers all storms and all weathers and still looks presentable.

I'm also glad to be able to rely on it for hill walking etc.

My approach is, well, yes this is my 'functional' coat (and school runs) I'll have it for years probably - so when I go out on the town (not very often sadly) or at Christmas etc then I'll have an enitrely different kind of coat to wear...

Thought everyone did that? Regardless of age.

Have to say I'm sure the Sea salt dresses especially the velvet ones can be dressed up or down.

Can't they?

UniBallEye · 11/10/2021 13:14

Yes and it's also ok to say 'I don't like Lucy and Yak because the shape and style don't suit me and I'm not interested in that look'

It's not so ok to say 'Lucy and Yak are for 'cutsey, ditzy, pixie, dream girls and not a look for a grown up woman'..

BobbiPinsOn · 11/10/2021 13:15

30+

daytripper28 · 11/10/2021 13:17

Haven't read the whole thread. But LOVE my long Seasalt coat that I've had for 3 years(?) It is absolutely warm and totally waterproof.

I think it looks nice and so does my dog - and we rarely see anyone else who wants to pass comment.

I'm ancient at the grand old age of 58 - but can still walk and everything....Grin Grin

Sooverthemill · 11/10/2021 13:21

@JMAngel1

How on earth is this thread 17 pages???😂 What is there to say about it other than it is dire?
I think most of us are commenting on the ageism / sexism inherent in the comments. All retailer are dire/ amazing to one person or another. Suggesting that a woman over/ under a certain age can't wear something or a brand is shocking to me in 2021
Classica · 11/10/2021 13:21

Personally I think it's absolutely fine. Like I'm fine with people saying that leopard print (something I love) is the tackiest thing ever. It's not a value judgement on me.
Classica · 11/10/2021 13:23

Ageism is offensive of course, but taking offence at someone saying a certain brand is a 'pixie dream girl' brand is so overly sensitive.

CSJobseeker · 11/10/2021 13:26

I actually said "Not the look I aim for as an adult woman". I made no reference to what other women wear.

Lucy & Yak explicitly market themselves as cute / quirky etc. Have a look at their website - their target customer is obviously someone who likes that look.

Similarly, other brands might market themselves as 'practical comfort' or 'high fashion'. Are we meant to pretend that brands don't have a 'type'?

Classica · 11/10/2021 13:27

I did see a thread recently where someone said that anyone who had a bra strap showing looked like a 'cheap whore'. Obviously that person needs therapy to deal with their internalised misogyny. But a light-hearted reference to manic pixie dream girl aesthetics, not so much.

CSJobseeker · 11/10/2021 13:28

But to say "I don't like Seasalt because my 80 year old granny wears it" is not OK.

I agree with this.

garlicandsapphires · 11/10/2021 13:30

I’m surprised at the vitriol for Seasalt on here! I think it can be grumpy but I still love it. I stick to the plain things though. I have some lovely dresses that I wear loads.

CSJobseeker · 11/10/2021 13:30

"Pixie dream girl" is a look/style/tribe, just as much as "goth" is. You can be a pixie dream girl (or a goth for that matter) at any age, but it's also absolutely fine for other people to say, "That's not the look I aim for".

CSJobseeker · 11/10/2021 13:32

In theory I should like Seasalt. I'm probably their target market; I like practical clothes, natural fibres etc. But whenever I look on their website, I can't see anything I like. I think it's the colours/prints etc. they choose... just not really my style.
RampantIvy · 11/10/2021 13:43

And that is a fair criticism @CSJobseeker.

garlicandsapphires · 11/10/2021 13:44

Frumpy not grumpy!

WhoppingBigBackside · 11/10/2021 13:48

I'd never heard of pixie dream girl before but a search on 'pixie dream girl outfits' gave results that I recognise.

And there I was thinking I had nailed the scandi architect look but in reality I am more pippi longstocking's nan.

CSJobseeker · 11/10/2021 13:50

In my head I look Scandi wearing thick woollen knits. In reality it's probably more like Vicar of Dibley sensible jumpers.

SirChenjins · 11/10/2021 14:05

@CSJobseeker

This thread is throwing up brands I've never looked at before, so it's widening my horizons at least!

I am not a fashionista though. My main priorities are natural fibres, quality/sustainability, colours that suit me, and classic practical pieces that I'll be able to wear for at least a decade. I spend most of my time outside cities, so things that I can wear with boots in the mud are always a plus!

I don't buy clothes often, but my recent purchases have been from ERIBÉ, Finisterre, Two Thirds, Celtic & Co & Levis.

I’ve just bought a sweater from ERIBÉ which I absolutely love. In my head I look like like I’m wafting round a blonde wood and slate Alpine chalet beside a frozen lake. I have chosen to ignore the reality.
CSJobseeker · 11/10/2021 14:06

My Eribe sweater is one of my most prized possessions. It's utterly beautiful.

SirChenjins · 11/10/2021 14:11

Is it one of the Fairisle ones? I have absolutely fallen in love with mine - it’s gorgeous (well I love it) Smile

CSJobseeker · 11/10/2021 14:12

Yes, in 'Lugano'

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/10/2021 14:15

@Classica

I genuinely could not give a fuck if someone says they hate a particular brand that I love or a look that I love.
It's because some people are saying they wouldn't wear something because the model had grey hair and it's for old women which is appalling.

Imagine seeing a friend in a jacket that looks great on them and you ask where it's from as you want one too and the friend says it's Seasalt and you recoil in horror and say you can't wear that as it's for OLD women with GREY hair!!

Wtf ,how ridiculous is that?Confused
